Rotation: RH Julio Teheran (7-10, 3.21), RH Bartolo Colon (15-8, 3.43 with Mets), LH Jaime Garcia (10-13, 4.67 with Cardinals), RH R.A. Dickey (10-15, 4.46 with Blue Jays), RH Mike Foltynewicz (9-5, 4.31)

Hot spots: Second base and rotation. Phillips, acquired from the Reds in February, is a placeholder for prospect Ozzie Albies at second base. Albies, 20, won the Double-A Southern League batting title in 2016 and is a potential September call-up at least. The rotation is in a similar state of transition, but it's more complicated. Veterans Teheran, Colon, Dickey and Garcia have jobs for now. Youngsters Foltynewicz, Aaron Blair, Matt Wisler, Lucas Sims and Sean Newcomb are pushing to seize long-term spots.
Outlook: In the inaugural season at SunTrust Park, the Braves will try to crack .500 for the first time since 2013. Their rebuilding work isn't finished, but the front office added about $30 million in salary over the winter. That ought to be enough to make the Braves watchable again. Now, the veterans trying to extend their careers in Atlanta (Colon, Dickey, Phillips, Kemp) are almost as intriguing as the prospects. The sight of 23-year-old shortstop Swanson backing up 40-something pitchers Colon and Dickey could be something special.
NY METS: 2016: 87-75, second place
Manager: Terry Collins (seventh season)
Who's new? No one of note
Who's gone? 1B James Loney, IF/OF Kelly Johnson, OF Alejandro De Aza, RHP Bartolo Colon, LHP Jonathon Niese
Projected lineup: CF Curtis Granderson (.237, 30 HR, 59 RBI), 3B David Wright (.226, 7, 14 in 37 games), LF Yoenis Cespedes (.280, 31, 86), RF Jay Bruce (.250, 33, 99 with Reds and Mets), 2B Neil Walker (.282, 23, 55), SS Asdrubal Cabrera (.280, 23, 62), 1B Lucas Duda (.229, 7, 23 in 47 games), C Travis d'Arnaud (.247, 4, 15)
Rotation: RH Noah Syndergaard (14-9, 2.60 ERA), RH Jacob deGrom (7-8, 3.04), RH Matt Harvey (4-10, 4.86), LH Steven Matz (9-8, 3.40), RH Zack Wheeler or RH Robert Gsellman (4-2, 2.42) or RH Seth Lugo (5-2, 2.67)
Key relievers: RH Jeurys Familia (3-4, 2.55, 51/56 SV), RH Addison Reed (4-2, 1.97), RH Hansel Robles (6-4, 3.48), LH Jerry Blevins (4-2, 2.79), RH Fernando Salas (3-7, 3.91)
Hot spots: First base and third base. Duda missed 115 games last season because of a stress fracture in his lower back. When healthy, the veteran first baseman slugged a career-low .714. Former first-round draft pick Dominic Smith, 21, could be in position to battle for the starting spot soon. He'll likely begin the season at Triple-A. Franchise third baseman Wright doesn't have a hot prospect pushing him out the door, but how much game does he have left? The perennial All-Star only began throwing a baseball in February after an eight-month recovery from neck surgery. Wright had a degenerative back and has only played 75 games the last two years. Getting a full season from him at age 34 would be a shock.
Outlook: The Mets' championship window opened with a surprise World Series run in 2015, and their front office seems convinced it's still open. The club invested four years and $110 million to keep Yoenis Cespedes in the outfield. The Mets also exercised club options on Jay Bruce and Jose Reyes, and brought Neil Walker back on a qualifying offer. The result? Almost everyone returns from a club that lost a wild-card game to the Giants last October. The franchise is oozing young pitching ' Syndergaard might be the best right-hander on the planet ' but another World Series appearance might be too much to expect from a team that ranked 25th in runs per game last season.
PREVIEW
Dickey makes return as Braves visit Mets

NEW YORK -- R.A. Dickey has never met the players he was traded for following his National League Cy Young Award-winning season in 2012. However, the former New York Mets right-hander will share a field Thursday with at least one of the players with whom he will be forever linked.

Dickey will make his debut at Citi Field as a visiting pitcher on Thursday when he takes the mound for the Atlanta Braves against Mets right-hander Noah Syndergaard in the finale of an abbreviated two-game series.

The Braves (7-12) won 8-2 on Wednesday to snap a six-game losing streak. The Mets (8-12) have lost nine of 10.

Dickey, a knuckleballer, captivated Mets fans during an otherwise dour season in 2012, when he led the NL in victories (20) and strikeouts (230) for a 74-win team while becoming the franchise's first Cy Young Award winner since Dwight Gooden in 1985.

"When you share a season like I did in 2012, on a team that (wasn't) competing, really, at the end, it gave everybody something to look forward to, including myself," Dickey said Wednesday afternoon. "So to be able to kind of share that connection with those guys -- the New York fan base has always treated me so great. I've always appreciated that."

However, with Dickey nearing his 38th birthday as the 2012 season ended, and the Mets still in rebuilding mode, he realized general manager Sandy Alderson likely would try to sell high. Alderson did just that when he traded Dickey and catchers Mike Nickeas and Josh Thole to the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for Syndergaard, minor league catcher Travis d'Arnaud, minor league outfielder Wuilmer Becerra and catcher John Buck.

Dickey spent four seasons with the Blue Jays before signing as a free agent last November with the Braves, whose Opening Day utility man was Chase d'Arnaud -- Travis' older brother.

"Of course, he brought it up that I was someone his brother was traded for," Dickey said with a grin. "We had a conversation around that. I didn't spend any time with either of them. Only follow what they've been able to do on the field. I wish them both the best."

Now Mets fans have fallen in love with the long-haired Syndergaard, whose fastball regularly hits 100 mph. He also occupies Dickey's old locker at the end of New York's clubhouse.

But both Dickey and Mets manager Terry Collins would rather leave it to others to get excited about the narrative involved in the clash of the intertwined aces past and present.

"I understand where I am and I understand that that's a story for a lot of people," Dickey said. "For me, it's kind of just a by-product of something that happened once. I'm much more concerned with turning in a quality outing."

Said Collins with a laugh on Tuesday: "I don't think about that stuff. That's newspaper things."

Dickey took the loss in his most recent start on April 20 despite giving up three runs on three hits and two walks while striking out three over seven innings in a 3-2 setback to the Washington Nationals. He is 2-0 with a 1.59 ERA in three games (two starts) against the Mets.

Syndergaard took the loss in his most recent start, giving up five runs (three earned) on seven hits and no walks while striking out 10 over seven innings as the Mets fell to the Philadelphia Phillies 6-4 on April 20. He is 0-1 with a 3.92 ERA in four career starts against the Braves.

"Noah's got to go out and shut them down, and we'll take our chances," Collins said.
