KEY GAME INFORMATION
NY YANKEES: NEW YORK (AP) - Derek Jeter is gone, the final remaining link to the New York Yankees' last dynasty. He left behind a team in transition, that failed to make the playoffs in consecutive years for the first time in a generation and is beset with an older core coming off injuries.
Alex Rodriguez's return from a season-long drug suspension is the most interesting aspect of the Yankees, who enter the season with a health-challenged rotation, rebuilt bullpen and lineup that was among the least potent in the American League last year.
''I think we've added a lot of good young arms,'' manager Joe Girardi said. ''Added some good young players, as well. I think we've really seen an improvement in our young minor league players and the impact they are capable of having. I think we will continue to see that for years to come.''
If the Yankees founder, young players could be given more of a chance. Top prospects include pitcher Luis Severino, infielders Jose Pirela and Rob Refsnyder, and outfielder Aaron Judge.
But first, many of the old, beaten-up players will be given a chance to show they have something left.
Left fielder Brett Gardner (abdomen) and right fielder Carlos Beltran (elbow) return from surgery, and Jacoby Ellsbury (oblique) missed a significant stretch of spring training. First baseman Mark Teixeira (wrist) hit .216 last year, 143rd among 148 major league qualifiers in his return from an injury that sidelined him for most of 2013.
After signing a big-money deal with the Yankees, catcher Brian McCann was hitting just .209 in May before improving in the second half to finish at .232. Third baseman Chase Headley, acquired from San Diego in July, was given a new contract by the Yankees because they have no confidence in A-Rod's ability to play the field. New York also re-signed Stephen Drew under the theory he can't be as bad as he was in 2014.
Didi Gregorius, obtained from Arizona in a trade, is the primary offensive newcomer and replaces Jeter at shortstop. Left-handed-hitting Garrett Jones hopes to earn at-bats.
''Jeter is still Jeter. Everything that everybody is going to talk about is Jeter,'' Gregorius said. ''But for me - I'm learning and I'm there just to play the game, so just trying to focus on the game and trying to win every game, that's all I can say, not worrying about what's going on around.''
LIGHTNING ROD: The three-time AL MVP, who turns 40 on July 27, has not played a full season since 2007 because the suspension, operations on both hips and other injuries. New York owes him $61 million over the final three seasons of his contract, so he will be given a chance to earn at-bats as a DH, especially against left-handed starters.
RICKETY ROTATION: Masahiro Tanaka missed 2 1/2 months in his first season because of a small elbow ligament tear the Yankees say didn't need surgery. CC Sabathia, limited to eight starts last year, has to show he can pitch effectively with reduced velocity. Michael Pineda, back from shoulder surgery, had a 1.89 ERA in 13 starts last year but missed a long stretch because of the shoulder. New York hopes hard-throwing Nathan Eovaldi can learn to be effective after his acquisition from Miami. With Chris Capuano on the DL and Ivan Nova not expected back from Tommy John surgery until May or June, Adam Warren was the leading contender for fifth starter.
BULLPEN: A strong point last year, the Yankees rebuilt the `pen. David Robertson was allowed to leave for the Chicago White Sox, and David Phelps, Shawn Kelley and Shane Greene were traded. Lefty Andrew Miller and Scott Baker were signed, and Justin Wilson and Chris Martin acquired in trades. Miller and Dellin Betances competed in spring training to replace Robertson as closer.
HOPS: The Yankees are sharing their ballpark with Major League Soccer's expansion New York City team, and Teixeira complained before the soccer team's home opener that the infield would get torn up, leading to bad hops.
OAKLAND: OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - The Oakland Athletics topped even their most trade-happy of days by making nine swaps involving 27 players in a wild offseason for Billy Beane and his front-office mates.
As far as Beane is concerned, the A's wouldn't have even had a chance to close the gap on the reigning AL West champion Los Angeles Angels without a major offseason overhaul.
Even if that meant shipping out a trio of All-Stars in third baseman Josh Donaldson, first baseman Brandon Moss and catcher Derek Norris.
''Our expectations don't change, not with the guys we brought in,'' manager Bob Melvin said. ''You look at it early on and you're thinking, `What are we doing here?' Then we see the last few moves ... and it all came together at the end as far as what this team would look like going into spring. ... We feel real good about this group.''
There were so many changes that Melvin had to search for names on the backs of jerseys during February's FanFest.
Billy Butler is the new designated hitter, and two-time All-Star infielder Ben Zobrist can play just about anywhere for Melvin, who is always one to mix and match his lineups based on matchups and who's playing well. Ike Davis came in a November trade from the Pirates to play first base, while third baseman Brett Lawrie came from the Blue Jays in the swap that sent Donaldson to Toronto.
''It's unique. I don't think many teams have taken turnover like this,'' reliever Dan Otero said. ''Who are we to judge? Everybody's here for a reason, so it's going to be great.''
Still, all the change took some getting used to this spring for an Oakland clubhouse known for its easygoing nature.
You first must know your teammates' names.
''Team chemistry's a little funky. You have to spend time with people and get to know people for team chemistry to fully come,'' center fielder Coco Crisp said. ''You can't expect it just to happen. We'll be fine. We have a good group of core guys, guys that talk and mingle.''
Here are some things to know as the A's chase a fourth straight playoff berth:
BUTLER'S BIG MOVE: Butler makes the first move of his career and is coming off a down season with the Royals, who lost in a seven-game World Series to San Francisco. He batted .271 with nine home runs and 66 RBIs in 151 games last year, 108 of those as a DH. ''Everybody's awesome to be around,'' Butler said. ''I couldn't be happier to get ready for another year with them. There are a lot of talented major league guys in this room.''
FILLING THE VOIDS: Lawrie batted .247 with 12 home runs and 38 RBIs in 70 games for Toronto last season and takes pride in his defense to back up a talented rotation led by Sonny Gray and Scott Kazmir. ''We have a lot of ability out there and that's a plus for the pitching staff,'' Lawrie said. ''All they have to do is take care of business.''
GRIFFIN AND PARKER: Both right-handers are recovering from elbow ligament reconstructive surgery that sidelined them all of 2014. Parker hopes to return shortly after the season begins, while June has long been the target goal for these two. ''There's no reason to start ripping the slider,'' Parker said. ''I'm going to focus on command.''
SPEEDY OUTFIELD: Despite the losses around the diamond, Melvin likes the look of his speedy outfield with Crisp, Sam Fuld and Craig Gentry. ''They can cover a lot of ground,'' Melvin said. ''In the case of Gentry and Fuld, they throw very well, too. Especially in our outfield at home, the field can play big and you need to cover a lot of ground out there. It's a comfort to have, and I know our pitchers feel good about it, too, that on a cold night in Oakland, you can stay. It's tough to go opposite field and know that when a ball's hit in the air and stays in the ballpark it's probably going to get caught.''
ZITO'S COMEBACK: Back in his original uniform two years removed from the end of a $126 million, seven-year contract with San Francisco, lefty Barry Zito looks to be a factor for the A's out of the bullpen - or even to start when needed. After a year off, Zito arrived in Arizona motivated to show he could still pitch at the highest level.

*Yankees-Athletics Preview* ===========================

By KEVIN CHROUST STATS Writer

New York (25-23) at Oakland (18-32), 10:05 p.m. EDT

The last time Sonny Gray pitched, he was removed without allowing a run after being tagged on the right ankle by a batted ball. Now that the injury concern has passed, the Oakland Athletics are just hoping the scare will in no way throw off his impressive season.

The right-hander returns to the mound Friday night at home against the New York Yankees as Alex Rodriguez hopes to pass Barry Bonds for second on the all-time RBI list.

Gray (5-2, 1.77 ERA) earned the decision in Sunday's 7-2 win in Tampa Bay, despite being limited to five innings because of the injury. He allowed four hits and has the AL's lowest ERA, as well as the fifth-lowest by an Oakland pitcher through 10 starts during the designated hitter era. Dan Haren was the last to better him with a 1.74 ERA in 2007, and only Steve Ontiveros' seven earned runs in his first 10 starts in 1994 were fewer than Gray's 13.

The rest of the A's staff has closed the gap. After Thursday's series-opening 5-4 win, Oakland (18-32) has won four of six overall, 15 of 20 against the Yankees (25-23) and 10 of 11 against them in Oakland. The three runs allowed by Kendall Graveman are the only earned runs the starting staff has allowed in 36 2-3 innings over the A's last six games. The rotation hasn't allowed more than three earned runs in 17 games for an MLB-best 2.42 mark dating to May 11.

What hasn't improved is their fielding. Another error Thursday padded their MLB lead to 51, nearly doubling the 26 their opponents have committed.

That was overshadowed offensively as Billy Burns and Brett Lawrie homered to help overcome a 3-0 deficit.

"We played the game the right way tonight," Lawrie said.

Gray's one career start against the Yankees resulted in a 7-0 home loss on June 13 after yielding three runs and seven hits in six innings.

His opposition, Chris Capuano, has allowed as many home runs in two starts as Gray has all season - two - and it hasn't been only the long ball that's plagued his return to the rotation. Filling in for the injured Chase Whitley, the left-hander has lasted just 7 1-3 innings in those outings. Capuano (0-2, 7.36) allowed three runs and eight hits with a home run in 4 1-3 innings of Sunday's 5-2 home loss to Texas.

"My No. 1 goal going out there was to get deep in the game and take pressure off the bullpen," Capuano told MLB's official website. "Going 4 1-3 innings, I'm not happy with that. I need to pitch better."

Since joining the Yankees in late July, his best work has come on the road with a 2-3 record and 3.67 ERA in six starts as opposed to a 0-2 mark with a 5.35 ERA in eight starts at Yankee Stadium.

He faced the A's three times last season in relief with Boston and allowed four runs and five hits in 1 1-3 innings.

The Yankees had won three in a row before Thursday, but they've still lost 11 of their last 15. That includes four straight road losses and defeats in eight of nine after beginning the season 12-5 in opposing parks. They haven't dropped five straight on the road since June 11-15, 2013, which included three losses in Oakland.

Rodriguez matched Bonds with his 1,996th RBI Thursday on a sacrifice fly.

Brian McCann homered for a third straight game and has at least a hit and an RBI in six straight while going 8 for 19 with 10 RBIs.
