| |  | PHOENIX: GUARDS: This is GORAN DRAGIC's team, and he'll continue to thrive in head coach Jeff Hornacek's up-tempo system . . . ERIC BLEDSOE's contract extension took longer than planned, but both sides are happy it's done. Durability is a concern, but he's an explosive scorer who can defend, and a fringe All-Star when he's healthy . . . They do have a logjam in the backcourt with ISAIAH THOMAS coming in. Thomas would likely become a high-energy sixth man, a role he's better suited for than a starter . . . GERALD GREEN will see solid minutes considering he can play both wing spots. The question is whether the vastly improved three-point shooting was for real . . . It's a developmental season for 20-year-old rookie TYLER ENNIS . . . ARCHIE GOODWIN will need to polish both his point-guard skills and his shooting. FORWARDS: MARKIEFF MORRIS was a highly effective stretch-4 with the second unit last season, and he could be in for a full-time role now that Channing Frye is gone . . . Retained as a free agent, P.J. TUCKER will continue to be a glue guy in the starting five . . . MARCUS MORRIS has fallen behind his twin brother in the rotation. He's more of a 'tweener who doesn't quite fit in that stretch-4 role . . . Rookie T.J. WARREN fits Hornacek's system and should have his way with opposing bench players. He's a below-the-rim, mid-range shooter with limited upside, but crafty enough to pile up points against second-unit talent. He'll miss the first two weeks of the season with a fractured thumb . . . ANTHONY TOLLIVER gives the Suns some depth at the 4-spot, and he fits the system with his long-range shooting. CENTERS: MILES PLUMLEE is the best option in an underwhelming rotation in the middle. He's an energy guy who does little else . . . He lost his rookie season, and ALEX LEN is still in the developmental stage. His upside is much higher than Plumlee's, and he might get minutes because of his screening and defensive mobility. | | CHARLOTTE: GUARDS: LANCE STEPHENSON started chucking and padding stats after missing the All-Star team last season, fueling Indiana's collapse. He's a potentially solid role player, but if he tries to be the alpha for the Hornets, it could be a long season . . . KEMBA WALKER has become a solid playmaker, though he'll lose some touches while playing alongside Stephenson . . . The Hornets seem to be done with GERALD HENDERSON, who will stay in the rotation, but see a reduced role with all the Hornets' offseason acquisitions . . . GARY NEAL can play both guard spots as a high-scoring sixth man . . . P.J. HAIRSTON needs to stay out of trouble off the court if he's to have any chance of becoming a three-point specialist off the bench . . . BRIAN ROBERTS steps in as a No. 3 point guard. FORWARDS: Charlotte reloaded in the frontcourt, but MICHAEL KIDD-GILCHRIST will likely claim a starting job due to his defense. It's probably time to accept that MKG will never have much of an offensive game . . . CODY ZELLER will have every opportunity to grab a starting job early on. Unfortunately, his inability to score in traffic limits his effectiveness . . . MARVIN WILLIAMS will see major minutes at both forward spots. He's a capable defender who has added a three-point shot to his repertoire . . . He's still a teenager, so he may not carve out major minutes this year, but NOAH VONLEH has by far the most upside among their 4's and 5's. He's a potentially elite stretch-4 . . . JEFF TAYLOR's Achilles is close to 100 percent. He has a shot to re-claim a rotation spot. CENTERS: AL JEFFERSON is a flawed player, but he gives Charlotte exactly what the team is looking for: A low-post threat on the offensive end of the court. Like Walker, he'll also suffer a bit with Stephenson coming in, but he's still the focal point of this offense . . . He's not quite a bust because he can defend, but BISMACK BIYOMBO hasn't shown any semblance of an offensive game. |

The Phoenix Suns' recent woes continued with another heartbreaking loss last time out.
The Charlotte Hornets haven't been able to get it together, either.
Looking to avoid a seventh consecutive defeat, Phoenix opens a three-game road trip at last-place Charlotte on Wednesday night.
The Suns (12-14) have experienced several close calls during their skid, including a 121-120 overtime loss to the Clippers on Dec. 8 and Friday's 105-103 defeat to Detroit. Phoenix came up just short again Monday, falling 96-94 to Milwaukee after giving up a wild game-winning 3-pointer as time expired.
Khris Middleton's dagger hit the backboard and hung on the rim before going in as the Suns dropped to 1-5 in their last six against the Eastern Conference. The game featured six lead changes in the final 42 seconds.
"Lucky shot," forward Markieff Morris said after Phoenix fell to 3-7 in games decided by five or fewer points. "We've just got to come together. Once we get one we'll be OK. We're just in a matrix. We have to fight our way out of this."
Morris led all scorers with 25 points while Isaiah Thomas scored 20 off the bench, but the Suns were outscored 50-24 in the paint and 19-6 in transition. Phoenix also committed seven of its season high-tying 23 turnovers in the fourth quarter, when it was outscored 29-22.
The Suns' skid is their longest since a 10-game slide March 20-April 9, 2013.
"We have to value the ball more," coach Jeff Hornacek said. "Some years the breaks don't go your way, and obviously so far this year they haven't. But we have to make our own breaks. ... It's a 48-minute game, you can't have any lulls."
While most struggling teams would surely be looking forward to facing the Hornets (6-18), the Suns lost the first meeting 103-95 on Nov. 14. The Hornets overcame a 28-14 first-quarter deficit, snapping a five-game skid in the series.
Charlotte, however, has since been limited to an average of 92.5 points in losing 13 of 15. The Hornets fell behind 21-0 in Monday's 97-88 loss at Cleveland, their third consecutive defeat.
Charlotte is allowing teams to shoot 46.8 percent for one of the NBA's worst marks, including 48.3 percent over the last seven games.
"That's been a problem for us. (We've made) a lot of mistakes defensively," Kemba Walker said after scoring 24 points. "You can't do that in this league. ... You've got to try to limit your mistakes."
Al Jefferson has been quiet over the last three games, averaging 12.7 points on 40.9 percent shooting. He's averaging 18.8 points, down from last year's mark of 21.8. Jefferson has been limited to 33 points on 14-of-37 shooting over a three-game stretch against Phoenix.
Lance Stephenson has also been a disappointment after signing a three-year, $27 million deal this summer. He's shooting 38.7 percent after a career-best 49.1 percent with Indiana last season, and his name has come up in recent trade rumors.
"I think it has to be hard. Some guys handle it well, and some guys not so well," coach Steve Clifford said after Tuesday's practice. "I think he's more concerned with his shot, and he was in here early again today and he's staying late. ... He needs a couple shots to go in and then I think he can take off."
The Hornets, whose win last month over the Suns is their only one in 11 games versus the Western Conference this season, have not swept the season series since 2009-10.
