Hot spots: First base and right field. Veteran Valencia has the first baseman's job for now, but Dan Vogelbach is the heir apparent who will begin the season at Triple-A. Vogelbach, 24, slimmed down this offseason ' a necessity when you're 6 feet tall, weigh 250 pounds and expect to play your first full major league season ' and might have more weight to lose. Valencia, 32, has never been a full-time first baseman in seven seasons. Haniger is known more for his glove than his bat, but he struggled (.713 OPS) in limited time at a hitter-friendly park in Arizona last year. Safeco Field won't be as kind. Cruz will play right field if Haniger doesn't.
Outlook: General Manager Jerry Dipoto has paired a staff of fly-ball pitchers with three rangy outfielders, an exercise in team-building he once tried with the Angels. Dipoto caused a stir by executing 40 roster transactions during the offseason, but is it possible he didn't do enough? Haniger has never been atop a major league depth chart. Pitchers Gallardo and Smyly are coming off shaky seasons in Baltimore and Tampa Bay, respectively. On paper, the Mariners look like a top-heavy team without much help in the minors if the bottom falls out. That was the case for Dipoto with the Angels too, and sometimes it worked out OK. More often it didn't.
DETROIT: 2016: 86-75, second place.
Manager: Brad Ausmus (fourth season). He's Here: C Alex Avila, OF Mikie Mahtook. He's Outta Here: OF Cameron Maybin, SS Erick Aybar, C Jarrod Saltalamacchia, 3B Casey McGehee.
Projected lineup: 2B Ian Kinsler (.288, 28 HRs, 83 RBIs), 3B Nicholas Castellanos (.285, 18, 58 in 110 games), 1B Miguel Cabrera (.316, 38, 108), DH Victor Martinez (.289, 27, 86), RF J.D. Martinez (.307, 22, 68 in 120 games), LF Justin Upton (.246, 31, 87), C James McCann (.221, 12, 48) or Alex Avila (.213, 7, 11 with White Sox), CF Mikie Mahtook (.195, 3, 11 with Tampa Bay) or Tyler Collins (.235, 4, 15), SS Jose Iglesias (.255, 4, 32).
Rotation: RH Justin Verlander (16-9, 3.04 ERA, 254 Ks), RH Michael Fulmer (11-7, 3.06), RH Jordan Zimmermann (9-7, 4.87), LH Daniel Norris (4-2, 3.38), LH Matt Boyd (6-5, 4.53).
Key relievers: RH Francisco Rodriguez (3-4, 3.24, 44/49 saves), RH Bruce Rondon (5-2, 2.97), LH Justin Wilson (4-5, 4.14, 1 save), RH Alex Wilson (4-0, 2.96), RH Anibal Sanchez (7-13, 5.87 in 35 games, 26 starts). Hot Spot: Back of Starting Rotation. Zimmermann and Norris could be major contributors if healthy, but the No. 5 spot in the rotation is much more uncertain. Sanchez has a big contract and some impressive career accomplishments, but he's 33 and coming off two straight disappointing seasons. Boyd was merely serviceable a season ago.
Outlook: The Tigers have made no secret of the fact that they'll need to cut costs soon, but they've generally put off doing so. Verlander, Cabrera and Kinsler are back, and Detroit is ready to make another bid for a postseason spot. The Tigers fell just short of a wild card last season, and the team's top players aren't getting any younger, so this could be the last shot for Detroit to win big before a significant overhaul. Verlander and Cabrera are still producing like stars, and Fulmer won Rookie of the Year honors last year. If the Tigers are going to take another step forward, they'll probably need Zimmermann and Norris to perform well after both dealt with injury problems a season ago. Speaking of injuries: J.D. Martinez sprained his right foot March 18 and is expected to miss the start of the season. The Tigers finished eight games behind Cleveland in 2016. Closing that gap won't be easy, and a lot might depend on whether Detroit can stay healthy.
PREVIEW
Tigers' Verlander looks to regain control vs. Mariners

DETROIT -- Control problems are rarely an issue for Detroit Tigers ace Justin Verlander. That's why it was so surprising to see him issue a career-high tying six walks in his last start.

Verlander's shaky start in Minnesota on Friday led to his second straight loss. Manager Brad Ausmus has no fear about a carryover to the right-hander's start against the Seattle Mariners on Thursday afternoon.

"He'll be ready," Ausmus said. "I'm not the least bit concerned with Verlander. He'll be fine. It was uncharacteristic, but I don't think the walks will be a problem."

The Mariners might be just what Verlander (1-2, 6.04 ERA) needs to return to his usual dominant self. He has a 10-8 record and 3.25 ERA against them in 20 career appearances, recording quality starts in his past nine outings vs. Seattle.

If Detroit's offense can bounce back, Verlander will not have to do anything special to record his second win this season. The Tigers were blanked 8-0 on Wednesday after scoring 32 combined runs in the previous two games.

Detroit is receiving big boosts from two players called up from Triple-A Toledo to replace injured players. First baseman John Hicks is 7-for-14 with six RBIs. Outfielder Jim Adduci, who didn't play Wednesday, recorded a pair of three-hit games in his first two starts with the Tigers.

"The ironic part is we've gotten some production from people who weren't even on the roster starting the season in Hicks and Adduci," Ausmus said. "You would think with Miguel Cabrera out of the lineup and J.D. Martinez out of the lineup, it would be tougher to score runs, but these guys have filled in very well."

The Tigers might have one of their starters back in action Thursday. Shortstop Jose Iglesias is expected to be activated off the seven-day disabled list. He was sidelined due to concussion symptoms.

Seattle could have one of its regulars returning to the lineup, too. Third baseman Kyle Seager has not started the last four games because of a sore hip.

"He argued and pleaded to get into the lineup (Wednesday)," manager Scott Servais said. "We certainly don't want to lose Kyle for an extended period of time, and another day is only going to help it."

Verlander will be opposed by another veteran, Hisashi Iwakuma (0-2, 5.31 ERA). In his last start, Iwakuma gave up three runs in 5 1/3 innings to Oakland on Friday. The A's hit two home runs off him, and he has given up at least one long ball in each of his four starts.

"He threw the ball pretty well," Servais said. "With Kuma, he has a way of finding a way to work through lineups and get deep in the game. Like any pitcher, you're going to stub your toe once in a while, and that's what happened with him. But his stuff was better, sharper, crisper. His velocity was back up more to what we expect out of Kuma, in the 87-88 (mph) range, and working his secondary pitches off that. I expect him to be fine (Thursday) and get deep in the game."

Iwakuma is 2-2 with a 3.47 ERA in eight career appearances (seven starts) against Detroit.
