5/23/2018 DETROIT
ST LOUIS: 2017 83-79, third place
MANAGER Mike Matheny (seventh season)
ADDITIONS: LF Marcell Ozuna, RHP Miles Mikolas, RHP Luke Gregerson, RHP Bud Norris, INF-OF Yairo Munoz
SUBTRACTIONS: RHP Lance Lynn, OF Stephen Piscotty, OF Randal Grichuk, RHP Seung-hwan Oh, RHP Juan Nicasio, SS Aledmys Diaz, RHP Trevor Rosenthal
OUTLOOK: The Cardinals have had one losing season since the start of the century, but they are facing immense pressure from fans after finishing behind the Cubs and Brewers in 2017. St. Louis missed the playoffs for a second consecutive year, the first time that's happened since 2007-2008. For the Cardinals to snap that postseason "drought," they'll need bounce-back seasons from several players -- including a healthy Wainwright on the mound and Carpenter at the plate. Few expect the Cardinals to cede the NL Central title to Chicago for a third consecutive year without putting up a fight, but St. Louis will need Ozuna and Pham to produce as expected. If they do, and the Cardinals can bring along their reworked pitching staff, the potential for a return to the playoffs is there.
MINNESOTA: 2017: 85-77, second place, lost to Yankees in wild-card game.
MANAGER: Paul Molitor (fourth season).
ADDITIONS: RHP Lance Lynn, RHP Jake Odorizzi, DH-1B Logan Morrison, RHP Fernando Rodney, RHP Addison Reed, LHP Zach Duke, SS-3B Erick Aybar, RHP Michael Pineda.
SUBTRACTIONS: RHP Matt Belisle, RHP Bartolo Colon, C Chris Gimenez, DH-1B Kennys Vargas, LHP Hector Santiago, LHP Glen Perkins, LHP Buddy Boshers, RHP Michael Tonkin.
OUTLOOK: After their massive 26-win turnaround last season, earning Molitor the AL Manager of the Year award and a new contract through the 2020 season, the Twins were already on the upswing with their 25-and-under core of Berrios, Buxton, Sano, Rosario and Kepler. Then, after spring training began, they traded for Odorizzi and signed Morrison and Lynn, all at market-bargain prices. They've already had some setbacks, with finger surgery for Santana expected to keep him out for most or all of April, and the gut-punch news of Polanco's suspension, plus the uncertainty that surrounds Sano. But this is a team, even with the bold offseason moves made by AL heavyweights Boston and New York, and the strength of reigning AL Central champion Cleveland, that has the talent and spunk to be right in the playoff mix. With Hughes and Tyler Duffey on track for long-relief roles and a spate of well-regarded prospects set to fill out the rotation at Triple-A Rochester, this is as much starting pitching depth as the Twins have had in years. After using 16 different starters in 2017, they needed that. Rodney, Reed and Duke were important additions to bolster the bullpen, too, after Minnesota relievers ranked 22nd in the majors with a collective 4.40 ERA.
Cardinals look to get key hitters going vs. Twins

Matt Carpenter returned to the St. Louis Cardinals' lineup Tuesday night after getting a few days off to regroup. Now, it's Dexter Fowler's turn to get back on track.

Fowler is expected back among St. Louis' starting nine Wednesday when the Cardinals wrap up a two-game interleague series with the Minnesota Twins at Target Field in Minneapolis, Minn.

The center fielder was expected to be a sparkplug atop St. Louis' lineup this season, but both he and Carpenter got off to the worst offensive starts of their careers. Carpenter was batting .145 and Fowler .146 when the Cardinals arrived in Minneapolis. Carpenter went hitless on Tuesday and his average is down to .140.

Fowler went 0-for-6 in St. Louis' 2-1 victory Saturday night and spent nearly an hour in the batting cage after the game, trying to find a way out of his funk.

"No one likes to (stink)," Fowler told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Cardinals manager Mike Matheny had considered starting Fowler Tuesday in the series opener but opted to give him another day off and said he has kept Fowler in the loop the entire time.

"Something is just off," Matheny said. "If you can pinpoint it, you'd fix it. 'Oh, I found something!' That's typically the conversation. But that's after days of repetition and after lots of sleepless nights trying to figure it out. You grind your way through it.

"It's all about confidence. That's the root of it. I don't know which comes first. When the confidence is lacking, with anything you do out there, your lack of success diminishes significantly."

If Fowler does return Wednesday, he'll be greeted by a familiar face as right-hander Lance Lynn takes the mound for Minnesota.

Lynn spent his last six seasons with the Cardinals, going 72-47 with a 3.38 ERA. Lynn turned down a $17.4 million qualifying offer from St. Louis and didn't land with the Twins -- who signed him to a one-year deal -- until late in spring training.

Lynn didn't face the Cardinals when the Twins visited St. Louis last week, but didn't mince words about his departure.

"I was here for seven years, and there's no loyalty in the game," Lynn told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "You've noticed players not having the loyalty anymore either. ... Maybe I'll just go on and be a hired gun the rest of my career; I don't really care."

But he's gotten off to a slow start in his new home. Lynn is 1-3 with a 7.34 ERA through seven starts this season, and he allowed four runs on eight hits and two walks on Friday against the Angels in his last outing.

He was bothered by a "stinger" in his back and hip during the start, but still managed to go through 4 2/3 innings.

"I've had it before; it's not the first time," Lynn said. "I do get it every once in a while when you're really trying to get on a pitch or something like that. Just a big body coming down a mound -- it happens sometimes."

Right-hander Miles Mikolas (5-0, 2.51 ERA) gets the start for St. Louis. He allowed just a run on five hits while working 6 2/3 innings against the Padres on Thursday to record the win.

Wednesday will be his first career appearance against the Twins.
