KEY GAME INFORMATION
SAN FRANCISCO: SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - The San Francisco Giants lost Pablo Sandoval to big money and the Boston Red Sox. They missed out paying big money to left-hander Jon Lester, who instead signed with the Chicago Cubs.
While the reigning World Series champions are ready to shed that every-other-year title trend, plenty of people wonder whether general manager Brian Sabean and his staff did enough during the offseason to stay near the top in the talented NL West.
Ask manager Bruce Bochy and his players, and they consider the additions of healthy right-hander Matt Cain and center fielder Angel Pagan back into the mix as a big deal right up there with signing a prized free agent.
And, of course, they have World Series MVP Madison Bumgarner ready to build off his remarkable postseason.
As he addressed the team at the start of spring training, Bochy reminded the Giants that it's hard to win consistently year after year.
''We had a great year last year,'' Bochy said. ''We have to go about our business and get ready for a new year. We'll still enjoy and savor those memories but at the same time it's time for us to get ready. ... Your lock on success is as good as that last game, so we've got to get after it.''
Durable right fielder Hunter Pence is sidelined with a broken left forearm that could keep him out until early May, while left fielder Nori Aoki will join the team he lost to in last year's Fall Classic while with the Kansas City Royals.
Casey McGehee, traded to San Francisco from the Marlins, will take over at third base with Sandoval's departure on a $95 million, five-year contract to Boston. He has said he won't try to replace the formerly popular Kung Fu Panda.
''I feel like we get a lot of flak for not doing anything this offseason,'' shortstop Brandon Crawford said. ''We got Aoki, we got McGehee. We have Cain coming back healthy that I think a lot of people forget. We've got Pagan coming back healthy. It's almost like getting four new guys.''
Bochy joked to Aoki - whom he calls ''a catalyst'' - about hitting 30 home runs. The speedy Japanese outfielder responded, ''24.''
''We're playing for a championship,'' Aoki said. ''It's a passionate group of guys.''
Here are some things to look for with the Giants, who have captured three World Series titles in the past five years:
BUMGARNER'S NEXT STEP: Bumgarner threw 270 innings, including 21 with two wins and a save in the World Series.
He went 4-1 during the postseason following an 18-10 regular season. From his four-hit, 10-strikeout gem that got things started in an 8-0 wild-card win at Pittsburgh all the way through his brilliant relief outing in Game 7 of the World Series to beat the Royals, Bumgarner became one of the postseason's best pitchers ever.
''I think he'll be comfortable in his skin,'' pitching coach Dave Righetti said.
HUDSON'S HURRAH: This is it for Tim Hudson, who has said he will retire after his 17th major league season.
He won his first championship last year, advancing out of the first round for the first time.
Now, the 39-year-old pitcher is bouncing back from surgery to remove bone spurs from his right ankle, the same one he injured during the 2013 season with Atlanta that sidelined him for the final two months.
PAGAN'S BALKY BACK: Pagan arrived at spring training declaring himself pain-free for the first time in years following back surgery.
Despite some flare-ups, Pagan and the Giants are counting on a full season. He joked to Bochy that he's ready to play 160 games.
Pagan played in only 96 last season and 71 in 2013 because of injuries.
''It's a new slate for everybody, including him,'' Bochy said.
RELIABLE BULLPEN: San Francisco's bullpen is lined up again - Jeremy Affeldt, Javier Lopez, Sergio Romo and Santiago Casilla. Each of these pitchers has been part of all three title teams.
Casilla became closer after Romo struggled in June, though Bochy knows he can mix and match with these guys. Then, there's Yusmeiro Petit, who showed he can start or relieve with equal efficiency.
''You want to remind them to take advantage of what you have,'' Bochy said. ''We've got a great group here and we don't ever want to lose out on this opportunity.''
MILWAUKEE: MILWAUKEE (AP) - Success for the Brewers this season may hinge on Milwaukee's consistency in the batter's box.
September swoons can prove costly - as can prolonged slumps any other time of year, for that matter.
A lineup filled with accomplished hitters like Ryan Braun, Jonathan Lucroy and Carlos Gomez has the potential to score runs. To break into the playoffs from the competitive NL Central, the Brewers must eliminate team-wide slumps.
''Last year we kind of grinded it to a point where instead of just playing day to day and for that game and to win, we looked like we were forcing things,'' manager Ron Roenicke said. ''We were trying to hold on to what we had, and that's not the way we go about it.''
The Brewers spent 150 days in first place before a stunning, late-season collapse left them out of the playoffs for a third straight year.
''We've got a good club, and when we're playing the type of baseball I think we can play every night ... if we just worry about that game today, at the end of the season, good things will happen,'' the skipper added from the team's spring training complex in Phoenix.
The lineup is bashing again this spring.
After a slow start, Braun has been hitting much better following an unusual offseason medical procedure. Extreme cold was applied to his right hand in hopes of fixing a lingering nerve problem near the thumb.
Lucroy also looks like he is over a hamstring injury that limited him for the first few weeks of spring training. The upbeat, energetic Gomez had three homers three weeks into spring ball.
''Every day you learn something new ... you learn from that,'' Gomez said about the 2014 season. ''The first step we have to do is make the playoffs. We take it game by game.''
The regular season begins on April 6 against Colorado at Miller Park. Some things to watch with the Brewers:
PITCHING: The Brewers don't have a true ace, but they do have solid veterans atop the rotation in Kyle Lohse and Matt Garza. Wily Peralta won 17 games last year in his second full season in the majors, and Mike Fiers impressed down the stretch. But Milwaukee traded Yovani Gallardo and Marco Estrada, so there is no experienced starting depth. Young right-hander Jimmy Nelson must prove he can be a consistent fifth starter. A long-term injury to any of the starting five could leave the Brewers scrambling.
In the bullpen, veteran Francisco Rodriguez figures to return to the closer's role after re-signing with the club more than two weeks into spring training. He bounced back with 44 saves in 49 chances last season.
AGGRESSIVENESS: Roenicke likes his team to take chances on the base paths, and he's sticking with that philosophy. That puts the Brewers in attack mode, and when working at its best, the strategy forces the defense to rush and possibly make mistakes. But rally-killing outs on the bases can make fans at Miller Park groan. Perhaps of more concern is the approach at the plate, where the Brewers led the majors by swinging at 33 percent of first pitches, according to STATS. Darnell Coles is the new hitting coach. The team wants to stay aggressive while having more plate discipline.
KEYSTONE COMBO: While Braun, Lucroy and Gomez draw much of the attention in the lineup, the Brewers' keystone combination of second baseman Scooter Gennett and shortstop Jean Segura will be just as vital to the team's success. Gennett, a left-hander, will play every day and must prove he can hit lefties consistently. The speedy Segura is a top defender, though he is looking to bounce back from a slump that dropped his average nearly 50 points to .246.
RAMMY OUT: It is probably one more and done for third baseman Aramis Ramirez, who turns 36 in June. He has said he likely will retire after this season to spend more time with his family. Ramirez's production has waned over the last two seasons, though he remains one of the best in the league in fielding bunts and slow rollers to third.

*Giants-Brewers Preview* ========================

By KEVIN CHROUST STATS Writer

San Francisco (25-20) at Milwaukee (16-29), 8:10 p.m. EDT

While Madison Bumgarner settles into a groove for defending World Series champion San Francisco, Matt Garza's season is running parallel with that of last-place Milwaukee.

Bumgarner will try to win a third straight start and continue his dominance of the Brewers Tuesday night at Miller Park, while Garza needs to beat the Giants to avoid a winless May.

Bumgarner (5-2, 2.84 ERA) improved to 4-1 with a 1.60 ERA in his last five starts after allowing seven hits in 6 1-3 innings of Thursday's 4-0 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The 25-year-old's .244 opponent batting average is up slightly from a .226 mark over the past three seasons, but the World Series MVP so many saw as a complete pitcher last fall might be progressing in another area.

The left-hander's 5.20 strikeout-to-walk ratio and 1.58 walks per nine innings through nine starts are on pace to be career bests. Dating to July 13, he's gone 29 starts, including the postseason, without walking more than two batters, and he's just one piece of a team Brewers manager Craig Counsell has come to respect.

"It seems like there's a real consistency to their culture, and I think it helps them ride the wave a little bit, that the baseball season can have," Counsell told MLB's official website. "They stick with it, and it's paid big dividends for them in the end."

In two career starts at Miller Park, he's 1-0 while allowing one earned run in 15 2-3 innings, and in seven overall against the Brewers, he's 4-2 with a 1.65 ERA.

Garza (2-6, 5.71) is 0-3 with a 7.15 ERA this month, including consecutive defeats after allowing four runs and five hits in 6 1-3 innings of Thursday's 10-1 loss in Atlanta. His numbers have been better in four home starts with a 4.13 ERA, but he has a 0-3 record to show for it.

Garza is 1-1 with a 2.84 ERA against the Giants with success against Gregor Blanco (1 for 7) and newcomer Nori Aoki (1 for 11).

The Giants (26-20) started the series with Monday's 8-4 victory, using a seven-run sixth inning to overcome a 4-1 deficit for a fourth straight win in the series with an average of 14.5 hits. They're also 17-7 this month, trailing only Washington and Minnesota.

"We've had the rain delays in (a four-game split in) Colorado and the travel and lack of sleep," Andrew Susac said. "It's a pretty gutsy effort from us right there."

Aoki, who spent his first two seasons in Milwaukee, was 4 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs in his first game back. Hunter Pence went 3 for 4 while driving in two. Aoki is batting .484 in seven games, while Pence's return from injury has come with a .342 average in 10. He's also 17 for 34 in his last eight games against Milwaukee.

The win came with Buster Posey out of the lineup, but he figures to return Tuesday with a 12-game hitting streak. The former MVP is 16 for 42 with six home runs at Miller Park, and his 1.306 OPS there is his top mark of any park where he has recorded more than 10 at-bats.

The club is also getting production from third baseman Matt Duffy, who's batting .375 in his last 15 games, prompting the Giants to designate Casey McGehee for assignment on Sunday.

For the Brewers (16-30), Khris Davis went 3 for 3 with two home runs, while Ryan Braun went deep for the fourth time in seven games. He's batting .353 with six homers and 18 RBIs in his last 11 and is 6 for 20 with two home runs and two doubles against Bumgarner.
