|
| | | LA CLIPPERS: GUARDS: Head coach Doc Rivers pretty much hands the offense over to CHRIS PAUL, who is very much in his prime. He has a chance to lead the NBA in assists and steals again . . . He was banged up during the regular season, but J.J. REDICK fit nicely next to Paul when healthy . . . JAMAL CRAWFORD will reprise his sixth-man role. He can still fill it up, though he'll lose a bit of playing time if Redick stays healthy . . . JORDAN FARMAR is still hanging around L.A., this time to back up Paul. He'll run point for the second unit . . . C.J. WILCOX is arguably the best shooter in the rookie class, but he's not guaranteed to grab a rotation spot. FORWARDS: He still has flaws in his game, but BLAKE GRIFFIN continues to evolve into a more complete player. His improved shooting, both mid-range and at the line, is a testament to that . . . The Clippers failed to land an upgrade at small forward, so MATT BARNES might be the starter by default again. He's a good glue guy, though his streaky shooting is a frustration . . . The Clippers retained GLEN DAVIS in free agency. "Big Baby" can do some damage against opposing second units during the regular season. CENTERS: Rivers made DeANDRE JORDAN into a full-time player last season. He's a rim protector and rebounder who has made some strides defending in space, but there's a reason the Clippers spent on another big man . . . SPENCER HAWES gives them a different look at the 5-spot, and he can play alongside Jordan as a floor-spacer as well. | | CHARLOTTE: GUARDS: LANCE STEPHENSON started chucking and padding stats after missing the All-Star team last season, fueling Indiana's collapse. He's a potentially solid role player, but if he tries to be the alpha for the Hornets, it could be a long season . . . KEMBA WALKER has become a solid playmaker, though he'll lose some touches while playing alongside Stephenson . . . The Hornets seem to be done with GERALD HENDERSON, who will stay in the rotation, but see a reduced role with all the Hornets' offseason acquisitions . . . GARY NEAL can play both guard spots as a high-scoring sixth man . . . P.J. HAIRSTON needs to stay out of trouble off the court if he's to have any chance of becoming a three-point specialist off the bench . . . BRIAN ROBERTS steps in as a No. 3 point guard. FORWARDS: Charlotte reloaded in the frontcourt, but MICHAEL KIDD-GILCHRIST will likely claim a starting job due to his defense. It's probably time to accept that MKG will never have much of an offensive game . . . CODY ZELLER will have every opportunity to grab a starting job early on. Unfortunately, his inability to score in traffic limits his effectiveness . . . MARVIN WILLIAMS will see major minutes at both forward spots. He's a capable defender who has added a three-point shot to his repertoire . . . He's still a teenager, so he may not carve out major minutes this year, but NOAH VONLEH has by far the most upside among their 4's and 5's. He's a potentially elite stretch-4 . . . JEFF TAYLOR's Achilles is close to 100 percent. He has a shot to re-claim a rotation spot. CENTERS: AL JEFFERSON is a flawed player, but he gives Charlotte exactly what the team is looking for: A low-post threat on the offensive end of the court. Like Walker, he'll also suffer a bit with Stephenson coming in, but he's still the focal point of this offense . . . He's not quite a bust because he can defend, but BISMACK BIYOMBO hasn't shown any semblance of an offensive game. |

*Clippers-Hornets Preview* ==========================
Los Angeles (7-4) at Charlotte (4-9), 7:00 p.m. EDT
Though Blake Griffin just turned in his worst scoring effort of the season, there is good reason to believe he will bounce back.
Griffin averages more points in the second half of back-to-back games than any player and will try to help the visiting Los Angeles Clippers hand the Charlotte Hornets a sixth straight defeat Monday night.
The Clippers (7-5) won the first two contests on a seven-game trip before falling 107-91 to Memphis on Sunday. Griffin finished with a season-low 12 points on 5-of-17 shooting for his worst effort from the field, going 2 for 11 over the final three quarters.
The power forward is averaging 32.0 points on 62.9 percent shooting on the second half of back-to-backs, helping Los Angeles go 3-0 in those contests.
Chris Paul is averaging 17.0 points and a league-best 11.3 assists in second halves of back-to-backs. He is looking for the Clippers to start with greater urgency after they fell behind by 13 at halftime Sunday.
"We really have to come out executing and aggressive and hit first," said Paul, who led the Clippers with 22 points, five assists and four steals. "We really have to do a better job of doing it consistently."
Urgency only begins to describe the predicament Charlotte (4-10) finds itself in. The Hornets are on the verge of their first six-game slide since a 10-game streak Feb. 20-March 9, 2013.
"The stretch of games we've played has definitely taken their toll on our confidence," coach Steve Clifford said.
The Hornets rallied from a nine-point halftime deficit Sunday to go ahead only to fall 94-93 at Miami. Al Jefferson posted his second straight double-double with 22 points and 12 rebounds and Lance Stephenson and Kemba Walker combined for 33 points.
"When things are going against us, it's the body language, heads are down, there's doubt and we're a better team than that," Clifford said. "I think you go through stretches like that sometimes in this league, unfortunately for us it's early."
Charlotte remains without starting forward Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, who will miss his seventh straight game with a stress reaction in his right foot.
Paul has amassed 56 points and 28 assists in winning his last three games in his home state of North Carolina. Los Angeles has taken six of the last seven meetings with Charlotte, though it lost the last one 95-91 on Jan. 22.
One problem for the Clippers is their minus-6.0 rebound margin that only ranks above lowly Philadelphia. They were outrebounded 52-32 by the Grizzlies, with DeAndre Jordan limited to a season-low three as he picked up four fouls in 20 minutes.
Jordan is among the league leaders with 11.4 rebounds per game for the Clippers, who rank last in the NBA with 8.3 second-chance points per game.
Paul entered Sunday leading the NBA with 81.5 passes per game, with Walker third at 72.3.
The Hornets have lost six of seven to Western Conference opponents. The Clippers have won 18 of their last 22 versus the East.
