| |  | TEXAS: When Yu Darvish pitched only one inning this spring before season-ending elbow surgery, the Texas Rangers were already off to an ominous start.
The Rangers lost their ace even before what they are still hoping will be a comeback season.
''There is no way to spin that, other than it's a tough deal for us. He's one of the best pitchers in the game,'' general manager Jon Daniels said this spring. ''That being said, it's one guy. It's not 17. Good teams and good organizations have had similar news at similar times before and found a way. That's got to be our mentality.''
Texas had 22 different players spend time on the disabled list last season, including Darvish missing the final seven weeks with elbow inflammation before needing Tommy John ligament-replacement surgery this spring.
The aching result for the Rangers was the American League's worst record (67-95) and their most losses since 1985, ending an impressive four-year run of 90-win seasons with their only two World Series appearances (2010-11).
Darvish was 10-7 and an All-Star again before getting sidelined last season.
As for the top of the rotation without him, the January trade to get local pitcher Yovani Gallardo proved even more important. Gallardo, who can be a free agent after this season, started the last five season openers for Milwaukee.
Derek Holland, who didn't pitch until September last season after knee surgery, had a strong finish. Shoulder soreness slowed the left-hander this spring, but that likely set him up to start the home opener April 10 against Houston, in the fifth game of the season.
Also among the injured in 2014 were slugger Prince Fielder and Shin-Soo Choo, the big offensive additions before last season.
Fielder had missed only one game the previous five seasons with Detroit and Milwaukee before being limited to only 42 games and three home runs in his Rangers debut because a herniated disk in his neck that required surgery. Choo played 123 games, but his on-base percentage dipped from .423 in 2013 for Cincinnati to .340 before operations late last season for a bone spur in his left elbow and torn cartilage in his left ankle.
''There's no telling what this ballclub can do,'' new manager Jeff Banister said. ''They've yet to have an opportunity to play together. Let's hope they get a really strong shot of playing together for 162-plus (games).''
Here are a few things to know about the Rangers, who open the season April 6 at Oakland:
CLOSING TIME: Neftali Feliz is back in his World Series role for the Rangers as their closer after an ill-fated and injury-plagued attempt to be a starter. The right-hander was 3-1 with a 3.16 ERA in eight games (seven starts) in 2012 before Tommy John surgery. Feliz was 2-1 with 13 saves in 14 chances with a 1.99 ERA in 30 relief appearances after rejoining the Rangers last July, just before Joakim Soria was traded.
BELTRE'S IMPACT: Third baseman Adrian Beltre is going into his 17th major league season, his fifth with the Rangers and signed through next season. ''He's the heart and soul of this club,'' Banister said. ''A shining light in the storm, that's what he was last year. ... Do yourself a favor and watch that last at-bat he put together in 2014.'' Determined not to be the final out of the season, Beltre went from an 0-2 count to getting a single on the third straight slider thrown after that.
LEFT OF CENTER: With pretty much every other defensive position set, Jake Smolinski and Ryan Ruo entered spring as candidates in left field. Both showed promising glimpses in short stints in their major league debuts the second half of last season. Ryan Ludwick, who made his major league debut with Texas in 2002 and played for five other teams the past decade, was a non-roster invitee who could play left. Michael Choice, who got 35 of his 55 outfield starts in left last year, was the early man out when optioned to the minors in mid-March. Choo moves from left to right after Alex Rios departed in free agency.
MISSING WORK: The 26 different DL stints for the Rangers last season amounted to 2,281 days lost. That was 833 more than Arizona, who had the second most, and more than double any other American League team. | | SAN DIEGO: San Diego Padres manager Bud Black turned the corner to meet the press on the first day of spring training and was taken aback at the throng of reporters waiting.
''What are we, the Yankees?'' Black asked.
No, but they're no longer the anonymous Padres, the light-hitting, star-less team planted near the bottom of the NL West.
Thanks to first-year general manager A.J. Preller's wild offseason, the Padres have been remade. There's suddenly star power. And expectations, too.
''The organization, from top on down, there's a different vibe,'' Black said.
A new ace in James Shields joins an already strong rotation. Matt Kemp, Justin Upton and Wil Myers make for a brand new power-hitting outfield. Derek Norris is now catching. Newcomers Yangervis Solarte and Will Middlebrooks have had great springs as they compete at third base.
''I'm impressed,'' Kemp said. ''We've got a lot of great players in this clubhouse. We have a really good chance of winning some games.''
It's been a long time since people have been saying that about the Padres. They were last in the postseason in 2006. They haven't had a winning season since 2010 and last year finished 18 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West.
A lost season included a shake-up at the top. Preller, a former assistant GM with Texas, replaced the fired Josh Byrnes in August. Preller was then the clear star of baseball's hot stove season.
Kemp, who acknowledged he was shocked the Dodgers traded him, thinks the Padres now have the best outfield in the game.
Shields, who helped get Kansas City to the World Series last season, was the last piece. He signed in February.
''Shields wanted to be here. Kemp, Upton, Norris, those guys are happy to be here,'' Black said. ''They're happy to be in San Diego. They're happy to be a Padre. That's a good thing.''
Now it will be up to Black, lauded for squeezing as much as he can out of bad rosters, to make them winners. The Padres expect to contend for at least a wild card spot.
''I've been in San Diego for 40 years. That energy is back,'' Padres executive chairman Ron Fowler said. ''People are talking baseball and it's fun to be a Padre right now.''
ROTATION WORKHORSES: Adding Shields gives the Padres baseball's most durable pitcher on a staff already known for eating innings. The right-hander has tossed 1,785 2/3 innings since 2007. No pitcher has thrown more. Tyson Ross (195 2/3) and Ian Kennedy (201) were workhorses in 2014. Right-hander Andrew Cashner was the exception, but last year's opening-day starter has looked dominant as he returns from arm issues. Brandon Morrow and Odrisamer Despaigne are contending for the fifth spot. And Josh Johnson, coming back from elbow surgery, could be ready by June. ''The one thing we do have is pitching depth,'' Shields said. ''And you can never have too much.'' The one issue: no left-handers.
CAN THEY FIELD?: The new outfield packs power, but can they cover spacious Petco Park? Kemp's arthritic hips were made public during trade discussions and he no longer has the speed for center. Myers has only played there in the minors. ''They read the noise that we're not going to play defense,'' Black said. ''Players have a lot of pride.'' Veteran Wil Nieves, a non-roster invite, is the likely backup catcher with Tim Federowicz sidelined following knee surgery.
WHO PLAYS THIRD?: Solarte, acquired last summer from the Yankees, has impressed at the plate and can also play second and first. Middlebrooks, coming off a poor, injury-plagued 2014 in Boston, has hit well and looked smooth in the field. ''I'm not too worried about it. I know I'm a good player,'' Middlebrooks said. ''He's a good player as well. We're both going to be on the field at some point.''
WHAT HAPPENS TO QUENTIN?: Preller's next task is to figure out what to do with all his spare outfielders. That includes Carlos Quentin, the oft-injured two-time All-Star. ''Everyone knows there's a DH in the American League,'' said Quentin, who is open to a trade. Will Venable and Cameron Maybin also face uncertain futures.
PRESSURE ON BLACK: Black found a way to win 77 games last year with a roster that scored 535 runs, 38 fewer than any other team. But Preller declined to extend his contract in the offseason. ''We're both in the last year before we're free agents,'' Kennedy said, grinning. |

Yovani Gallardo's ninth major league season could turn out to be his best, and the playoff-hopeful Texas Rangers are pleased that its coming in his first year with the club.
He'll look to win a fourth straight start and help visiting Texas avoid dropping a fourth straight meeting with the San Diego Padres on Tuesday night.
Gallardo (11-9, 3.14 ERA) pitched parts of eight seasons with Milwaukee before being acquired in a trade in January, and his addition has helped the Rangers (68-62) surge into the AL's second wild-card spot.
The right-hander improved to 3-0 with a 1.21 ERA over his last four starts after pitching his third scoreless outing of that stretch in Thursday's 4-1 win over Toronto.
Gallardo, who hasn't finished a full season with a better ERA than his 3.51 mark last year, overcame three walks to pick up his 100th career victory.
"It just shows a lot of the hard work through the year," said Gallardo, whose streak of 14 2-3 scoreless innings is the longest active run in the majors for a starter. "It's definitely exciting. Hopefully I'm ready to go on and reach the next goal."
The Rangers have won six of Gallardo's last seven starts but couldn't provide enough support when he allowed one run in 5 2-3 innings of a 2-1 loss to the Padres on July 12.
Gallardo is 0-1 with a 0.96 ERA in his last three against San Diego. Much like his last start against the Padres, the Rangers couldn't solve Tyson Ross on Monday in a 7-0 loss that snapped a four-game winning streak.
The defeat also trimmed their lead for the AL's last playoff spot to one game over Minnesota. Rougned Odor went 0 for 4 in his return after missing the last five with an injured finger.
The Rangers have lost the last three meetings with the Padres (64-67), who have won two straight after dropping five of their previous six. Yonder Alonso and Cory Spangenberg finished with two hits and an RBI apiece as San Diego won for the sixth time in seven tries at home, a stretch during which it has outscored opponents 44-18.
"They're playing great baseball, they've got a good lineup and we've got a long homestand, so it's a nice way to start off in the first game of 11 at home," Ross said.
Andrew Cashner (5-13, 4.05) has gone 3-1 with a 2.05 ERA over his last four home starts and gets the ball for his first career outing against the Rangers. He's coming off a 4-2 loss at Washington on Thursday after allowing three runs and nine hits while issuing three walks in 5 2-3 innings.
The right-hander received one run of support for the fourth time in six starts, and his 3.22 run-support average is the fifth-lowest in the majors.
It's unclear who Cashner will face in this contest after Texas recalled rookie Joey Gallo, but Josh Hamilton isn't expected to be in the lineup. Hamilton will be activated from the disabled list before the game after missing the last 15 with a sore left knee.
"We'll take what we can get from him," general manager Jon Daniels told MLB's official website. "For much of September, that could be as a pinch-hitter."
