Giants' Webb set for major league debut vs. D-backs

A pair of call-ups from Triple-A will try to cool off homer-happy lineups when the Arizona Diamondbacks and San Francisco Giants continue their four-game series Saturday night in Phoenix.

The Giants took the first two games at Chase Field, leapfrogging the D-backs in the crowded National League wild-card chase. Arizona has lost three consecutive games overall to drop one game under .500.

San Francisco won 10-9 in 11 innings on Friday night, when each team belted six home runs -- three coming off the bat of Giants rookie Mike Yastrzemski. His shot to center to lead off the 11th was the difference.

He has five home runs in his past four games.

"When you've a last name like that, you're going to do something special every once in a while, right?" said Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo, whose team rallied from a 7-2 deficit in the eighth inning and was down 9-7 in the 10th.

"This was a tough game to lose. We follow the standings and feel like we're still in this ... but, yeah, these are tough losses."

As for the Saturday pitching matchup, most eyes will be on San Francisco Giants right-hander Logan Webb, who will make his major league debut after his fast track was derailed this season by an 80-game suspension.

Webb, 22, will be the youngest Giants starter to debut since 20-year-old Madison Bumgarner on Sept. 8, 2009.

He is rated as the team's fifth-best prospect -- and No. 1 pitcher -- by MLB Pipeline.

"He was throwing the ball well in (Double-A) Richmond; we thought he did a nice job in a start in (Triple-A) Sacramento, so we're going to slot him in," manager Bruce Bochy told reporters.

Webb had a 1.85 ERA in 12 appearances (10 starts) in the minor leagues this year, the bulk of which came at Richmond. He made one start in Triple-A, allowing one run in seven innings on Monday.

His first five starts of the season came at Richmond before receiving the suspension after a positive test for a banned performance-enhancing substance. He issued a statement at the time saying, in part, "Something someday will be put into the world to prove my innocence."

He said Friday that the chip on his shoulder is "a little bigger now" after the suspension.

"I'll never shake it honestly," he told reporters. "It's something I'll kind of have to deal with forever. Unless, hopefully something comes out."

Arizona will call up right-hander Taylor Clarke to make the Saturday start, although this won't be the rookie's first time with the D-backs. Clarke (4-3, 5.46 ERA) has made 14 appearances (13 starts) this season and was pitching well before he was optioned to Triple-A Reno on Aug. 5.

At that time, the D-backs were juggling six starters, but they now will turn to Clarke to take the spot of Robbie Ray, who went on the injured list Thursday due to lower back spasms.

Clarke, 26, went 2-0 with a 2.65 ERA in his three starts before the last demotion.

"Look, Taylor deserves this opportunity," Lovullo said before Friday's game. "He had been throwing the ball extremely well before he was sent out, so I know he's excited to be back here, and I'm excited to see what he can help us out with."

This will be Clarke's third start against the Giants. He's 1-1 with a 7.71 ERA in 9 1/3 innings vs. San Francisco.
