Manager: Jeff Banister (third season)
Who's new? 1B Mike Napoli, 1B James Loney, INF Will Middlebrooks, RHP Andrew Cashner, RHP Tyson Ross, RHP Mike Hauschild
Who's gone? 1B Mitch Moreland, INF/OF Ian Desmond, OF/DH Carlos Beltran, RHP Derek Holland, RHP Colby Lewis, RHP Shawn Tolleson, RHP Lucas Harrell
Projected lineup: CF Carlos Gomez (.231, 13 HR, 53 RBI, 18 SB in 118 games with Astros and Rangers), DH Shin-Soo Choo (.242, 7, 17, 6 in 48 games), 3B Adrian Beltre (.300, 32, 104), 1B Mike Napoli (.239, 34, 101 with Indians), 2B Rougned Odor (.271, 33, 88, 14 SB), C Jonathan Lucroy (.292, 24, 81 with Brewers and Rangers), RF Nomar Mazara (.266, 20, 64), SS Elvis Andrus (.302, 8, 69, 24 SB), LF Jurickson Profar (.239, 5, 20) or Ryan Rua (.258, 8, 22, 9 SB)
Rotation: LH Cole Hamels (15-5, 3.32 ERA), RH Yu Darvish (7-5, 3.42 in 17 games), LH Martin Perez (10-11, 4.39), RH A.J. Griffin (7-4, 5.07), RH Andrew Cashner (5-11, 5.25 with Padres and Marlins)
Key relievers: RH Sam Dyson (3-2, 2.43, 38/43 SV), RH Matt Bush (7-2, 2.48), RH Jeremy Jeffress (27/28 SV with Brewers and Rangers), RH Tony Barnette (7-3, 2.09), LH Alex Claudio (4-1, 2.79), RH Keone Kela (5-1, 6.09)
Hot spots: Designated hitter and left field. Choo, Napoli and Joey Gallo are all candidates to DH. Gallo, a perennial prospect with prodigious power, can make it interesting by seizing his first-ever Opening Day roster spot. Otherwise Napoli (a first baseman) and Choo (an outfielder) can switch off as needed. Moving Desmond to the outfield was successful enough last year that the Rangers are taking a similar approach with Profar. The oft-injured 24-year-old will try to break camp as a left fielder, platooning with Rua.
Outlook: Coming off back-to-back division titles, the Rangers begin 2017 with a weakened farm system and the footsteps of the Astros and Mariners passing them by ' or at least catching up. There's still a lot to like here. Napoli was a huge bargain on a $6 million contract following his 34-homer season in Cleveland. He'll join Beltre and Odor to form a dangerous middle of the order. Darvish is entering his first full season back from Tommy John surgery, and he and catcher Lucroy are entering their long-awaited walk years. This isn't the deepest roster in the AL but it's capable of winning another division title if its stars can avoid the disabled list.
NY YANKEES: 2016: 84-78, fourth place
Manager: Joe Girardi (10th season)
Who's new? 1B/DH Chris Carter, 1B/LF/DH Matt Holliday, RHP Aroldis Chapman
Who's gone? 1B Mark Teixeira, C Brian McCann, RHP Nate Eovaldi, RHP Kirby Yates, RHP Anthony Swarzak, RHP Nick Goody, RHP Blake Parker
Projected lineup: LF Brett Gardner (.261, 7 HR, 41 RBI, 16 SB), CF Jacoby Ellsbury (.263, 9, 56, 20), C Gary Sanchez (.299, 20, 42 in 53 games), DH Matt Holliday (.246, 20, 62 with Cardinals), 1B Greg Bird (did not play in 2016), 2B Starlin Castro (.270, 21, 70), 3B Chase Headley (.253, 14, 51), RH Aaron Judge (.179, 4, 10 in 27 games) or Aaron Hicks (.217, 8, 31), SS Tyler Wade (.259, 5, 27 at Double-A) or Ronald Torreyes (.258, 1, 12)
Rotation: RH Masahiro Tanaka (14-4, 3.07), LH C.C. Sabathia (9-12, 3.91), RH Michael Pineda (6-12, 4.82), RH Luis Severino (3-8, 5.83), RH Chad Green (2-4, 4.73) or RH Adam Warren (4-2, 3.26) or RH Luis Cessa (4-4, 4.35) or RH Bryan Mitchell (1-2, 3.24 in five games)
Key relievers: LH Aroldis Chapman (4-1, 1.55, 36/39 SV), RH Dellin Betances (3-6, 3.08), RH Tyler Clippard (3-6, 3.57), LH Tommy Layne (2-0, 3.38), LH Chasen Shreve (2-1, 5.18)
Hot spots: Fifth starter and right field. The starter's competition is not urgent ' the Yankees have five off-days in the first month of the season ' but it's interesting nonetheless. Green, Cessa, Warren and Mitchell combined to make 22 major league starts last season. None had an outstanding spring training, so the Yankees might choose to divide the load again. Some will go to Triple-A, others to the bullpen. Someone named Aaron (Judge or Hicks) will be the Yankees' right fielder this season. If either falters, Tyler Austin or Rob Refsnyder could seize their at-bats.
Outlook: The Yankees will employ fewer past-their-prime position players in 2017 than any season this decade. Is their next generation of homegrown talent ready to take over? Sanchez is the most advanced prospect ' the catcher hit 20 home runs in 53 games as a rookie ' but beyond him lies several question marks. Greg Bird, Clint Frazier, Gleyber Torres, Judge and Austin (who was stalled in camp by a foot injury) will get a chance once they're ready. The pitching staff is led by Tanaka and the ferocious bullpen combo of Chapman, Betances and Clippard. But depth is a real question mark, and there are no blue-chip prospects at Triple-A waiting for their moment.
PREVIEW
Rangers' Darvish, Yankees' Tanaka set for first U.S. meeting

NEW YORK -- Two nations will turn their eyes to Yankee Stadium on Friday night, when Japanese stars Masahiro Tanaka and Yu Darvish oppose each other on American soil for the first time as the New York Yankees host the Texas Rangers in the opener of a three-game series.

The matchup between the Yankees' Tanaka (5-7, 6.34 ERA) and the Rangers' Darvish (6-5, 3.35) marks the first time they have faced each other since they were in Japan's Pacific League in 2011, when Darvish outdueled Tanaka as the Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters edged the Tohuku Rakuten Golden Eagles 3-1.

Darvish joined the Rangers the following season while Tanaka headed to the Yankees in 2014.

"I think it's something that hopefully Japanese baseball fans are looking forward to," Tanaka told reporters through an interpreter Thursday before the Yankees' 10-5 loss to the Los Angeles Angels at Yankee Stadium. "I just want to go out there and come up with a strong performance."

Darvish expressed a similarly narrow vision earlier Thursday, when he spoke to reporters before the host Rangers beat the Toronto Blue Jays 11-4.

"My focus is to win the game," Darvish said through an interpreter.

Tanaka and Darvish will be looking to bounce back from rough starts. Tanaka took the loss Saturday, when he gave up five runs over four innings as the Yankees fell to the Oakland Athletics 5-2. Darvish absorbed the defeat Sunday, when he allowed a season-high five runs over five innings as the Rangers dropped a 7-3 decision to the Seattle Mariners.

Darvish's sluggish start looks like a hiccup -- he tossed seven innings of one-hit ball in his previous start, when he earned the win in the Rangers' 6-1 victory over the Houston Astros.

But Tanaka is in the midst of an extended slump. He is 0-6 with an 8.91 ERA in his last seven starts, a stretch in which he has given up at least five runs five times.

The only positive lately for Tanaka? He has struck out 44 and walked only 10 over 33 1/3 innings in the last seven starts, which has manager Joe Girardi confident Tanaka's stuff is still sharp.

"It tells you it's in there," Girardi said. "To me, that's a good sign. It's in there. It's just being more consistent."

The Yankees and Rangers have been consistent lately, albeit in different ways. New York (39-31) has lost eight of nine to fall into a virtual tie for first place in the American League East with the Boston Red Sox. Texas (36-36) has won nine of 13 to climb within 1 1/2 games of the second AL wild card.

"The only feeling we know is that for the first time in the last week and a half, the team is together," Rangers outfielder Carlos Gomez told the team's website Thursday after hitting two homers in his sixth game back from the disabled list.

Gomez has five homers and 14 RBIs since returning to action June 16 after missing a little more than a month due to a right hamstring injury.

Tanaka is 0-1 with a 7.50 ERA in two career starts against the Rangers. Darvish is 3-1 with a 2.01 ERA in five turns against the Yankees.
