|
| | | PHOENIX: GUARDS: This is GORAN DRAGIC's team, and he'll continue to thrive in head coach Jeff Hornacek's up-tempo system . . . ERIC BLEDSOE's contract extension took longer than planned, but both sides are happy it's done. Durability is a concern, but he's an explosive scorer who can defend, and a fringe All-Star when he's healthy . . . They do have a logjam in the backcourt with ISAIAH THOMAS coming in. Thomas would likely become a high-energy sixth man, a role he's better suited for than a starter . . . GERALD GREEN will see solid minutes considering he can play both wing spots. The question is whether the vastly improved three-point shooting was for real . . . It's a developmental season for 20-year-old rookie TYLER ENNIS . . . ARCHIE GOODWIN will need to polish both his point-guard skills and his shooting. FORWARDS: MARKIEFF MORRIS was a highly effective stretch-4 with the second unit last season, and he could be in for a full-time role now that Channing Frye is gone . . . Retained as a free agent, P.J. TUCKER will continue to be a glue guy in the starting five . . . MARCUS MORRIS has fallen behind his twin brother in the rotation. He's more of a 'tweener who doesn't quite fit in that stretch-4 role . . . Rookie T.J. WARREN fits Hornacek's system and should have his way with opposing bench players. He's a below-the-rim, mid-range shooter with limited upside, but crafty enough to pile up points against second-unit talent. He'll miss the first two weeks of the season with a fractured thumb . . . ANTHONY TOLLIVER gives the Suns some depth at the 4-spot, and he fits the system with his long-range shooting. CENTERS: MILES PLUMLEE is the best option in an underwhelming rotation in the middle. He's an energy guy who does little else . . . He lost his rookie season, and ALEX LEN is still in the developmental stage. His upside is much higher than Plumlee's, and he might get minutes because of his screening and defensive mobility. | | PHILADELPHIA: GUARDS: MICHAEL CARTER-WILLIAMS wasn't the most legit Rookie of the Year, but he had his moments. He should be a little more efficient in his second season, and Philly certainly doesn't have a better alternative at the point. A shoulder injury will likely keep him sidelined for the first three weeks of the upcoming season . . . TONY WROTEN makes some highlight-reel plays and will likely start at the 2. He's too erratic to be in the rotation for a playoff team . . . As for the rest of the backcourt, ELLIOT WILLIAMS is looking to revive his career, and he's no worse than James Anderson and Hollis Thompson, who were starting for this team last season . . . Injuries have all but ended JASON RICHARDSON's career. He's on the final year of his deal, and might not play in 2014-15 after suffering a stress fracture to his right foot in late October . . . ALEXEY SHVED could play some quality minutes at both guard spots for this team. FORWARDS: The 2014 draft was deep, allowing Philly to land a first-round value in second-rounder K.J. McDANIELS. He's certainly better than anyone the Sixers trotted out at the 3-spot last season . . . HOLLIS THOMPSON could keep a starting job warm again . . . Another second-rounder, JERAMI GRANT, could play his way into the rotation. He's talented, but he's also something of a 'tweener, and like most Syracuse guys sitting in a 2-3 zone, Grant never learned how to e-on-one defense . . . ARNETT MOULTRIE has been something of a problem child in Philly, but he's good enough to make this rotation if he turns it around effort-wise . . . LUC RICHARD MBAH a MOUTE is here as a mentor for Joel Embiid. CENTERS: NERLENS NOEL is ready to make his debut. His collegiate rates suggest he'll rebound and block shots. The question marks are durability, functional strength and offensive game. He'll get to learn on the fly . . . JOEL EMBIID's foot problems will keep him out until at least midseason, and the Sixers will certainly play it safe with him. On raw talent, he's a future star. The questions are durability, and whether he can co-exist with Noel. |

*Suns-76ers Preview* ====================
By JUSTIN EINHORN STATS Senior Editor
Phoenix (7-5) at Philadelphia (0-11), 7:00 p.m. EDT
Eric Bledsoe recently said his college team could beat the Philadelphia 76ers. Whether facing the player who provided that bulletin board material can help push them over the winless hump will be settled Friday night.
Far from pushovers lately despite remaining the league's worst team by a wide margin, the 76ers can make Bledsoe eat his words as his Phoenix Suns continue a road trip on which they've had trouble putting away supposedly inferior teams.
Bledsoe, the starting point guard for Kentucky as a freshman in 2009-10 before going pro, said Wednesday that the currently top-ranked Wildcats would beat Philadelphia in a seven-game series. A day earlier, they beat fifth-ranked Kansas by 32.
"I would definitely take Kentucky. I think Philly would maybe probably get one game," Bledsoe said in a national radio interview.
76ers leading scorer Tony Wroten reportedly called Bledsoe's comments "insulting," though his team would fall to 0-11 that night with a 101-90 home loss to Boston. Every other team in the league has at least three wins.
Philadelphia hasn't gone this long without a win at the start since opening a franchise-worst 0-15 in 1972-73 - a team that finished with an NBA-record 73 losses.
"We're still together, we're a young group of guys that have each others' back no matter what, no matter what our record is," former Kentucky forward Nerlens Noel said.
The Sixers certainly aren't getting blown out every night, especially at home. They were within five midway through the fourth quarter Wednesday, five days after losing by one in Houston, and their previous two home losses were by a combined five points.
Poor shooting continues to plague coach Brett Brown's team, which is hitting league worsts of 40.2 percent from the field and 64.3 percent at the free throw line.
"I've got no complaints with what we do," Brown said. "They bang out good days. It's just, they're not getting rewarded in the win column. That's the judgment most people look at, which is fair. It's pro sports."
While Philadelphia averages an NBA-low 88.6 points, Phoenix (7-5) is toward the top at 103.8 but is often vulnerable defensively with an average of 104.2 points allowed.
However, a good defensive effort Wednesday saved the Suns, who allowed a season-low field-goal percentage of 37.9 in an 88-86 win at Detroit.
"It was big for us. It was ugly," said Bledsoe, who had 18 points. "I thought we did a great job of staying with it and getting the win. Every game is not going to be the same."
The Suns almost blew an eight-point lead in the final two minutes against the 3-9 Pistons. Two nights earlier, they nearly wasted a 14-point second-half advantage in a 118-114 road win over 4-6 Boston.
"We've got to have a mentality that when we see we can kind of break away with a lead, we've got to put our foot down," swingman Gerald Green said. "I think sometimes we have a tendency of kind of letting loose a little bit and I think we just need to go full throttle."
Phoenix swept last season's two meetings, though the 76ers were within single digits midway through the fourth quarter of both.
While the Suns' Goran Dragic averaged 22.5 points in those matchups, Philadelphia's Michael Carter-Williams averaged 24.5 along with 8.5 assists.
Carter-Williams made his first start in four games Wednesday since his return from shoulder surgery but shot 4 for 13. Noel got his first start in two weeks and had 10 points with eight rebounds.
