KEY GAME INFORMATION
BOSTON: GUARDS: This offense now belongs to RAJON RONDO, and that should be especially true during the regular season . . . Even if he comes off the bench, JASON TERRY figures to see the bulk of the minutes at shooting guard. He provides some much-needed outside shooting after Ray Allen left and should challenge Paul Pierce for the team lead in shot attempts . . . Adding COURTNEY LEE was more of a move for the future. He's a fine young second-unit player for now and should be an heir apparent on one of the wings . . . AVERY BRADLEY could be out until December after shoulder surgery. As Boston's best perimeter defensive player, he could reclaim his starting job in the season's second half . . . The addition of LEANDRO BARBOSA gives Boston another veteran who can create his own offense in the second unit, something that was sorely missing in last year's playoff run. FORWARDS: PAUL PIERCE quietly had a great regular season last year. Though with some improved depth behind him, Rivers might have his 35-year-old All-Star wing rest more often . . . BRANDON BASS gives them another scoring option, even if he does struggle on the defensive end. He'll get full-time minutes only in certain matchups as long as the frontcourt is healthy . . . JEFF GREEN's heart condition is no longer a concern, but the tweener's role in Boston after a year off is cause for worry . . . There are already question marks surrounding rookie JARED SULLINGER's back. He's very similar to Bass: He can score out to mid-range but doesn't play much defense. Expect him to be strictly a second-unit player in his first NBA season . . . CHRIS WILCOX will provide fouls off the bench when healthy. CENTERS: The Celtics are prepared to go with KEVIN GARNETT in the middle, which was the case when they were at their best last season. His role on offense is still knocking down mid-range jumpers, and he's still an elite defensive player . . . Professional flopper JASON COLLINS will fill in nicely for the departed Greg Stiemsma . . . FAB MELO is years away from being ready to contribute (if he actually is ever ready to contribute) and DARKO MILICIC was also added via free agency for more frontcourt depth.
CHARLOTTE: GUARDS: RAMON SESSIONS will have to adjust to a major downgrade in teammates, but he has the kind of versatile offensive skill set to be the focal point of this offense . . . The athletic GERALD HENDERSON has made strides the past two seasons. Realistically, his offensive skills are those of a No. 4 or 5 option . . . Coach Mike Dunlap is high on KEMBA WALKER, who was sometimes overwhelmed as a rookie. With a few new sets built in for him, he could thrive as a sixth man getting starter's minutes . . . BEN GORDON won't overtake Henderson, but should see big minutes as the Cats' only shooter . . . REGGIE WILLIAMS is a D-League talent . . . MATT CARROLL, in the final year of his $27 million deal, symbolizes everything that's gone wrong under Michael Jordan. FORWARDS: Drafting MICHAEL KIDD-GILCHRIST was as much about changing the losing culture as it was adding a piece they needed. MKG's statistical output is a question mark, but he'll see big minutes as a defensive stopper and intangibles guy . . . This team is seriously lacking in the post, where they may have no choice but to play TYRUS THOMAS for significant minutes. The talented but uber-underachieving big man claims to have added 20 pounds of muscle in the offseason. If nothing else, they might showcase him in a desperate attempt to get some trade value . . . Rookie JEFFERY TAYLOR figures to make the team and has the versatility and athleticism to be a respectable second-unit guy. CENTERS: Charlotte sees BISMACK BIYOMBO as a franchise cornerstone. He can certainly rebound and block shots, but his offense is atrocious . . . BRENDAN HAYWOOD brings a veteran presence. At his age he can't go more than 15 or so minutes per night . . . BYRON MULLENS never saw a shot he didn't like. He'll get one more chance to prove he's an NBA rotation player, able to play the four or five . . . DeSAGANA DIOP is doing those things that DeSagana Diop does.

*Celtics-Bobcats Preview* =========================

By TAYLOR BECHTOLD STATS Writer

Boston (26-23) at Charlotte (11-39), 7:00 p.m. EDT

After cooling off the NBA's hottest team in their last game, the Boston Celtics will try to extend their winning streak against the team with the league's worst record.

The Celtics look to win their eighth game in a row since All-Star point guard Rajon Rondo went down on Monday night when they visit the Charlotte Bobcats, losers of seven straight.

Boston (27-23) appeared to be going nowhere fast only two weeks ago when it lost the NBA leader in assists and triple doubles to a season-ending knee injury in the final game of a season-high six-game losing streak.

Instead, the Celtics have responded with a season-best seven consecutive victories - their longest since winning 14 straight in the 2010-11 season.

While four of the first six wins came against teams with losing records, Boston made a big statement on Sunday when it snapped Denver's nine-game win streak with a 118-114 triple-overtime victory.

"Lot of people still doubt us," said forward Jeff Green, who hit a 3-pointer to tie the game late in the first overtime. "Can't come into games thinking we have to impress people."

Paul Pierce had an impressive performance with 27 points, 14 rebounds and 14 assists - the first time in his 15-year career that he's had that many points, rebounds and assists in the same game.

Jason Terry added a season-high 26 points as the Celtics won despite shooting 39.8 percent from the floor.

With 20 points and 18 rebounds against the Nuggets, Kevin Garnett has averaged 18.6 and 9.8, respectively, in the last eight games.

Garnett, though, has had a tough time against Charlotte, averaging 13.5 points in his last 11 meetings. He had just seven points on 2-of-11 shooting in a 100-89 victory over the visiting Bobcats on Jan. 14.

The Celtics average 96.4 points with 23.4 assists per game on the season, but have scored 105.0 and handed out 25.6 assists in seven games without Rondo.

After having six of the seven wins come at home, Boston will try to keep it going on the road against a Charlotte team that has given up 103.4 points on 49.1 percent shooting in its last five games.

The Bobcats (11-39) have also sputtered offensively, shooting their second-lowest field goal percentage of the season (30.7) in an 87-76 loss at Philadelphia on Saturday.

"At this point, we just need to find ways to win," guard Gerald Henderson said.

Guard Ramon Sessions led the team with 20 points, while forward Byron Mullens contributed 16 on 7-of-19 shooting.

Mullens has averaged 18.0 points and 7.5 rebounds in two games since returning to the starting lineup.

Guard Kemba Walker will try to break out of his slump after finishing with six points while shooting 2-of-9 from the floor against the 76ers. Walker, the team's scoring leader at 17.3 points per game, has been held to 10.0 per contest on 34.1 percent shooting in his last four.

He's also struggled against the Celtics, averaging 9.0 points on 7-of-33 shooting in the last three meetings.

The Bobcats, who have lost 34 of 38, are averaging just 88.0 points - 6.1 below their season average - during their latest losing streak.

It doesn't figure to get any easier against Boston, which has limited opponents to 91.9 points per game during its tear.

The Celtics have won eight of the last 10 meetings in Charlotte and 10 of 12 in the series overall.
