|
| | | HOUSTON: GUARDS: The postseason was a different story for JAMES HARDEN, but he was a dominant all-around performer during the past two regular seasons. He'll do the bulk of the ball-handling for the up-tempo Rockets . . . After looking for an upgrade during the offseason, it's back to PATRICK BEVERLEY at the point. He's the No. 4 or 5 option on offense, but his defense will keep him on the floor . . . There's little backcourt depth, so rookie NICK JOHNSON has a shot at the rotation. He's NBA-ready as a defender, but his offensive game is shaky . . . ISH SMITH will push for that back-up point guard job . . . ISAIAH CANAAN will have to shoot the lights out early to get a look in the rotation . . . FRANCISCO GARCIA is still here as a 3-and-D option. FORWARDS: TREVOR ARIZA slides into Chandler Parsons' old role, providing defense and three-point shooting. He has a chance for a career-best output offensively . . . The Rockets know they need an upgrade over TERRENCE JONES, but they struck out during the offseason. He's a hustle guy, but he's too much of a defensive liability at the 4-spot . . . After disappearing last season, DONATAS MOTIEJUNAS has a chance to play himself into a thin frontcourt rotation. He's a potential 7-foot floor spacer . . . JEFF ADRIEN will be a "little things" guy in the second unit . . . They wanted to leave CLINT CAPELA overseas, but he'll be in Houston. He might be the future at the 4-spot, but he's years away . . . KOSTAS PAPANIKOLAOU has potential as a versatile bench option. CENTERS: DWIGHT HOWARD looked healthy again and was, at times, dominant. His game still has obvious flaws, namely free-throw shooting and an inability to step away from the basket, but there's no reason he can't flirt with 20-10 nightly while being among the league leaders in blocks . . . Ex-Rocket JOEY DORSEY returns after a strong stint in Spain. He'll bring some muscle (and six fouls) behind Howard. | | DENVER: GUARDS: TY LAWSON is the facilitator in Denver's up-tempo offense. Durability is a concern, as he missed 15-plus games for the third time in five career seasons during the 2013-14 campaign . . . ARRON AFFLALO is what the Nuggets need. He'll be a No. 3 scorer and, more importantly, gives them a big defensive upgrade . . . Denver can't afford to play RANDY FOYE so many minutes. He's a serviceable reserve, but they won't win games if he's playing 30-plus minutes . . . The Afflalo acquisition blocks him, but GARY HARRIS is tough-nosed on defense and a solid deep threat . . . NATE ROBINSON might unseat Foye for the sixth-man role by midseason, but first he'll have to work his way back from a torn ACL . . . Combo guard ERICK GREEN will pick up garbage-time minutes. FORWARDS: KENNETH FARIED is one of the few bright spots in Denver. He can't generate his own offense, but he's effective filling lanes and picking up garbage points in this system . . . If he's ever 100 percent healthy again, DANILO GALLINARI will be the go-to scorer on this team. But he's a question mark after missing all of last season with a torn ACL . . . WILSON CHANDLER won't be relied on as heavily this season, but he's going to get major minutes as a floor spacer who can play the 2-guard or either forward spot . . . Stretch-4 DARRELL ARTHUR is a solid rotation guy when he's shooting well, but he was laying bricks last season . . . QUINCY MILLER has intriguing athleticism, but remains a raw project . . . Even if he wasn't coming off a torn ACL, J.J. HICKSON would not make this rotation. CENTERS: TIMOFEY MOZGOV may have grabbed the lead in this center-by-committee group with his strong finish to last season . . . A stress fracture cost JaVALE McGEE his chance to secure a full-time role last season. The tantalizing, but consistently disappointing, big man should make the rotation, but has an uphill battle to earn minutes . . . JUSUF NURKIC is a high-upside project as a 7-footer with a legit NBA offensive skill set. |

*Rockets-Nuggets Preview* =========================
By JORDAN GARRETSON STATS Writer
Houston (18-5) at Denver (10-14), 10:30 p.m. EDT
Though the Houston Rockets were able to count on James Harden to remain among the Western Conference's top teams with Dwight Howard sidelined, they are more than happy to have their center back after a three-week absence.
Howard looks to lead Houston to its second straight win over the injury-ravaged Denver Nuggets on Wednesday night.
The Rockets (18-5) went 8-3 with Howard out due to a strained right knee, averaging a plus-1.8 scoring margin. Harden led the NBA with 29.1 points per game in that span, shooting 46.3 percent after previously recording a 37.2 mark.
Howard was 9 of 11 from the floor for 26 points with 13 rebounds and three blocks in Saturday's 108-96 home win over Denver (10-14). The Rockets are averaging a plus-8.2 scoring margin while going 10-1 with Howard, who is averaging 19.5 points, 11.5 rebounds and 2.4 blocks.
Houston was 6-5 without him in 2013-14 compared to 48-23 with him.
"I didn't know what to expect," Howard said. "I just wanted to come there and give my teammates everything I had. I didn't play a perfect game, but I gave the hardest effort I could for my team."
Harden had 24 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists for his third career triple-double.
Howard's absence may pay off in the long run after it allowed for Donatas Motiejunas' emergence. The third-year forward averaged 14.3 points on 56.2 percent shooting in those 11 games after previously scoring 5.3 per game while shooting 35.8 percent.
Motiejunas remained effective Saturday while sharing the floor with Howard, scoring a career-high 25. Houston matched a season high with 32 second-half points in the paint.
"I think it's important," coach Kevin McHale said of keeping both involved offensively. "Very few teams have two really quality low-post defenders. So we should be able to find ways. Those two are going to have to be able to work together."
Interior defense has been a growing problem for the Nuggets, who are allowing 42.0 points in the paint per game while dropping seven of 10. They had limited teams to an average of 34.9 while winning six of their previous seven.
"We got dominated by their big guys inside," coach Brian Shaw said. "Howard and Motiejunas, we couldn't stop when they threw the ball in the post. They just backed us down and got whatever they wanted."
Denver lost 99-91 to San Antonio on Sunday despite Arron Afflalo's season-high 31 points.
Shaw's rotation is depleted with forwards Kenneth Faried (ankle) and Danilo Gallinari (knee) sitting out, though both are probable. Center JaVale McGee has already missed 10 of the last 11 games with soreness in his surgically repaired left leg and is expected to remain out for a significant time.
"Our guys are pressing," Shaw said. "I know they are tired and banged up. We are short-handed but I don't want to use that as an excuse. We have to find a way to get it done."
Nate Robinson returned against the Spurs after missing four games with a back contusion but was held to two points on 1-for-7 shooting.
The Rockets have lost four straight and nine of 12 in Denver.
