KEY GAME INFORMATION
BOSTON: GUARDS: RAJON RONDO's name is etched on the trading block. Regardless of where he lands, his injured knee should be 100 percent healthy . . . With an improved three-point shot, AVERY BRADLEY has become a complete player. His defense guarantees minutes regardless . . . MARCUS SMART seems to be waiting in the wings for a Rondo trade. In the meantime, he'll back up both guard spots. Just like in college, he'll be brilliant at times, but inconsistent . . . Local product PHIL PRESSEY will stick around as a No. 3 point guard . . . EVAN TURNER was a disaster in Indy. He'll have a tough time making this rotation . . . MARCUS THORNTON was acquired as a trade throw-in. The Celtics don't have big plans for the remorseless gunner. FORWARDS: He's isn't a legitimate No. 1 option, but JEFF GREEN will be the go-to guy again. He hasn't been able to handle the extra defensive attention, becoming increasingly inefficient . . . He has plenty of limitations on both ends of the court, but JARED SULLINGER is a crafty scorer. He'll get close to starter minutes as the Celtics search for offense . . . BRANDON BASS will see time at the 4 and the 5. He's made a pledge to improve offensively, but more likely he'll be a defensive presence and a screen-setter . . . JAMES YOUNG missed most of the summer healing a neck injury. He's going to do some damage running the floor, but he doesn't have the skills for the half-court game in the NBA . . . GERALD WALLACE is playing out the string. CENTERS: KELLY OLYNYK has the most upside in this frontcourt. His rare mobility and skill set for a 7-footer made a difference last year. It's just a question of whether he can hold up defensively down low . . . TYLER ZELLER gives them another solid 7-footer who opposing defenses have to account for. He'll fit well in head coach Brad Stevens' system . . . JOEL ANTHONY isn't going to get off the bench.
MEMPHIS: GUARDS: So much for head coach David Joerger picking up the tempo. MIKE CONLEY has become a much better half-court player, a requirement on this team . . . COURTNEY LEE will likely be the offensive side of their 2-guard platoon, as he was late last season . . . He lost some minutes late last season, but there's still a part-time role for TONY ALLEN . . . VINCE CARTER will take over Mike Miller's old role, a floor spacer at both wing spots . . . The Grizzlies blocked NICK CALATHES' move back to Europe to keep him around for point guard depth. He is suspended for the first 13 games of the season . . . JORDAN ADAMS comes from UCLA with a strong statistical profile. He might not break into the rotation as a rookie, though . . . BENO UDRIH bought himself another season with strong postseason play. FORWARDS: ZACH RANDOLPH remains the go-to scorer in Memphis. And he's playing for what might be his last big NBA payday . . . TAYSHAUN PRINCE has faded fast, and his expiring contract might be his greatest asset right now . . . QUINCY PONDEXTER returns after missing most of last season with a stress fracture in his foot. He'll have to battle his way back into the rotation after the acquisition of Vince Carter . . . Second-rounder JARNELL STOKES has a football player's build and is quick around the basket, but he could be looking at a season spent mostly in the D-League . . . JON LEUER is still doing Jon Leuer things, shooting well from long range and grabbing occasional rebounds. CENTERS: MARC GASOL will earn a max contract if he keeps playing at this level. Along with very good defense, he's become a valuable facilitator for this team on the offensive end of the court . . . KOSTA KOUFOS is one of the league's better back-up centers. He fits well in the Grizzlies' slow-tempo system.

*Celtics-Grizzlies Preview* ===========================

By JOHN KOSIK STATS Editor

Boston (4-6) at Memphis (10-2), 8:00 p.m. EDT

Memphis is trying to establish itself as one of the teams to beat in the Western Conference. With the first difficult portion of their schedule right around the corner, the Grizzlies could use a warmup against one of the struggling teams in the East.

That's not to say they're looking past the Boston Celtics, who visit FedEx Forum on Friday night seeking their first back-to-back victories.

The Grizzlies (10-2) hold the NBA's best record despite a 96-92 loss at Toronto on Wednesday night, a game which offered further evidence of the disparity in the team's play depending on which conference their opponent calls home.

Memphis is allowing 91.8 points per game, but has turned up the offense against the West with an average of 104.0 to go 7-0 in those contests. It's been quite different against East teams, which have held the Grizzlies to 89.4 in five games.

The loss to the Raptors, however, may have had more to do with Memphis dressing only 10 players because of a stomach virus that ruled out five others. Guards Courtney Lee and Beno Udrih, forwards Tony Allen and Jon Leuer, and center Kosta Koufos were sidelined.

All five spent time at a Toronto hospital Wednesday to treat dehydration. They stayed at the hotel to remain away from teammates and were later sent home on a special charter.

Guard Mike Conley called it one of the strangest situations he's faced in the NBA.

"It's up there on the list," said Conley, who had 19 points, 10 rebounds and five assists against the Raptors. "You should have seen us at shootaround. We had like six guys. We had coaches in all the plays. It was crazy."

The team announced Thursday that forward Jarnell Stokes and swingman Quincy Pondexter have also fallen ill, leaving the status of all seven questionable against Boston.

Marc Gasol and Zach Randolph remain healthy and put up their typically solid numbers to keep the Toronto game close. Gasol had 22 points and 12 rebounds while Randolph added 18 points and 18 boards, including eight offensive.

"It was a challenge for us," Randolph said. "We still played good. That's why this game hurts so bad. We feel we should have won."

The Grizzlies held a 75-69 lead before Toronto outscored them 27-17 in the fourth quarter. Memphis, which also lost at Milwaukee on Nov. 8, has been beaten by a total of five points this season.

In spite of the defeats, they are 24-11 against the East since the start of last season - the fifth-best mark among West teams in that span.

Returning to the win column against the Celtics (4-6) may be crucial for the Grizzlies, who follow this contest with an eight-game stretch that features matchups against the Los Angeles Clippers, Portland, Houston, San Antonio, Miami and Dallas.

A victory Friday might be easier if Gasol can finally break out against the Celtics, against whom he has averaged 10.0 points - his lowest mark against any team.

Boston lit it up on offense over its last three with an average of 112.0 points, but went 1-2. The Celtics, however, ended a three-game skid with Wednesday's 101-90 victory over Philadelphia.

Brandon Bass scored 23 and Jared Sullinger 22 as Boston dropped the 76ers to 0-11.

"The best part about tonight is the way we played when things got stressful," said coach Brad Stevens, whose team was tied at 46 with Philadelphia at halftime.

The Grizzlies swept both games against Boston in each of the last two seasons and had a strong defensive effort in the last meeting in Memphis, winning 95-88 on Nov. 4, 2013.
