KEY GAME INFORMATION
SAN FRANCISCO: SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - The San Francisco Giants lost Pablo Sandoval to big money and the Boston Red Sox. They missed out paying big money to left-hander Jon Lester, who instead signed with the Chicago Cubs.
While the reigning World Series champions are ready to shed that every-other-year title trend, plenty of people wonder whether general manager Brian Sabean and his staff did enough during the offseason to stay near the top in the talented NL West.
Ask manager Bruce Bochy and his players, and they consider the additions of healthy right-hander Matt Cain and center fielder Angel Pagan back into the mix as a big deal right up there with signing a prized free agent.
And, of course, they have World Series MVP Madison Bumgarner ready to build off his remarkable postseason.
As he addressed the team at the start of spring training, Bochy reminded the Giants that it's hard to win consistently year after year.
''We had a great year last year,'' Bochy said. ''We have to go about our business and get ready for a new year. We'll still enjoy and savor those memories but at the same time it's time for us to get ready. ... Your lock on success is as good as that last game, so we've got to get after it.''
Durable right fielder Hunter Pence is sidelined with a broken left forearm that could keep him out until early May, while left fielder Nori Aoki will join the team he lost to in last year's Fall Classic while with the Kansas City Royals.
Casey McGehee, traded to San Francisco from the Marlins, will take over at third base with Sandoval's departure on a $95 million, five-year contract to Boston. He has said he won't try to replace the formerly popular Kung Fu Panda.
''I feel like we get a lot of flak for not doing anything this offseason,'' shortstop Brandon Crawford said. ''We got Aoki, we got McGehee. We have Cain coming back healthy that I think a lot of people forget. We've got Pagan coming back healthy. It's almost like getting four new guys.''
Bochy joked to Aoki - whom he calls ''a catalyst'' - about hitting 30 home runs. The speedy Japanese outfielder responded, ''24.''
''We're playing for a championship,'' Aoki said. ''It's a passionate group of guys.''
Here are some things to look for with the Giants, who have captured three World Series titles in the past five years:
BUMGARNER'S NEXT STEP: Bumgarner threw 270 innings, including 21 with two wins and a save in the World Series.
He went 4-1 during the postseason following an 18-10 regular season. From his four-hit, 10-strikeout gem that got things started in an 8-0 wild-card win at Pittsburgh all the way through his brilliant relief outing in Game 7 of the World Series to beat the Royals, Bumgarner became one of the postseason's best pitchers ever.
''I think he'll be comfortable in his skin,'' pitching coach Dave Righetti said.
HUDSON'S HURRAH: This is it for Tim Hudson, who has said he will retire after his 17th major league season.
He won his first championship last year, advancing out of the first round for the first time.
Now, the 39-year-old pitcher is bouncing back from surgery to remove bone spurs from his right ankle, the same one he injured during the 2013 season with Atlanta that sidelined him for the final two months.
PAGAN'S BALKY BACK: Pagan arrived at spring training declaring himself pain-free for the first time in years following back surgery.
Despite some flare-ups, Pagan and the Giants are counting on a full season. He joked to Bochy that he's ready to play 160 games.
Pagan played in only 96 last season and 71 in 2013 because of injuries.
''It's a new slate for everybody, including him,'' Bochy said.
RELIABLE BULLPEN: San Francisco's bullpen is lined up again - Jeremy Affeldt, Javier Lopez, Sergio Romo and Santiago Casilla. Each of these pitchers has been part of all three title teams.
Casilla became closer after Romo struggled in June, though Bochy knows he can mix and match with these guys. Then, there's Yusmeiro Petit, who showed he can start or relieve with equal efficiency.
''You want to remind them to take advantage of what you have,'' Bochy said. ''We've got a great group here and we don't ever want to lose out on this opportunity.''
TEXAS: When Yu Darvish pitched only one inning this spring before season-ending elbow surgery, the Texas Rangers were already off to an ominous start.
The Rangers lost their ace even before what they are still hoping will be a comeback season.
''There is no way to spin that, other than it's a tough deal for us. He's one of the best pitchers in the game,'' general manager Jon Daniels said this spring. ''That being said, it's one guy. It's not 17. Good teams and good organizations have had similar news at similar times before and found a way. That's got to be our mentality.''
Texas had 22 different players spend time on the disabled list last season, including Darvish missing the final seven weeks with elbow inflammation before needing Tommy John ligament-replacement surgery this spring.
The aching result for the Rangers was the American League's worst record (67-95) and their most losses since 1985, ending an impressive four-year run of 90-win seasons with their only two World Series appearances (2010-11).
Darvish was 10-7 and an All-Star again before getting sidelined last season.
As for the top of the rotation without him, the January trade to get local pitcher Yovani Gallardo proved even more important. Gallardo, who can be a free agent after this season, started the last five season openers for Milwaukee.
Derek Holland, who didn't pitch until September last season after knee surgery, had a strong finish. Shoulder soreness slowed the left-hander this spring, but that likely set him up to start the home opener April 10 against Houston, in the fifth game of the season.
Also among the injured in 2014 were slugger Prince Fielder and Shin-Soo Choo, the big offensive additions before last season.
Fielder had missed only one game the previous five seasons with Detroit and Milwaukee before being limited to only 42 games and three home runs in his Rangers debut because a herniated disk in his neck that required surgery. Choo played 123 games, but his on-base percentage dipped from .423 in 2013 for Cincinnati to .340 before operations late last season for a bone spur in his left elbow and torn cartilage in his left ankle.
''There's no telling what this ballclub can do,'' new manager Jeff Banister said. ''They've yet to have an opportunity to play together. Let's hope they get a really strong shot of playing together for 162-plus (games).''
Here are a few things to know about the Rangers, who open the season April 6 at Oakland:
CLOSING TIME: Neftali Feliz is back in his World Series role for the Rangers as their closer after an ill-fated and injury-plagued attempt to be a starter. The right-hander was 3-1 with a 3.16 ERA in eight games (seven starts) in 2012 before Tommy John surgery. Feliz was 2-1 with 13 saves in 14 chances with a 1.99 ERA in 30 relief appearances after rejoining the Rangers last July, just before Joakim Soria was traded.
BELTRE'S IMPACT: Third baseman Adrian Beltre is going into his 17th major league season, his fifth with the Rangers and signed through next season. ''He's the heart and soul of this club,'' Banister said. ''A shining light in the storm, that's what he was last year. ... Do yourself a favor and watch that last at-bat he put together in 2014.'' Determined not to be the final out of the season, Beltre went from an 0-2 count to getting a single on the third straight slider thrown after that.
LEFT OF CENTER: With pretty much every other defensive position set, Jake Smolinski and Ryan Ruo entered spring as candidates in left field. Both showed promising glimpses in short stints in their major league debuts the second half of last season. Ryan Ludwick, who made his major league debut with Texas in 2002 and played for five other teams the past decade, was a non-roster invitee who could play left. Michael Choice, who got 35 of his 55 outfield starts in left last year, was the early man out when optioned to the minors in mid-March. Choo moves from left to right after Alex Rios departed in free agency.
MISSING WORK: The 26 different DL stints for the Rangers last season amounted to 2,281 days lost. That was 833 more than Arizona, who had the second most, and more than double any other American League team.

*Giants-Rangers Preview* ========================

By NICOLINO DIBENEDETTO STATS Writer

San Francisco (57-46) at Texas (50-53), 3:05 p.m. EDT

Manager Bruce Bochy was quite familiar with Mike Leake long before the San Francisco Giants acquired him prior to the trade deadline.

He'll get a closer look at the right-hander Sunday when he makes his Giants debut in the finale of a three-game set with the Texas Rangers.

As a preteen, Leake played on a travel team out of San Diego that included Bochy's son Brett and Washington right-hander Stephen Strasburg.

"He was a good athlete then. He could pitch and played short. It was a really good club. Mike, he stood out," Bochy said. "He was the best player on the field, whether it was pitching, playing short, swinging the bat. He was their best player."

Bochy is just looking for Leake (9-5, 3.56 ERA) to excel on the mound after San Francisco (57-46) acquired him Thursday from Cincinnati for two prospects.

"He's a quality starter who's going to help us," Bochy said. "He's excited about being here. He's been throwing the ball well, good athlete. That's a great move for us to give us some depth in the rotation."

Leake, in the rotation in place of the injured Tim Hudson (shoulder), has allowed two runs and 15 hits in 30 innings while winning four straight starts, completing the eighth in three. He did that while limiting NL-leading St. Louis to four hits in Tuesday's 4-0 road win.

Leake, who spent his first five-plus seasons with the Reds, is 0-2 with a 9.60 ERA in his last three starts in AL parks. He gave up four runs - one earned - in seven innings on the road in his only career start against the Rangers in June 2013.

The Giants have won 14 of their past 17 contests to move 1 1/2 games back of NL West-leading Los Angeles.

They bounced back from Friday's 6-3 loss in the series opener by spoiling Cole Hamels' Rangers debut with a 9-7, 11-inning victory Saturday.

Hunter Pence hit the go-ahead homer to lead off the 11th after tying the game with an RBI single in a three-run eighth. He's hitting .324 with five homers and 16 RBIs in 17 road games during this injury-plagued season.

Buster Posey is on a tear with a .459 average and 12 RBIs in the last 15 games. The All-Star catcher came a triple short of the cycle Saturday, connecting for a solo homer and an RBI double. He's also put together a 13-game hitting streak on the road, batting .388 with four homers and 14 RBIs.

The Rangers (50-53), who had a three-game winning streak end Saturday, are giving Martin Perez (0-2, 10.50) a fourth chance at his first win since returning from Tommy John surgery.

The left-hander surrendered a career high-tying eight runs before getting an out in the second inning and being pulled in Tuesday's 21-5 loss to the New York Yankees.

This will be his first game against San Francisco.

Prince Fielder doubled on two of his three hits Saturday after batting .143 in his previous eight games. His .330 season average is second in the AL to Detroit's Miguel Cabrera (.350), who is on the disabled list with a calf strain.

Fielder is 2 for 8 with a homer against Leake, while Shin-soo Choo is 3 for 5 with two home runs and a double.

Choo is 6 for 14 with a homer and two doubles in his last four games.
