Manager: John Gibbons (10th season)
Who's new? 1B/DH Kendrys Morales, C Jarrod Saltalamacchia, IF/OF Steve Pearce, IF Lourdes Gurriel, LHP J.P. Howell, RHP Joe Smith
Who's gone? 1B/DH Edwin Encarnacion, OF Michael Saunders, C Josh Thole, C Dioner Navarro, OF Junior Lake, RHP R.A. Dickey, LHP Brett Cecil, RHP Joaquin Benoit
Projected lineup: 2B Devon Travis (.300, 11 HR, 50 RBI), 3B Josh Donaldson (.284, 37, 99), RF Jose Bautista (.234, 22, 69), DH Kendrys Morales (.263, 30, 93 with Royals), SS Troy Tulowitzki (.254, 24, 79), C Russell Martin (.231, 20, 74), 1B Justin Smoak (.217, 14, 34), CF Kevin Pillar (.266, 7, 53, 14 SB), LF Ezequiel Carrera (.248, 6, 23)
Rotation: RH Marco Estrada (9-9, 3.48 ERA), LH J.A. Happ (20-4, 3.18), RH Marcus Stroman (9-10, 4.37), RH Aaron Sanchez (15-2, 3.00), LH Francisco Liriano (8-13, 4.69 with Pirates and Blue Jays)
Key relievers: RH Roberto Osuna (4-3, 2.68, 36/42 SV), RH Jason Grilli (6-4, 3.64), RH Joe Biagini (4-3, 3.06), LH J.P. Howell (1-1, 4.09 with Dodgers), RH Joe Smith (1-4, 3.82 with Angels), LH Aaron Loup (0-0, 5.02)
Hot spots: bullpen. The Blue Jays signed only a couple high-profile free agents (retaining Bautista, adding Morales) and brought in many lower-profile veterans mostly to compete for bullpen jobs. Howell and Smith, signed to low-risk deals, are all but guaranteed jobs. But what of Dominic Leone, Mat Latos, Mike Bolsinger, Lucas Harrell and Leonel Campos? Toronto seems to be crowd-sourcing its middle innings with low-risk, right-handed options. Up to a half-dozen pitchers could be competing for one or two jobs.
Outlook: The Blue Jays' roster is enviably balanced, albeit among the older ones in the league. Toronto led the AL in ERA last year. Their entire starting rotation returns, and their veteran bullpen is set up well to support second-year closer Osuna. Ironically, the youngest player in the Jays' starting lineup, 26-year-old Travis, has the biggest health concern of the bunch. He didn't appear in a spring training game until recently because of offseason knee surgery. Encarnacion, who was good for .270/30/100 every year, will be missed. The question now is whether Morales (33), Bautista (36), Tulowitzki (32) and Martin (34) are still close enough to their primes to power another playoff run. | | ST LOUIS: 2016: 86-76, second place
Manager: Mike Matheny (sixth season)
Who's new? OF Dexter Fowler, C Eric Fryer, LH Brett Cecil
Who's gone? 1B Brandon Moss, OF Matt Holliday, OF Jeremy Hazelbaker, RHP Jaime Garcia, RHP Seth Maness, RHP Jerome Williams
Projected lineup: CF Dexter Fowler (.276, 13 HR, 48 RBI, 13 SB with Cubs), SS Aledmys Diaz (.300, 17, 65), 1B Matt Carpenter (.271, 21, 68), RF Stephen Piscotty (.273, 22, 85), C Yadier Molina (.307, 8, 58), 3B Jedd Gyorko (.243, 30, 59), 2B Kolten Wong (.240, 5, 23), LF Randal Grichuk (.240, 24, 68)
Rotation: RH Carlos Martinez (16-9, 3.04 ERA), RH Adam Wainwright (13-9, 4.62), RH Mike Leake (9-12, 4.69), RH Michael Wacha (7-7, 5.09), RH Lance Lynn (did not pitch - Tommy John surgery)
Key relievers: RH Seung-hwan Oh (6-3, 1.92 ERA 19/23 SV), LH Kevin Siegrist (6-3, 2.77), RH Trevor Rosenthal (2-4, 4.46, 14/18 SV), LH Brett Cecil (1-7, 3.93 with Blue Jays), RH Jonathan Broxton (4-2, 4.30), RH Matt Bowman (2-5, 3.46), RH Miguel Socolovich (1-0, 2.00)
Hot spots: Rotation. The back end looked like a big leap of faith when spring training began. Wainwright and Wacha are coming off their worst seasons. Another 2013 World Series mainstay, Lynn, didn't pitch last season as he recovered from Tommy John surgery. Then, on the first day of camp, 22-year-old right-hander Alex Reyes learned he needed Tommy John himself. That leaves a lot of question marks after ace Martinez ' more than any Cardinals staff has faced in years.
Outlook: This 40-man roster hints at a team in transition. Venerable 34-year-old catcher Molina is still St. Louis' biggest star. Reyes' injury hurts the youth movement, but the Cardinals are still stacked with talented 20-something sluggers ' Piscotty, Diaz, Gyorko and Grichuk ' who could emerge as household names. Adding Fowler's speed and patience should complement an already deep lineup. The pitching staff is a different matter. Barring a big resurgence from Wainwright, Lynn and Wacha (or a big trade) it's hard to see the Cardinals contending for more than a wild card spot in the Cubs' shadow. |
| | Blue Jays seek first series win of season
ST. LOUIS -- After leaping over catcher Yadier Molina to score the tiebreaking run in the top of the seventh inning Tuesday night, Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Chris Coghlan returned to the bench, where he was greeted by appreciative teammates. Manager John Gibbons had a message for him as well, telling him he had never seen that before. "I figured it was a compliment since he's been in the game 78 years," Coghlan said of Gibbons as a media scrum laughed. Coghlan's contribution helped Toronto notch a 6-5, 11-inning win over the St. Louis Cardinals, giving the Blue Jays a chance to achieve their first series win of the year Wednesday night if they can take the middle game of the three-game interleague set in Busch Stadium. Injuries have affected the Blue Jays heavily in the early going. Toronto (6-14) is currently playing without its left side of the infield, as third baseman Josh Donaldson and shortstop Troy Tulowitzki are both on the 10-day disabled list. The Jays also are toiling without starting pitchers J.A. Happ and Aaron Sanchez. Yet Gibbons appreciates the effort his players are bringing every day. Ten of the team's 20 games have been decided by a run, and Tuesday was just the Jays' third win in those close encounters. "We've made a run at it every night, even though we haven't won many," Gibbons said. "The boys have a lot of character. This was a big win for us." And an equally difficult loss for St. Louis, which won six of its previous seven games. But the team's weakness since the season's beginning -- poor defense -- showed up in a big way. The Cardinals (9-11) committed a season-high four errors, all contributing to runs. Stephen Piscotty's fourth-inning throwing error from right field was a tough one, as he had Ezequiel Carrera nailed before his strike bonked Carrera in the helmet and bounced out of play. Third baseman Jedd Gyorko bobbled a grounder from Carrera in the seventh as Kevin Pillar scored. In the ninth, reliever Brett Cecil's wild pickoff throw to first moved Pillar to third, and Jose Bautista cashed him in with a one-out single. And in the 11th, shortstop Aledmys Diaz canceled out a fine tumbling stop on Steve Pearce's hot grounder by flinging a throw wide of first for the miscue that scored the winning run. The Cardinals have committed 19 errors so far, tying them with the Pittsburgh Pirates for the most in the majors. St. Louis' .973 fielding percentage is the worst in the majors. "That's something that really stands out," St. Louis manager Mike Matheny said of the volume of errors. "Missed plays, we've got to get better. Work and have a high expectation of what the results should look like. We still have a long way to go." The Cardinals will try to square up the series behind right-hander Carlos Martinez (0-3, 4.76 ERA), who has lost three consecutive starts since throwing 7 1/3 scoreless innings on Opening Night against the Chicago Cubs. Martinez has pitched just once against Toronto, retiring the only two hitters he faced in relief during a June 2014 matchup. Veteran right-hander Mat Latos (0-0, 7.20) gets the call for the Blue Jays, coming off a no-decision Friday night at the Los Angeles Angels. Latos has faced St. Louis 13 times in his career, and the results haven't always been pretty: 5-6 with a 5.76 ERA. |
