| |  | ST LOUIS: ST. LOUIS (AP) - The Cardinals hope Michael Wacha is ready to stand alongside ace Adam Wainwright at the top of their rotation.
Wacha was the NL Championship Series MVP as a rookie but just 5-6 with a 3.20 ERA in 19 starts last year. He was sidelined for most of the season's second half by a stress reaction in his shoulder, and was rusty in October before giving up Travis Ishikawa's series-winning homer in Game 5 of the NLCS.
Now he feels healthy.
''It's very encouraging, the long term of what this kid could be and the short term of how he feels, somebody every fifth day that can bring the kind of stuff he does,'' St. Louis manager Mike Matheny said. ''He feels good about himself and we feel good about what we're seeing.''
The 23-year-old Wacha has long insisted the injury is behind him.
''Ever since I came back last year, I haven't thought about it when I was on the mound,'' Wacha said. ''As far as I know, it was a rare injury. I'm not sure where it came from.''
If it stays away, the Cardinals figure to again have one of the deeper starting staffs despite trading 15-game winner Shelby Miller for outfielder Jason Heyward. Wainwright was a 20-game winner for the second time, and Lance Lynn has averaged 16 wins during three years in the rotation.
John Lackey is a proven late-season talent. Jaime Garcia's resurgent spring following surgery to relieve nerve compression may cause promising Carlos Martinez to be related to the bullpen again.
Lackey expects to be more comfortable in his first full NL season, saying ''It's different for a lot of reasons.''
Things to watch for with the Cardinals, who open April 5 at Chicago:
LEFT-HANDED HEAVY
There are five lefty bats in the lineup, a potential downside. But there also figures to be more power on the bench. Mark Reynolds, who has hit 20 or more homers each of the last seven seasons, was signed as a free agent. He could factor in as a semi-regular, especially at first base, where Matt Adams has struggled against lefties.
HEYWARD TIME
Only 25, Heyward is a potential future core member of the franchise. His is eligible for free agency after the World Series, and the wooing began not long after the trade with Atlanta - which also brought set-up man Jordan Walden.
''He fits in very well with how our guys work, how seriously they take the game,'' Matheny said. ''He's mixed in very well to this point.''
IMPROVED POP
St. Louis hit just 105 homers last season, second-fewest in the majors. They Cardianls are anticipating more out of right field from Heyward, who had a career-low 11 last year while forced into the leadoff spot with Atlanta. Jhonny Peralta followed his drug suspension with a 21 homers, a franchise record among shortstops, and the smooth-swinging Adams is capable of hitting a lot more than 15.
HEALTHY CHOICES
A full return by Garcia would be an unexpected bonus after two injury-filled seasons. Wainwright and Lynn are recovering from health setbacks early in spring training. Center fielder Jon Jay made a delayed exhibition debut following wrist surgery. ''I said the whole goal was to be ready April 5,'' Jay said.
MORE SPEED
Along with increasing the power profile, there will be an emphasis on manufacturing runs. The Cardinals stole 57 bases last year, third-fewest in the major leagues, but are primed for at least a little more thievery with both Wong and Heyward capable of swiping 20-plus.
''I want to see bigger leads. I want to see more aggressive chances with balls in the dirt,'' Matheny said. ''I want to see us take a first-and-second double steal because we have the kind of players to do that.'' | | SAN FRANCISCO: SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - The San Francisco Giants lost Pablo Sandoval to big money and the Boston Red Sox. They missed out paying big money to left-hander Jon Lester, who instead signed with the Chicago Cubs.
While the reigning World Series champions are ready to shed that every-other-year title trend, plenty of people wonder whether general manager Brian Sabean and his staff did enough during the offseason to stay near the top in the talented NL West.
Ask manager Bruce Bochy and his players, and they consider the additions of healthy right-hander Matt Cain and center fielder Angel Pagan back into the mix as a big deal right up there with signing a prized free agent.
And, of course, they have World Series MVP Madison Bumgarner ready to build off his remarkable postseason.
As he addressed the team at the start of spring training, Bochy reminded the Giants that it's hard to win consistently year after year.
''We had a great year last year,'' Bochy said. ''We have to go about our business and get ready for a new year. We'll still enjoy and savor those memories but at the same time it's time for us to get ready. ... Your lock on success is as good as that last game, so we've got to get after it.''
Durable right fielder Hunter Pence is sidelined with a broken left forearm that could keep him out until early May, while left fielder Nori Aoki will join the team he lost to in last year's Fall Classic while with the Kansas City Royals.
Casey McGehee, traded to San Francisco from the Marlins, will take over at third base with Sandoval's departure on a $95 million, five-year contract to Boston. He has said he won't try to replace the formerly popular Kung Fu Panda.
''I feel like we get a lot of flak for not doing anything this offseason,'' shortstop Brandon Crawford said. ''We got Aoki, we got McGehee. We have Cain coming back healthy that I think a lot of people forget. We've got Pagan coming back healthy. It's almost like getting four new guys.''
Bochy joked to Aoki - whom he calls ''a catalyst'' - about hitting 30 home runs. The speedy Japanese outfielder responded, ''24.''
''We're playing for a championship,'' Aoki said. ''It's a passionate group of guys.''
Here are some things to look for with the Giants, who have captured three World Series titles in the past five years:
BUMGARNER'S NEXT STEP: Bumgarner threw 270 innings, including 21 with two wins and a save in the World Series.
He went 4-1 during the postseason following an 18-10 regular season. From his four-hit, 10-strikeout gem that got things started in an 8-0 wild-card win at Pittsburgh all the way through his brilliant relief outing in Game 7 of the World Series to beat the Royals, Bumgarner became one of the postseason's best pitchers ever.
''I think he'll be comfortable in his skin,'' pitching coach Dave Righetti said.
HUDSON'S HURRAH: This is it for Tim Hudson, who has said he will retire after his 17th major league season.
He won his first championship last year, advancing out of the first round for the first time.
Now, the 39-year-old pitcher is bouncing back from surgery to remove bone spurs from his right ankle, the same one he injured during the 2013 season with Atlanta that sidelined him for the final two months.
PAGAN'S BALKY BACK: Pagan arrived at spring training declaring himself pain-free for the first time in years following back surgery.
Despite some flare-ups, Pagan and the Giants are counting on a full season. He joked to Bochy that he's ready to play 160 games.
Pagan played in only 96 last season and 71 in 2013 because of injuries.
''It's a new slate for everybody, including him,'' Bochy said.
RELIABLE BULLPEN: San Francisco's bullpen is lined up again - Jeremy Affeldt, Javier Lopez, Sergio Romo and Santiago Casilla. Each of these pitchers has been part of all three title teams.
Casilla became closer after Romo struggled in June, though Bochy knows he can mix and match with these guys. Then, there's Yusmeiro Petit, who showed he can start or relieve with equal efficiency.
''You want to remind them to take advantage of what you have,'' Bochy said. ''We've got a great group here and we don't ever want to lose out on this opportunity.'' |

Red hot at home, the San Francisco Giants are getting unexpected production from rookie Kelby Tomlinson.
After coming through in the clutch, Tomlinson looks to continue his offensive surge as the Giants face the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday.
San Francisco (69-59) has won 16 of 19 at AT&T Park, a big reason why they're 2 1/2 games back of NL West-leading Los Angeles.
Tomlinson is another.
The second baseman is batting .364 with 12 RBIs in 21 games since being called up from Triple-A Sacramento. He's started 14 of those contests at second base in place of Joe Panik, who's on the disabled list with a back injury.
"He just seems comfortable here," manager Bruce Bochy said. "He's hit everywhere he's gone, Double-A, Triple-A and he's continuing to do that."
Tomlinson wasn't fazed in a big spot Friday, delivering a walkoff single in a 5-4 win over St. Louis (82-46). That came a day after he hit a grand slam for his first career home run in a 9-1 win over the Chicago Cubs.
Marlon Byrd has also homered in the last two games, hitting a grand slam of his own Friday to give San Francisco a franchise-record eight on the season.
"This one's a lot bigger," Byrd said. "It's a pennant race and the Dodgers already won. We needed this win tonight to stay on pace."
Ryan Vogelsong (9-9, 4.05 ERA) starts against the Cardinals for the second time in less than two weeks. The right-hander held them to two hits in six innings of a 2-0 win at St. Louis on Aug. 18.
Control issues, however, led to one of his shortest outings of the season Sunday. Vogelsong threw 77 pitches in 3 1-3 innings, giving up three runs and seven hits with four walks in a 5-2 loss at Pittsburgh.
He's 3-2 with a 2.88 ERA in 11 home games - eight starts. However, Vogelsong has gone 0-2 with a 6.46 ERA in his last three home starts against the Cardinals, including playoffs.
St. Louis has a hot-hitting rookie of its own in Stephen Piscotty, who's batting .322 with 22 RBIs in 34 games since being called up from Triple-A Memphis. He's 6 for 16 with three extra-base hits and as many RBIs in four games against the Giants after hitting a two-run double and a single Friday.
The Cardinals, who lead the NL Central by 3 1/2 games over Pittsburgh, are turning to Lance Lynn (10-8, 2.94). The right-hander has gone 2-0 with a 2.00 ERA and 18 strikeouts in 18 innings over his last three road starts.
Lynn battled through six innings Monday, yielding two runs and nine hits while inducing a career-best four double plays - two with the bases loaded.
"He made great pitches in tough situations," manager Mike Matheny said. "He had that extra movement when he needed it."
Lynn is 0-5 with a 5.50 ERA in seven career starts against the Giants, including postseason.
