KEY GAME INFORMATION
INDIANA: GUARDS: Indy couldn't find an upgrade on GEORGE HILL this offseason, and losing Lance Stephenson and Paul George means Hill will have to play a more traditional ball-handling role this year . . . RODNEY STUCKEY's combo-guard skills probably make him the best fit alongside Hill. Whether he's up to the task defensively will decide whether he's a full-time player or a time-share guy . . . C.J. MILES will help fill the need for perimeter shooting, especially with Paul George out . . . They have a solid veteran back-up in C.J. WATSON. He's the closest thing to a pure point guard on this roster, and is a bigger need for the second unit than the starting five. FORWARDS: PAUL GEORGE was poised for an MVP run, but he'll now miss the season after a compound leg fracture during Team USA practice. He's no guarantee to ever return at full strength . . . DAVID WEST's floor-spacing, mid-range game is key in this system . . . He was a dud in his first season with the Pacers, but Indy might have no choice but to plug LUIS SCOLA into their thin frontcourt rotation . . . DAMJAN RUDEZ is a stretch-4 with three-point range. He could push Scola for a rotation spot . . . The Pacers are hoping SOLOMON HILL is ready to be a second-unit glue guy . . . LAVOY ALLEN brings size and opposable thumbs . . . They seemingly have little use for CHRIS COPELAND after signing Rudez. CENTERS: As strange as it seems, ROY HIBBERT might benefit most from the departure of Lance Stephenson. The big man was referring to Stephenson when he talked about selfish play. Of course, Hibbert's atrocious performance late last season is a problem in and of itself . . . IAN MAHINMI has size and six fouls to give.
DALLAS: GUARDS: MONTA ELLIS will be the Mavs' lead guard again, taking on even more ball-handling responsibilities with their black hole at point guard. In his first season in Dallas, he proved to be the perfect fit running pick-and-rolls in head coach Rick Carlisle's system . . . The Mavericks are in trouble if they have to rely on RAYMOND FELTON, a fringe rotation-caliber player even in his brief 'prime,' but he might end up the starter by default . . . JAMEER NELSON's poor defense makes him difficult to pair with Ellis, but offensively he's the best option . . . DEVIN HARRIS is a superior defender and a dangerous offensive player, but the questions are durability and how well he fits alongside Ellis . . . GAL MEKEL struggled offensively, but his defense is going to earn him minutes at both guard spots. He's a borderline rotation guy. FORWARDS: DIRK NOWITZKI came back on a discounted deal, but at age 36 he still has plenty left in the tank. He's a legit All-Star-caliber player . . . Dallas pried CHANDLER PARSONS from Houston, giving the team someone to run the floor with Ellis and shoot some corner threes in the half-court set. He figures to have a slightly smaller role than he did with the Rockets though . . . Last season in Utah, RICHARD JEFFERSON reestablished himself as a rotation player by adding a consistent three-point shot . . . AL-FAROUQ AMINU gives the Mavs an energy guy who can play both forward spots . . . JAE CROWDER will have to fight to keep his spot in the rotation. He has yet to put it together offensively and he needs to add a three-point shot . . . GREG SMITH won't make a significant contribution unless his knee proves healthy. CENTERS: Durability is an underlying issue, but the Mavs were thrilled to bring TYSON CHANDLER back into the fold. He'll be much happier in Carlisle's defensive system than he was in Mike Woodson's switch-everything approach . . . BRANDAN WRIGHT will play fewer minutes behind Chandler as an extra rim protector and rebounder.

*Pacers-Mavericks Preview* ==========================

By JORDAN GARRETSON STATS Writer

Indiana (5-8) at Dallas (10-4), 8:30 p.m. EDT

The Dallas Mavericks' dominant offensive run finally came to an end along with their longest winning streak in more than two years.

Facing the increasingly undermanned Indiana Pacers might help them bounce back quickly.

Dallas looks for a 13th win in 16 home meetings Monday night.

The Mavericks (10-4) had won six in a row prior to Saturday's 95-92 loss at Houston. They had averaged 118.7 points on 51.6 percent shooting - including a 39.2 percent mark from 3-point range - during the winning streak, but recorded their second-lowest field-goal percentage of the season at 39.8.

Dallas, which fell to 0-4 when scoring fewer than 105 points, was 6 of 35 from beyond the arc. It marked their second-fewest made 3-pointers on at least 30 attempts, only trailing a 5-for-30 performance in a win over Washington on Dec. 21, 2008. The Mavericks tied a franchise record a night earlier with 18 3-pointers made in a 140-106 win over the Lakers.

Dirk Nowitzki, who is shooting 51.6 percent, was 4 for 18 against the Rockets while Monta Ellis was 7 for 21. Both missed 3-pointers in the final seconds that could have forced overtime. Nowitzki and Chandler Parsons were a combined 0 for 13 from 3-point range

"We didn't have a good shooting night, which is going to happen," coach Rick Carlisle told the team's official website. "And on those nights your defense has got to hold you in there. You know, clearly, from start to finish, the defense wasn't good enough."

Despite Carlisle's disappointment, Houston only shot 36.6 percent - the second lowest allowed by Dallas this season.

Nowitzki is 5 of 25 from 3-point range in his last 11 meetings with Indiana, though averaged 23.1 points.

The Mavericks won both meetings last season to sweep the series for the first time since 2009-10.

The Pacers (5-8) had also been playing well with wins in four of five before suffering their worst defeat this season in Saturday's 106-83 home loss to Phoenix. They shot a season-low 36.9 percent, were outscored 51-35 in the second half and gave up a season-high 12 3-pointers.

Indiana, which is averaging just 90.9 points with an offense challenged by the losses of Paul George, David West and George Hill, may have suffered another setback Saturday. Roy Hibbert left in the first quarter due to a sprained left ankle, leaving Indiana without four anticipated starters.

Ian Mahinmi did play well in an increased role in Hibbert's absence, recording 12 points and 10 rebounds in 26 minutes after previously averaging 16.5 minutes.

The Pacers could also be without Rodney Stuckey, who is listed as day to day with a sprained right wrist. He's averaging 10.0 points and scored a team-high 14 against the Suns.

"I think we're here mentally. We're in every game," said Solomon Hill, who is averaging 12.2 points in 34.2 minutes per game - 26.1 more than he averaged as a rookie. "We still believe in each other."

Dallas is 6-1 at home and 4-1 overall against Eastern Conference opponents with an average scoring margin of plus-15.8 in those games.
