| |  | SACRAMENTO: GUARDS: With Isaiah Thomas out, DARREN COLLISON steps in at the point. He looked good backing up Chris Paul in L.A. and will benefit from a wide-open offense. But it's not clear if can he handle full-time minutes after flopping as a starter in Dallas . . . BEN McLEMORE has to get it going early if he's going to keep his starting job. There's raw talent, but McLemore has a reputation for fading into the background, and was wholly unimpressive last season . . . NIK STAUSKAS will push McLemore for minutes immediately. He'll be overmatched defensively at times, but he can shoot it and moves the ball well offensively . . . It seems like RAY McCALLUM will be a solid enough back-up point guard for the next few years . . . RAMON SESSIONS will push Collison for minutes and could eventually unseat him as the Kings' starter. FORWARDS: RUDY GAY is a low-efficiency player who needs the ball in his hands, but head coach Michael Malone seems willing to let him do his thing . . . Power forward is a black hole in Sacramento. JASON THOMPSON might open the season as the Kings' primary 4, though he struggled mightily in his first season under Malone . . . DERRICK WILLIAMS has never shed that 'tweener label. The team will try to milk some second unit productivity out of him . . . REGGIE EVANS will continue to turn flopping into an art form. An obnoxious art form . . . CARL LANDRY is a question mark as he works his way back from a torn meniscus . . . Tell the world OMRI CASSPI is coming home. CENTERS: He made some real strides under Malone last year, and DeMARCUS COUSINS' improved shot selection has finally made him one of the league's better big men. He spends much less time floating on the perimeter hoisting contested 18-footers. | | SAN ANTONIO: GUARDS: TONY PARKER may not be ageless, as he'll sit a handful of games during the regular season. But when the 32-year-old is on the court, he still gets into the lane whenever he wants . . . He can't do anything off the dribble, but DANNY GREEN is one of the league's elite spot-up shooters . . . MANU GINOBILI will need some regular-season maintenance as far as playing time goes, especially coming off a stress fracture in his leg. He's essential for the postseason . . . MARCO BELINELLI will have a significant role off the bench due to his ability to defend, shoot and do some ball-handling . . . It might be a lost regular season for NBA Finals star PATTY MILLS as he works his way back from shoulder surgery. He hopes to make his season debut in mid-January . . . CORY JOSEPH will pick up a few more minutes while Mills is out. FORWARDS: There's plenty of buzz surrounding KAWHI LEONARD after his Finals MVP performance, though it seems unlikely they'll make him the centerpiece of this offense as long as their vets are still going strong . . . Thirty-eight-year-old TIM DUNCAN is still one of the better power forwards in the league. Just like Parker and Ginobili, he'll take the occasional DNP-CD. His rebounding and shot-blocking rates continue to surge. The only real disappointment last season was that his FT shooting slid back towards his sub-70% career mark . . . JEFF AYRES is one of the new anonymous big men at the end of the San Antonio bench. He'll see a handful of starts when Gregg Popovich rests his star players . . . KYLE ANDERSON is too much of a defensive liability to see major minutes as a rookie, but his versatile skill set suggests he could be Boris Diaw's heir apparent . . . MATT BONNER will hoist some threes during the regular season. CENTERS: Popovich rotates his centers depending on the situation. TIAGO SPLITTER, the more traditional 5, will likely take the bulk of the minutes again . . . BORIS DIAW will play when the offense gets stagnant, especially when opponents go small. |

After losing to the Sacramento Kings nearly two weeks ago, the San Antonio Spurs have maintained a winning streak despite the absence of their coach.
They're expected to again be without Gregg Popovich on Friday night in San Antonio as the Kings try for rare consecutive wins in the series, though that could be difficult if Rudy Gay and Darren Collison remain sidelined.
Popovich missed Wednesday's 106-100 home victory over Indiana after undergoing what the team is calling a minor medical procedure. In his place, assistant Ettore Messina became the first European-born coach to run an NBA team in the regular season.
It was fitting that Manu Ginobili, Messina's former player at Bologna in 2001, led the Spurs (10-4) to their fifth straight win with 28 points.
"It was great to see (Messina) out there and trying to take over the team and yell at us and get upset," Ginobili said. "It really got me thinking about 13 years ago."
Kawhi Leonard had 21 points and 13 rebounds, Tony Parker scored 21 and Tim Duncan added 17.
Ginobili, who has worked through various leg injuries over the past few seasons, had shot 6 for 17 and averaged 4.8 points in his previous four games. Duncan joked that a coup d'etat may be in order.
"It's just great to see (Manu) get his legs underneath him; get an opportunity to make some shots," Duncan said. "I think he's going to talk to somebody about not having Pop here anymore and letting coach Messina let him play like that."
The winning streak follows a 94-91 loss in Sacramento (9-6) on Nov. 15, the Spurs' first in 10 games against the Kings. Sacramento hasn't won two in a row in the series since stringing four together during the 2000-01 and 2001-02 seasons. The Spurs have won the last four meetings in San Antonio and 17 of 19.
Ginobili led the Spurs with 21 points in the latest matchup, his average in his last three games against Sacramento. Duncan, though, has had his struggles against the DeMarcus Cousins-led frontcourt with a 42.3 percent shooting mark in the last five matchups.
The Kings had won three straight before losing 102-89 in Houston on Wednesday despite a 29-point, 17-rebound effort from Cousins. They'll try to conclude their trip with a 3-1 record, but doing so likely means correcting their 78-46 turnover disparity of the last five games. The Rockets held a 21-4 advantage over them.
"You can't beat good teams and yourself in the same game, and we did that tonight, which is too bad," coach Michael Malone said.
The Kings have often been able to overcome their league-worst minus-4.1 turnover differential with rebounding. Sacramento's plus-8.2 average is easily the best in basketball, while San Antonio ranks fourth at plus-4.6.
Gay remained out against the Rockets due to an Achilles tendon injury suffered against the Spurs. He played in the three games immediately after but has been sidelined for two since.
The Kings have also been without starting point guard Collison, who has missed two games with a quad contusion.
Gay's absence has allowed for two starts for Omri Casspi, and the small forward has responded with 18.0 points and 60.9 percent shooting.
Ramon Sessions has filled in as the starting point guard, though he's shot 33.3 percent in those contests. He had five turnovers and three assists against the Rockets.
