Who's gone? OF Seth Smith, SS Ketel Marte, C Chris Iannetta, OF Nori Aoki, RHP Taijuan Walker, RHP Nathan Karns, LHP Vidal Nuno, LHP David Rollins, RHP Tom Wilhelmsen
Projected lineup: LF Jarrod Dyson (.278, 1 HR, 25 RBI, 30 SB with Royals), SS Jean Segura (.319, 20, 64, 33 with Diamondbacks), 2B Robinson Cano (.298, 39, 103), DH Nelson Cruz (.287, 43, 105), 3B Kyle Seager (.278, 30, 99), C Mike Zunino (.207, 12, 31), 1B Danny Valencia (.287, 17, 51 with A's), RF Mitch Haniger (.229, 5, 17 in 34 games with Diamondbacks), CF Leonys Martin (.247, 15, 47, 24 SB)
Rotation: RH Felix Hernandez (11-8, 3.82), RH Hisashi Iwakuma (16-12, 4.12), LH James Paxton (6-7, 3.79), RH Yovani Gallardo (6-8, 5.42 with Orioles), LH Drew Smyly (7-12, 4.88 with Rays)
Key relievers: RH Steve Cishek (4-6, 2.81, 25/32 SV), RH Edwin Diaz (0-4, 2.79, 18/21), RH Nick Vincent (4-4, 3.73), RH Evan Scribner (0-0, 0.00 in 12 games), LH Marc Rzepczynski (1-0, 2.64 with A's and Nationals), RH Casey Fien (1-1, 5.49 with Twins and Dodgers)
Hot spots: First base and right field. Veteran Valencia has the first baseman's job for now, but Dan Vogelbach is the heir apparent who will begin the season at Triple-A. Vogelbach, 24, slimmed down this offseason ' a necessity when you're 6 feet tall, weigh 250 pounds and expect to play your first full major league season ' and might have more weight to lose. Valencia, 32, has never been a full-time first baseman in seven seasons. Haniger is known more for his glove than his bat, but he struggled (.713 OPS) in limited time at a hitter-friendly park in Arizona last year. Safeco Field won't be as kind. Cruz will play right field if Haniger doesn't.
Outlook: General Manager Jerry Dipoto has paired a staff of fly-ball pitchers with three rangy outfielders, an exercise in team-building he once tried with the Angels. Dipoto caused a stir by executing 40 roster transactions during the offseason, but is it possible he didn't do enough? Haniger has never been atop a major league depth chart. Pitchers Gallardo and Smyly are coming off shaky seasons in Baltimore and Tampa Bay, respectively. On paper, the Mariners look like a top-heavy team without much help in the minors if the bottom falls out. That was the case for Dipoto with the Angels too, and sometimes it worked out OK. More often it didn't. | | OAKLAND: 2016: 69-93, fifth place
Manager: Bob Melvin (seventh season)
Who's new? CF Rajai Davis, OF Matt Joyce, 3B Trevor Plouffe, IF Adam Rosales, RHP Santiago Casilla
Who's gone? IF/OF Danny Valencia, OF Brett Eibner, 2B Eric Sogard, 2B Tyler Ladendorf, LHP Dillon Overton, RHP Fernando Rodriguez
Projected lineup: CF Rajai Davis (.249, 12 HR, 48 RBI, 43 SB with Indians), C Stephen Vogt (.251, 14, 56), DH Ryon Healy (.305, 13, 37 in 72 games), LF Khris Davis (.247, 42, 102), RF Matt Joyce (.242, 13, 42 with Pirates) or Mark Canha (.122, 3, 6 in 16 games), SS Marcus Semien (.238, 27, 75, 10 SB), 3B Trevor Plouffe (.260, 12, 47 with Twins), 1B Yonder Alonso (.253, 7, 56), 2B Jed Lowrie (.263, 2, 27 in 87 games)
Rotation: RH Kendall Graveman (10-11, 4.11), LH Sean Manaea (7-9, 3.86), RH Jharel Cotton (2-0, 2.15 in five games), RH Andrew Triggs (1-1, 4.31), RH Jesse Hahn (2-4, 6.02 in nine games) and Frankie Montas (0-0, 2.38 in four games at Triple-A)
Key relievers: RH Ryan Madson (6-7, 3.62, 30/37 SV), LH Sean Doolittle (2-3, 3.23), RH Santiago Casilla (2-5, 3.57 with Giants), RH Ryan Dull (5-5, 2.42), RH John Axford (6-4, 3.97), RH Liam Hendriks (0-4, 3.76), LH Daniel Coulombe (3-1, 4.53)
Hot spots: Fifth Starter and Second Base. Triggs, Hahn and Montas are the top candidates to fill out the rotation. Montas, who turns 24 before the season, is the youngest and has the highest ceiling. Hahn is the only one with something resembling a track record of success in the majors. Triggs showed potential in five starts last year. Second base will belong to prospect Franklin Barreto at some point. For now the position belongs to Lowrie, who figures to become trade bait as the A's begin their annual migration toward mathematical elimination.
Outlook: It's been a long two years since the A's played postseason baseball. Rather than rebuilding outright, the A's spent their offseason stocking up on veteran position players. Their strength is a young rotation led by right-hander Sonny Gray ' another trade candidate who's coming off the worst of his four major league seasons (5-11, 5.69 ERA) and will miss time with a lat strain. If Cotton, Manaea and Triggs pick up where they left off, pitching won't be the problem. No team scored fewer runs than the A's in 2016, and it still isn't obvious that their lineup improved. Their home turf will be renamed in honor of Rickey Henderson when the Angels visit Oakland for the opener; maybe Rickey can hit leadoff, too. |
| | A's go for sixth straight win versus Mariners
OAKLAND, Calif. -- One pitcher who has been historically good and another who has been continually bad are set to duel Sunday when the Seattle Mariners and Oakland Athletics complete a four-game series. A's right-hander Andrew Triggs (3-0) will be seeking to extend a streak of 17 2/3 innings without allowing an earned run to open the season when he makes his fourth start. He'll be opposed by Mariners righty Yovani Gallardo (0-1), who not only has yet to win at the Oakland Coliseum, but has never beaten the A's anywhere in six career starts. The A's will be looking for four-game sweep of the Mariners in the series finale, having won the first three games 9-6, 3-1 and 4-3. Triggs will take the mound Sunday as the only major-leaguer to have started three games this season without allowing an earned run. His 17 2/3-inning run is the longest in A's franchise history. The Mariners hammered Triggs for five runs and six hits in two innings of relief in Seattle last May. But the Mariners haven't been nearly as potent on the road as at home this season. Their 1-9 road record is mostly a product of scoring just 3.2 runs per game, as opposed to having averaged 5.2 in their home contests. "We're not a team that's supposed to lose that many games," insisted Mariners second baseman Robinson Cano, who belted his 34th career road home run in Saturday's loss. "I mean, you can lose, but we should be playing better on the road. We just have to keep fighting. We can't hang our head and wait to see what happens." Triggs will be pitching for the second time on the A's week-long homestand. He outdueled Yu Darvish of the Texas Rangers 4-2 Tuesday night, allowing just three hits and two unearned runs in six innings. The A's haven't lost since, stringing together their first five-game winning streak since last June. "Pretty amazing," A's manager Bob Melvin gushed of Triggs after Tuesday's game. "To do what he's done to this point, I'm not going to say it's a surprise, but it's definitely welcome." The Mariners would welcome a better start from Gallardo, who has allowed at least three runs in no more than six innings in all three of his starts since being acquired from Baltimore for Seth Smith in January. If the veteran is going to turn things around, it's going to have to come in a stadium at which he has never had any success in his career, going 0-2 with a 3.71 ERA in three starts. The 31-year-old has won games at 26 different major-league ballparks in his 11-year career. And Gallardo has beaten every major-league team except four in his career. He hopes to erase the A's from a list that also includes the Rangers, Los Angeles Angels and Colorado Rockies after having gone 0-5 with a 5.29 ERA in six career starts vs. Oakland. The Mariners have been outscored 20-6 in Gallardo's three starts this season, including 5-0 at home on Tuesday night when he gave up four runs and nine hits in six innings against Miami. |
