KEY GAME INFORMATION
OAKLAND: OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - The Oakland Athletics topped even their most trade-happy of days by making nine swaps involving 27 players in a wild offseason for Billy Beane and his front-office mates.
As far as Beane is concerned, the A's wouldn't have even had a chance to close the gap on the reigning AL West champion Los Angeles Angels without a major offseason overhaul.
Even if that meant shipping out a trio of All-Stars in third baseman Josh Donaldson, first baseman Brandon Moss and catcher Derek Norris.
''Our expectations don't change, not with the guys we brought in,'' manager Bob Melvin said. ''You look at it early on and you're thinking, `What are we doing here?' Then we see the last few moves ... and it all came together at the end as far as what this team would look like going into spring. ... We feel real good about this group.''
There were so many changes that Melvin had to search for names on the backs of jerseys during February's FanFest.
Billy Butler is the new designated hitter, and two-time All-Star infielder Ben Zobrist can play just about anywhere for Melvin, who is always one to mix and match his lineups based on matchups and who's playing well. Ike Davis came in a November trade from the Pirates to play first base, while third baseman Brett Lawrie came from the Blue Jays in the swap that sent Donaldson to Toronto.
''It's unique. I don't think many teams have taken turnover like this,'' reliever Dan Otero said. ''Who are we to judge? Everybody's here for a reason, so it's going to be great.''
Still, all the change took some getting used to this spring for an Oakland clubhouse known for its easygoing nature.
You first must know your teammates' names.
''Team chemistry's a little funky. You have to spend time with people and get to know people for team chemistry to fully come,'' center fielder Coco Crisp said. ''You can't expect it just to happen. We'll be fine. We have a good group of core guys, guys that talk and mingle.''
Here are some things to know as the A's chase a fourth straight playoff berth:
BUTLER'S BIG MOVE: Butler makes the first move of his career and is coming off a down season with the Royals, who lost in a seven-game World Series to San Francisco. He batted .271 with nine home runs and 66 RBIs in 151 games last year, 108 of those as a DH. ''Everybody's awesome to be around,'' Butler said. ''I couldn't be happier to get ready for another year with them. There are a lot of talented major league guys in this room.''
FILLING THE VOIDS: Lawrie batted .247 with 12 home runs and 38 RBIs in 70 games for Toronto last season and takes pride in his defense to back up a talented rotation led by Sonny Gray and Scott Kazmir. ''We have a lot of ability out there and that's a plus for the pitching staff,'' Lawrie said. ''All they have to do is take care of business.''
GRIFFIN AND PARKER: Both right-handers are recovering from elbow ligament reconstructive surgery that sidelined them all of 2014. Parker hopes to return shortly after the season begins, while June has long been the target goal for these two. ''There's no reason to start ripping the slider,'' Parker said. ''I'm going to focus on command.''
SPEEDY OUTFIELD: Despite the losses around the diamond, Melvin likes the look of his speedy outfield with Crisp, Sam Fuld and Craig Gentry. ''They can cover a lot of ground,'' Melvin said. ''In the case of Gentry and Fuld, they throw very well, too. Especially in our outfield at home, the field can play big and you need to cover a lot of ground out there. It's a comfort to have, and I know our pitchers feel good about it, too, that on a cold night in Oakland, you can stay. It's tough to go opposite field and know that when a ball's hit in the air and stays in the ballpark it's probably going to get caught.''
ZITO'S COMEBACK: Back in his original uniform two years removed from the end of a $126 million, seven-year contract with San Francisco, lefty Barry Zito looks to be a factor for the A's out of the bullpen - or even to start when needed. After a year off, Zito arrived in Arizona motivated to show he could still pitch at the highest level.
LA DODGERS: LOS ANGELES (AP) - The Los Angeles Dodgers have a new front office. Shortstop Hanley Ramirez, outfielder Matt Kemp, second-baseman Dee Gordon and pitcher Dan Haren are gone from a roster that won the NL West title last season.
Change was everywhere at the Dodgers' spring camp and all of it was designed to enhance their chances of achieving a goal that has never changed: Winning the World Series.
It eluded them last October in the NL Division series against the St. Louis Cardinals. It eluded them after the club was sold for $2.15 billion three years ago. It's eluded them since 1988.
''Everything we're doing is in the vein of trying to put ourselves in the best position to make it into October and then play as long as we can,'' said Andrew Friedman, the team's new president of baseball operations, who along with new general manager Farhan Zaidi employed an analytic approach to a winter makeover of a roster that had won back-to-back NL West titles.
Make no mistake, though, the changes were built around those who are back. At the top of the pitching order is Clayton Kershaw, the 2014 NL MVP and three-time Cy Young Award winner. Kershaw is armed with motivation to make amends for last fall's struggles. In right field, there's the young Yasiel Puig, an All-Star who was benched for some of the postseason.
A key to the makeover is in the heart of the infield, where Friedman and Zaidi acquired shortstop Jimmy Rollins from Philadelphia and second baseman Howie Kendrick from the Angels.
''Instant credibility,'' Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said of the two veterans who some think will plug holes in what was an inconsistent defense. ''I think they bring a ton to the table for us. They create stability up the middle.''
There are questions whether the Dodgers sacrificed some offense in losing Ramirez' big bat and Gordon's speed. Ramirez signed with Boston. Gordon, a 2014 All Star, was traded to Miami. Meanwhile, Kemp's proven power is also gone. He was traded to San Diego for catcher Yasmani Grandal.
The Dodgers were willing to move Kemp because of what they've seen in 22-year-old Joc Pederson, who through 17 spring games was batting .417. Pederson appears to have the edge over veteran Andre Ethier as the starter in center field. With Carl Crawford in left and Puig in right, there's no room for Ethier, who said early in camp that he wants to be an everyday player.
Then there's the pitching staff. Kershaw and Zack Greinke are locks for the top of the rotation. After them, there are questions. No. 3 starter Hyun-Jin Ryu is likely to start the season on the disabled list because of an ailing left shoulder. Friedman signed projected starters Brandon McCarthy (four years at $48 million) and Brett Anderson (one year at $10 million), but each has a long history of injury.
With the uncertainty surrounding Ryu, it's not clear who will be the fifth starter. Joe Wieland, also acquired from San Diego in the deal for Kemp, was considered a leading possibility.
In the bullpen, the biggest question is about closer Kenley Jansen, who underwent surgery on Feb. 17 to have a growth removed from the fifth metatarsal on his left foot. He was expected to be out for 8-to-12 weeks. Until he's back, Mattingly said he might use a committee of pitchers to fill the role.
QUIET PUIG: Except for an occasional flip of the bat, it was a quiet camp for Puig, who is beginning his third season. Through 12 games, he was batting a modest .226 with 3 homers. ''I don't think his spring was that great last year either,'' Mattingly said. ''I'm not really concerned about his average or anything. I think he looks fine. He's hit some balls decent. He's a lot like other guys who know they're going to be around. They take their bats different than guys who are trying to show us what they can do.''
IMPATIENT KERSHAW: Kershaw never has much patience for questions about the World Series in the spring. ''Every team thinks they're going to win the World Series at this time of year,'' he said. ''That's everybody's goal and it should be. If you don't win the World Series, it's a failure.''
POWER ADJUSTMENT: First baseman Adrian Gonzalez has his own take on the Dodgers' altered offense. ''People are saying say that we lost power, but I think we just put the power in different spots of the lineup,'' he said.

*Athletics-Dodgers Preview* ===========================

By KEVIN CHROUST STATS Writer

Oakland (44-56) at Los Angeles (56-44), 10:10 p.m. EDT

There was a fear that Brett Anderson's last start could have ended his season. Instead, he'll be back on the mound six days later to take on his former team.

After trading their closer, the slumping Oakland Athletics begin a two-game series in Los Angeles on Tuesday night as the Dodgers open a five-game home stretch against the AL West.

Anderson (5-5, 3.33 ERA) departed last Tuesday's 4-3 loss in Atlanta with what was thought to be a potentially serious Achilles injury after allowing three runs in 2 2-3 innings. After his ERA dipped to a season-best 3.00 on July 1, it's been on the rise in three starts with the left-hander going 0-1 with a 5.52 mark.

He threw a bullpen session Friday and simulated some defensive plays, and things went smoothly enough to avoid the disabled list and get back on the mound after Monday's off day.

"I got through it and it feels good," Anderson told MLB's official website. "My throws were crisper, stronger than the two-plus innings in Atlanta. I simulated coming off the mound for bunts, pushing off the mound, which is always a concern for me."

The focus now shifts to facing the club with which he spent his first five - albeit injury-shortened - seasons from 2009-13, and the A's are countering with their top arm.

Sonny Gray, however, hasn't been quite as sharp in his last two starts after throwing a shutout in his final game before the All-Star break. Gray (10-4, 2.30) gave up two runs and nine hits in seven innings of Wednesday's 4-3 home win over Toronto. He didn't earn the decision and is 0-1 with seven runs allowed in 13 innings since the break, including three home runs after giving up five in his first 18 starts.

Gray has been most effective on the road with a 7-1 record and 1.84 ERA in 11 starts, though run support could be an issue.

After falling 4-3 in San Francisco on Sunday, Oakland (44-56) has lost four straight with nine runs scored and a .214 average, cementing its status as a seller as the trade deadline approaches.

Stephen Vogt is turning in a terrible month at the plate with a .178 average dating to June 30, though Ben Zobrist is hitting .349 in 12 games. His .268 average is higher than it's been since reaching .286 on April 14, he'll be a free agent, and his position versatility is another selling point.

"I understand it's a tough decision for GMs, going, 'What can I get in return for some of these guys?'" Zobrist said. "They're trying to give the organization the best chance to win going forward. But from a player's standpoint, you never want to feel like anyone's giving up."

Zobrist's fate might have come into clearer focus after Oakland sent Tyler Clippard to the New York Mets for minor league pitcher Casey Meisner on Monday. The 30-year-old Clippard, who is eligible for free agency after the season, is 1-3 with a 2.79 ERA and 17 saves in 21 chances.

The Dodgers (56-44) haven't been a whole lot better offensively with a .223 average over a 3-3 span. They lost 3-2 to the New York Mets on Sunday, settling for a road split after winning the first two.

Howie Kendrick is 1 for 17 in his last four games, and the former Los Angeles Angels second baseman went 3 for 17 in his last five against Oakland. Fellow infielder Adrian Gonzalez has batted .167 in his last 20 home games and .160 in his past 12 interleague contests.

Oakland has won 14 of the last 18 meetings, with the clubs' last meeting coming in 2012. The A's 41-27 record in interleague play dating to the start of 2012 trails only Pittsburgh for the best in the majors.
