KEY GAME INFORMATION
KANSAS CITY: KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Every once in a while, Ned Yost will spin a story about his days on Bobby Cox's bench with the Atlanta Braves, back when the organization was winning NL pennants by the fistful.
Inevitably, Yost would start drawing comparisons to his Kansas City Royals - that they were building through the farm system in the same manner as the Braves, and Kansas City would embrace the franchise in the same way Atlanta did if it ever became a winner.
Last year, that narrative finally made sense.
After squeaking into the playoffs as a wild card, the Royals swept all the way to the World Series. If not for a virtuoso performance by Madison Bumgarner of the San Francisco Giants, the Royals might very well have been celebrating their second championship.
The postseason run led Yost to draw one more comparison when he arrived in Arizona for the start of a new season, and his players filed into the clubhouse for the first time.
''It definitely reminded me of that feeling in Atlanta,'' he said, ''when you came to spring training every year with the feeling that you have an opportunity to go to the World Series - instead of hoping, you know? And it's a different feeling.''
There is good reason for that feeling, too.
The Royals return most of the pieces from the club that ended a 29-year playoff drought, including one of the best bullpens in baseball history. And the pieces they did lose to free agency have been replaced with what could turn out to be upgrades.
Designated hitter Billy Butler is gone, Kendrys Morales signed in his place. Alex Rios is taking over for Nori Aoki in right field. Edinson Volquez was signed to fill the rotation spot of staff ace James Shields, who chased bigger money all the way to San Diego.
Even though a few faces have changed, the tenants that the Royals believe in have not: They will continue to rely on speed, defense and pitching to chase another playoff berth.
''Any time you're fortunate enough to keep those key pieces, you feel good,'' said Greg Holland, the Royals' All-Star closer. ''Yeah, we lost Billy and Shields and Nori, but for the most part, we're right where we need to be.''
Besides, the back end of the bullpen is still intact.
Kelvin Herrera harnessed his electrifying fastball to become a shutdown seventh-inning reliever last season. Former starter Wade Davis had a historically dominant year as the setup man. Holland further cemented his status as the AL's best closer.
''The way you tilt the field in your favor, in my opinion, is having quality pitching and really good defense,'' Royals general manager Dayton Moore said. ''Those are things that hopefully can show up every single day and perform for you.''
As the Royals approach opening day against the Chicago White Sox on April 6 at Kauffman Stadium, here are a few other story lines to watch this season:
THE ROTATION: Shields was the anchor in 2014, but he struggled mightily in the playoffs. So when the Royals signed Volquez to replace him, it was mostly met with a collective shrug.
Besides, the success of the rotation will more likely be determined by the success of young flamethrowers Danny Duffy and Yordano Ventura, both of whom have ace ability.
INJURY BUGS: The Royals stayed remarkably healthy last season. Will karma even out?
Second baseman Omar Infante already missed long stretches of spring training with a bone spur in his elbow that could require surgery next offseason. Left fielder Alex Gordon also got a slow start to the spring after undergoing wrist surgery this past offseason.
SLOW STARTS: The last couple of seasons, the Royals have gotten off to slow starts. They unsuccessfully dug out of a big hole two years ago, but pulled it off last season.
Considering every other team in the AL Central appeared to get better over the winter, the Royals can ill afford to let Detroit, Cleveland and Minnesota and the White Sox bury them.
RESTING SALVY: All-Star catcher Salvador Perez faded in the playoffs in part due to his heavy work load in the regular season, where he appeared in 150 games. Yost intends to give him more days off this year, though it's hard to take his bat out of the lineup.
BASEBALL TOWN: Did the World Series run turn Kansas City into a baseball town again? The club has been overshadowed for decades by the Chiefs, who play just across the parking lot in Arrowhead stadium. How will fans respond to having the reigning AL champions?
NY YANKEES: NEW YORK (AP) - Derek Jeter is gone, the final remaining link to the New York Yankees' last dynasty. He left behind a team in transition, that failed to make the playoffs in consecutive years for the first time in a generation and is beset with an older core coming off injuries.
Alex Rodriguez's return from a season-long drug suspension is the most interesting aspect of the Yankees, who enter the season with a health-challenged rotation, rebuilt bullpen and lineup that was among the least potent in the American League last year.
''I think we've added a lot of good young arms,'' manager Joe Girardi said. ''Added some good young players, as well. I think we've really seen an improvement in our young minor league players and the impact they are capable of having. I think we will continue to see that for years to come.''
If the Yankees founder, young players could be given more of a chance. Top prospects include pitcher Luis Severino, infielders Jose Pirela and Rob Refsnyder, and outfielder Aaron Judge.
But first, many of the old, beaten-up players will be given a chance to show they have something left.
Left fielder Brett Gardner (abdomen) and right fielder Carlos Beltran (elbow) return from surgery, and Jacoby Ellsbury (oblique) missed a significant stretch of spring training. First baseman Mark Teixeira (wrist) hit .216 last year, 143rd among 148 major league qualifiers in his return from an injury that sidelined him for most of 2013.
After signing a big-money deal with the Yankees, catcher Brian McCann was hitting just .209 in May before improving in the second half to finish at .232. Third baseman Chase Headley, acquired from San Diego in July, was given a new contract by the Yankees because they have no confidence in A-Rod's ability to play the field. New York also re-signed Stephen Drew under the theory he can't be as bad as he was in 2014.
Didi Gregorius, obtained from Arizona in a trade, is the primary offensive newcomer and replaces Jeter at shortstop. Left-handed-hitting Garrett Jones hopes to earn at-bats.
''Jeter is still Jeter. Everything that everybody is going to talk about is Jeter,'' Gregorius said. ''But for me - I'm learning and I'm there just to play the game, so just trying to focus on the game and trying to win every game, that's all I can say, not worrying about what's going on around.''
LIGHTNING ROD: The three-time AL MVP, who turns 40 on July 27, has not played a full season since 2007 because the suspension, operations on both hips and other injuries. New York owes him $61 million over the final three seasons of his contract, so he will be given a chance to earn at-bats as a DH, especially against left-handed starters.
RICKETY ROTATION: Masahiro Tanaka missed 2 1/2 months in his first season because of a small elbow ligament tear the Yankees say didn't need surgery. CC Sabathia, limited to eight starts last year, has to show he can pitch effectively with reduced velocity. Michael Pineda, back from shoulder surgery, had a 1.89 ERA in 13 starts last year but missed a long stretch because of the shoulder. New York hopes hard-throwing Nathan Eovaldi can learn to be effective after his acquisition from Miami. With Chris Capuano on the DL and Ivan Nova not expected back from Tommy John surgery until May or June, Adam Warren was the leading contender for fifth starter.
BULLPEN: A strong point last year, the Yankees rebuilt the `pen. David Robertson was allowed to leave for the Chicago White Sox, and David Phelps, Shawn Kelley and Shane Greene were traded. Lefty Andrew Miller and Scott Baker were signed, and Justin Wilson and Chris Martin acquired in trades. Miller and Dellin Betances competed in spring training to replace Robertson as closer.
HOPS: The Yankees are sharing their ballpark with Major League Soccer's expansion New York City team, and Teixeira complained before the soccer team's home opener that the infield would get torn up, leading to bad hops.

*Royals-Yankees Preview* ========================

By JEFF BARTL STATS Senior Writer

Kansas City (28-16) at New York (23-22), 1:05 p.m. EDT

Chris Young relishes any chance he gets to succeed in the majors after dealing with a long history of shoulder problems.

Coincidentally, injuries have given him the opportunity to shine in the Kansas City Royals' starting rotation.

Two days after turning 36, Young looks to help the Royals avoid a fourth straight loss Wednesday by beating the host New York Yankees for the second time in less than two weeks.

Kansas City (28-17) signed Young to a one-year deal loaded with incentives in early March, expecting the veteran to be a long reliever after he went 12-9 with a 3.65 ERA for Seattle in 2014 to earn AL Comeback Player of the Year.

Young hadn't pitched in the majors in 2013 following right shoulder surgery but made 20 starts for the first time since 2007. He's had seven trips to the disabled list.

Injuries to Jason Vargas and Danny Duffy gave him an opportunity to join the Royals' rotation earlier this month, and Young (4-0, 0.78 ERA) has made a good case to remain a part of it. He is 3-0 with a 0.40 ERA in four starts after giving up six hits in six innings of Friday's 5-0 win over St. Louis.

Vargas was activated from the disabled list and started Tuesday in place of Duffy, who was placed on the DL on Monday retroactive to May 17 with left biceps tendinitis.

"One thing the bullpen taught me is to make one good pitch at a time," Young told MLB's official website. "The numbers all even out through time. I just like the element of competition of being out there."

Young beat the Yankees on May 15, allowing one run in 5 2-3 innings of a 12-1 win. Michael Pineda surrendered five runs and 10 hits in 5 1-3 innings while taking the loss, and he'll be on the mound again Wednesday.

Pineda (5-2, 3.59) went six innings Friday but lost again as he gave up each of his seven runs - four earned - and committed a throwing error in the third inning of a 10-9 loss to Texas. He also served up a pair of homers, matching the total he allowed over his first eight starts.

It marked the right-hander's second straight rough start since striking out a career-high 16 in a win over Baltimore on May 10.

"I'll put everything in the past," Pineda said. "It's a new day, so I'll continue working and keep my head up, get ready for next time."

Pineda went 2-2 with a 1.65 ERA in four starts against the Royals before losing to Young. Mike Moustakas singled, doubled and tripled off Pineda 12 days ago and is now 5 for 10 in their matchups.

Moustakas recorded the Royals' first hit in the fourth inning of Tuesday's 5-1 loss that followed a 14-1 defeat in the series opener. Kansas City has scored one run in each contest during its first three-game skid of the season.

The Yankees (24-22) lost six straight and 10 of 11 coming into this series.

Mark Teixeira was the only New York starter without a hit Monday and entered Tuesday in a 3-for-21 slump, but he broke out with a two-run homer and a two-run double.

"You want to back up a win with another good performance," Teixeira said. "Fourteen runs is nice, but if you lose the next night, you're kind of back to where you started. Getting two in a row was big for us."

Teixeira is 4 for 8 with two homers off Young since the start of last season.

New York hasn't swept the Royals at home since April 11-13, 2006.
