Rotation: RH Jon Gray (10-10, 4.61 ERA), RH Tyler Chatwood (12-9, 3.87), LH Tyler Anderson (5-6, 3.54), LH Kyle Freeland (6-3, 3.91 at Triple-A), RH German Marquez (1-1, 5.23)
Key relievers: Greg Holland (did not pitch in 2016), Adam Ottavino (1-3, 2.67, 7/12 SV), Mike Dunn (6-1, 3.40, 4/8 SV with Marlins), Jake McGee (2-3, 4.73, 15/19 SV), Jordan Lyles (4-5, 5.83), Chad Qualls (2-0, 5.23), Chris Rusin (3-5, 3.74), Carlos Estevez (3-7, 5.24, 11/18 SV)
Hot spots: Catcher and closer. Wolters was 23 years old and hadn't played a game above Double-A last year when the Rockies claimed him off waivers from Cleveland. Now he's the most experienced catcher on the Rockies' 40-man roster, having played 71 major league games. A pitch-framing specialist with rare agility behind the plate, Wolters must coax pitchers through Coors Field and its occasional malefactions. While Colorado's rotation is the best it's looked in years, the ninth inning could be an adventure. Seven pitchers recorded a save for the Rockies in 2016. Now, a man who hasn't thrown a competitive pitch since 2015 might be their best option. Holland, 31, saved 125 games for the Royals from 2013-15 before elbow surgery paused his career. Ottavino will close if Holland can't.
Outlook: The Rockies probably won't catch the Dodgers or Giants this season, but a .500 record or better would be a big boost for their rebuilding movement. Black skippered the Padres from 2007-15, then spent last year in the Angels' front office. His first task: keeping morale steady after a spate of injuries and illness struck the clubhouse. The Rockies' biggest offseason acquisition was veteran Desmond, but he'll miss the beginning of the season with a fractured hand. Pitcher Chad Bettis, who led the Rockies with 32 starts last year, is undergoing chemotherapy treatment for testicular cancer. Backup catcher Tom Murphy (hairline fracture in forearm) and outfielder Dahl (ribs) could also start the season on the DL. If they can get past these early hurdles, the Rockies will be competitive at worst and dangerous at best.
LA DODGERS: 2016: 91-71, first place, lost to Chicago Cubs in NLCS
Manager: Dave Roberts (second season)
Who's new? IF Logan Forsythe, OF Franklin Gutierrez, OF Brett Eibner, RHP Sergio Romo
Who's gone? OF Josh Reddick, C Carlos Ruiz, RHP Joe Blanton, RHP Jose De Leon, LHP J.P. Howell, RHP Louis Coleman, RHP Jesse Chavez
Projected lineup: 2B Logan Forsythe (.264, 20 HR, 52 RBI with Rays) or Chase Utley (.252, 14, 52), SS Corey Seager (.308, 26 72), 3B Justin Turner (.275, 27, 90), 1B Adrian Gonzalez (.285, 18, 90), RF Yasiel Puig (.263, 11, 45) or Andre Ethier (.208, 1, 2 in 16 games), C Yasmani Grandal (.228, 27, 72), CF Joc Pederson (.246, 25, 68), LF Andrew Toles (.314, 3, 16) or Trayce Thompson (.225, 13, 32)
Rotation: LH Clayton Kershaw (12-4, 1.69 ERA), RH Kenta Maeda (16-11, 3.48), LH Rich Hill (12-5, 2.12 with A's and Dodgers), RH Brandon McCarthy (2-3, 4.95), LH Hyun-Jin Ryu (0-1, 11.57 in one game) or LH Alex Wood (1-4, 3.73)
Key relievers: RH Kenley Jansen (3-2, 1.83, 47/53 SV), RH Pedro Baez (3-2, 3.04), LH Grant Dayton (0-1, 2.05), LH Luis Avilan (3-0, 3.20), RH Josh Fields (1-0, 4.63 with Astros and Dodgers), RH Sergio Romo (1-0, 2.64 with Giants), RH Chris Hatcher (5-4, 5.53)
Hot spots: Outfield and rotation. The Dodgers set a record for Disabled List trips in 2016. Ethier, who missed most of last season with a broken tibia, compared his recent back injury to 'Groundhog Day.' Even without Ethier there isn't room for Puig, Pederson, Toles, Thompson, Scott Van Slyke, Franklin Gutierrez and Brett Eibner. The pitching staff was decimated last year too, but a deep farm system produced a wave of capable reinforcements. If Scott Kazmir, McCarthy or Ryu can't pitch, Julio Urias, Brock Stewart and Ross Stripling can step in.
Outlook: After two straight winters laying low on the free agent market, Andrew Friedman bet big on his 2016 roster. Turner, Jansen, Hill and Utley all re-signed, giving the Dodgers a chance to prove last season's NLCS run wasn't a fluke. A full season of Kershaw and Hill ' to name just two ' would improve the team's chances of claiming a fifth straight division title. If the Dodgers want to take the next step, they'll have to get past the defending champion Chicago Cubs, a potential perennial powerhouse whose roster remains similarly intact.
PREVIEW
McCarthy, Anderson get nods as Dodgers host Rockies

LOS ANGELES -- The Los Angeles Dodgers do not have a pitching fountain of youth, but the club clearly has a mountain of physical therapists.

Aside from Clayton Kershaw -- and even he spent part of 2016 on the DL -- the Dodgers rotation is flush with veterans who have overcome traumatic injuries that sidetracked their careers, none more so than Brandon McCarthy, Sunday's starter against the Colorado Rockies.

Brandon McCarthy is in his 12th season with six different teams, with his lone breakthrough being a half season for the Yankees in 2014 when he went 7-5 with a 2.89 ERA in 14 starts after being traded abruptly by Arizona.

This has been his breakout season, at the age of 33. He brings a 6-3 record and 2.87 ERA into the game in 12 starts, allowing two runs or less in 10 of them. The Dodgers are 8-4 in McCarthy's starts, and his record would be better with more run support. The Dodgers scored just seven runs in those four losses.

Run support is great; being healthy is even better. Shoulder soreness in 2009 led to surgery and cost him the 2010 season. He suffered a skull fracture when hit by a line drive in 2012 and was out two months. A year later, he was still having seizures from the injury as well as shoulder issues.

The Dodgers gave him a four-year deal based on that half-season with the Yankees, but he suffered a torn ulnar collateral ligament early in 2015 and underwent Tommy John surgery. He pitched a total of 63 innings in 14 games in 2015 and 2016.

Healthy is always relative with pitchers. The Dodgers are uber-cautious, so McCarthy skipped two turns this season with a blister and some soreness in his left shoulder.

"His ability has always been there," manager Dave Roberts said. "No one has ever doubted that. He hasn't had many seasons when he's been able to hold a regular spot in the rotation."

McCarthy has a 2-3 record and 4.57 ERA in eight career starts against the Rockies, including three starts last season in which he posted a 2.70 ERA.

Rockies starter Tyler Anderson (3-5, 5.75) is fresh from a stint on the DL (knee) that's been bothering him since April. He pitched several games with a brace before finally taking time off to heal.

He has only three quality starts in the 11 he has made this season, and he's allowing 10.3 hits and 1.9 home runs per nine innings. He's 2-3 lifetime with a 3.57 ERA against the Dodgers, but was shelled in three starts this season, allowing 16 hits and 10 earned runs in 15 2/3 innings. But his return to the rotation is welcome, what with the Rockies having played their way into contention in the NL West on the strength of four rookies in the rotation.

He pitched an inning of relief his first game back, his first non-start since he was a college star at Oregon. "I was ready to start the day I got off the DL," Anderson said. "I really didn't know what to do with myself in the bullpen, it's been so long since I pitched in relief."
