KEY GAME INFORMATION
BROOKLYN: GUARDS: DERON WILLIAMS will surely take on more of a distributor role this year, but he's still this team's best option from three-point range, as well . . . JOE JOHNSON started to break down last season, so along with fewer shots (with the upgrade to the rest of the roster), he figures to play fewer regular-season minutes as well . . . JASON TERRY is clearly in the decline phase of his career, but is still the top scoring option among Brooklyn's second unit . . . ALAN ANDERSON gives them another shooter off the bench . . . SHAUN LIVINGSTON steps into the back-up point guard spot vacated by C.J. Watson. The injury-prone vet will be one of the more rarely used back-up PGs . . . TYSHAWN TAYLOR will be a non-factor. FORWARDS: PAUL PIERCE still has something left in the tank. While his athleticism is fading, he's still a cagey scorer who can also play some point forward to set up Williams . . . ANDREI KIRILENKO will be a Swiss army knife sixth man and should see plenty of starts as new head coach Jason Kidd rotates which veterans rest . . . REGGIE EVANS was retained for his rebounding ability and willingness to look ridiculous while flopping . . . ANDRAY BLATCHE will continue to settle in as a second-unit big. He's a name to remember for the future, as Kevin Garnett doesn't have much left in the tank . . . MIRZA TELETOVIC will be a seldom-used option as a stretch four . . . TORNIKE SHENGELIA is still years away from contributing, and the influx of veterans will further delay his development. CENTERS: Last year did a lot to assuage durability concerns for BROOK LOPEZ. He's highly skilled, and he may be forced to grab more rebounds now that Reggie Evans is on the second unit . . . KEVIN GARNETT will start at power forward. He's still an effective pick-and-pop shooter and pick-and-roll defender, but he'll have to rest often during the regular season . . . MASON PLUMLEE is in no position to help this season.
CLEVELAND: GUARDS: There are some durability concerns, but KYRIE IRVING is on the verge of stardom. He should benefit from the arrival of Anthony Bennett, the kind of pick-and-roll weapon Cleveland has lacked . . . DION WAITERS is still a work-in-progress defensively, and this will likely be another developmental year. He might end up settling in as the leader of the second unit . . . JARRETT JACK seems likely to close out games, even if he doesn't technically start. He's a creative shot-maker who will play close to starter's minutes . . . C.J. MILES is more of a situational three-point threat. SERGEY KARASEV, a polished Euro import, could push him for that role . . . CARRICK FELIX doesn't figure to crack this rotation. FORWARDS: No. 1 overall pick ANTHONY BENNETT will see time at both forward spots, and he'll be a pick-and-pop weapon no matter where he's playing. The question is whether he'll defend well enough to stay on the court for 30 minutes . . . There should also be enough minutes for TRISTAN THOMPSON, who hasn't quite put it together. The 22-year-old has upside though, and is a bigger part of Cleveland's future than Anderson Varejao . . . EARL CLARK gives the Cavs a quality second unit player who can play extended minutes if Bennett is overmatched defensively . . . A starter last year, ALONZO GEE figures to be a second-unit glue guy, but might be looking at a lot of DNP-CDs. CENTERS: ANDERSON VAREJAO is once again healthy and once again trade bait. No matter what the starting lineup looks like, he'll play major minutes at the four and five . . . The Cavs are taking a flier on ANDREW BYNUM. With his knee problems, it'd be surprising if he could give them 20-plus good minutes per night . . . TYLER ZELLER is likely the odd man out until Varejao is dealt or Bynum gets injured.

*Nets-Cavaliers Preview* ========================

By TAYLOR BECHTOLD STATS Writer

Brooklyn (44-36) at Cleveland (32-49), 8:00 p.m. EDT

While they're trying to balance between being rested and ready for the postseason, the Brooklyn Nets still have some business to take care of in their regular-season finale.

The Nets again look to clinch the Eastern Conference's fifth seed and try to avoid a fourth loss in five games Wednesday night at the lottery-bound Cleveland Cavaliers.

Although they have the East's second-best record at 34-16 in 2014, the Nets (44-37) have gone 1-3 since a 6-1 stretch following Tuesday's 109-98 loss to an eliminated New York team that played without star Carmelo Anthony.

Alan Anderson and Shaun Livingston sat out with injuries and Mirza Teletovic is away from the team after his wife gave birth to twins, but all are expected to be ready for the playoffs.

"(This) was an example of how not to take a step forward," said Paul Pierce, who had 13 points in just 20 minutes. "We were off our game offensively, defensively, all phases of the game and that's not how you want to go into the playoffs."

The Nets probably won't take their final regular-season contest lightly since they lead Washington by just one game for the fifth seed. They could fall to No. 6 if they lose in Cleveland and Washington beats Boston.

Depending on how things shake out, Brooklyn will open at either Chicago or Toronto in the first round. The Nets were 1-2 versus the Bulls and split four games with the Raptors.

Marcus Thornton came off the bench to score a game-high 24 Tuesday, while Mason Plumlee continued his hot stretch with 16 points and nine rebounds. Plumlee has averaged 16.5 points on 26-of-31 shooting over his last four games.

Pierce totaled 39 points and was 7 for 12 from beyond the arc in Brooklyn's two wins against the Cavaliers. He's also averaged 21.2 points while hitting 18 of 32 3-point attempts over his last six games in the series.

Brooklyn has won four of six in Cleveland, but suffered an opening-night 98-94 loss there Oct. 30.

The Cavaliers (32-49), who will miss the playoffs for a fourth straight season, have dropped four of their last five games. They suffered a 96-85 loss at NBA-worst Milwaukee on Friday and a 111-99 home defeat to lowly Boston on Saturday.

"It's disappointing, just based on our effort," point guard Kyrie Irving said. "Our fans definitely don't deserve that, especially to end the season."

While he's expected to be offered a maximum contract extension this summer, Irving has been noncommittal about whether he'll accept it. He's averaged just 11.7 points and 3.0 assists while shooting 30.3 percent in his last three.

The All-Star also has 31 points on 9-of-32 (28.1 percent) shooting in his previous two home games versus Brooklyn. He's missed the past two meetings overall due to injury.

Dion Waiters has averaged 21.4 points in 14 games since moving into the starting lineup. He's scored a combined 46 while hitting 6 of 12 from 3-point range in his last two against the Nets.

The Cavaliers have ruled out Luol Deng (sore back), possibly ending his brief tenure with the club. The impending free agent was named the J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award winner Tuesday, given to a player, coach or trainer for outstanding community service.

Cleveland has dropped 10 of the last 13 meetings with the Nets.
