KEY GAME INFORMATION
MILWAUKEE: MILWAUKEE (AP) - Success for the Brewers this season may hinge on Milwaukee's consistency in the batter's box.
September swoons can prove costly - as can prolonged slumps any other time of year, for that matter.
A lineup filled with accomplished hitters like Ryan Braun, Jonathan Lucroy and Carlos Gomez has the potential to score runs. To break into the playoffs from the competitive NL Central, the Brewers must eliminate team-wide slumps.
''Last year we kind of grinded it to a point where instead of just playing day to day and for that game and to win, we looked like we were forcing things,'' manager Ron Roenicke said. ''We were trying to hold on to what we had, and that's not the way we go about it.''
The Brewers spent 150 days in first place before a stunning, late-season collapse left them out of the playoffs for a third straight year.
''We've got a good club, and when we're playing the type of baseball I think we can play every night ... if we just worry about that game today, at the end of the season, good things will happen,'' the skipper added from the team's spring training complex in Phoenix.
The lineup is bashing again this spring.
After a slow start, Braun has been hitting much better following an unusual offseason medical procedure. Extreme cold was applied to his right hand in hopes of fixing a lingering nerve problem near the thumb.
Lucroy also looks like he is over a hamstring injury that limited him for the first few weeks of spring training. The upbeat, energetic Gomez had three homers three weeks into spring ball.
''Every day you learn something new ... you learn from that,'' Gomez said about the 2014 season. ''The first step we have to do is make the playoffs. We take it game by game.''
The regular season begins on April 6 against Colorado at Miller Park. Some things to watch with the Brewers:
PITCHING: The Brewers don't have a true ace, but they do have solid veterans atop the rotation in Kyle Lohse and Matt Garza. Wily Peralta won 17 games last year in his second full season in the majors, and Mike Fiers impressed down the stretch. But Milwaukee traded Yovani Gallardo and Marco Estrada, so there is no experienced starting depth. Young right-hander Jimmy Nelson must prove he can be a consistent fifth starter. A long-term injury to any of the starting five could leave the Brewers scrambling.
In the bullpen, veteran Francisco Rodriguez figures to return to the closer's role after re-signing with the club more than two weeks into spring training. He bounced back with 44 saves in 49 chances last season.
AGGRESSIVENESS: Roenicke likes his team to take chances on the base paths, and he's sticking with that philosophy. That puts the Brewers in attack mode, and when working at its best, the strategy forces the defense to rush and possibly make mistakes. But rally-killing outs on the bases can make fans at Miller Park groan. Perhaps of more concern is the approach at the plate, where the Brewers led the majors by swinging at 33 percent of first pitches, according to STATS. Darnell Coles is the new hitting coach. The team wants to stay aggressive while having more plate discipline.
KEYSTONE COMBO: While Braun, Lucroy and Gomez draw much of the attention in the lineup, the Brewers' keystone combination of second baseman Scooter Gennett and shortstop Jean Segura will be just as vital to the team's success. Gennett, a left-hander, will play every day and must prove he can hit lefties consistently. The speedy Segura is a top defender, though he is looking to bounce back from a slump that dropped his average nearly 50 points to .246.
RAMMY OUT: It is probably one more and done for third baseman Aramis Ramirez, who turns 36 in June. He has said he likely will retire after this season to spend more time with his family. Ramirez's production has waned over the last two seasons, though he remains one of the best in the league in fielding bunts and slow rollers to third.
ATLANTA: ATLANTA (AP) - The Atlanta Braves usually start the season touted as playoff contenders.
Not this time.
For one of the few times in the last two-plus decades, not much is expected of a team that collapsed late last season, fired general manager Frank Wren and underwent a massive overhaul during the offseason.
The Braves dealt away sluggers Justin Upton, Jason Heyward and Evan Gattis, receiving only one player (starting pitcher Shelby Miller) who is likely to make a significant impact right away. Mostly, the team was focused on restocking a once-mighty farm system that fell on hard times during Wren's regime.
The message was clear: The Braves are rebuilding under new GM John Hart, with an eye toward the 2017 opening of the team's new suburban stadium.
''It's kind of on us to just put our heads down and work hard and try to win as many games as we can with the team we've got,'' third baseman Chris Johnson said. ''We can't look back. We can't look at who's gone.''
The Braves are likely to remain one of the most offensively challenged teams in baseball, but the pitching staff at least looks promising. The 24-year-old Miller had 25 wins for St. Louis over the last two season and joins a rotation that already includes two more 24-year-olds: All-Star Julio Teheran (14-13, 2.89) and left-hander Alex Wood (11-11, 2.78). If lefty Mike Minor, only 27, can bounce back from shoulder problems, the outlook is even brighter.
Atlanta also has perhaps the most dominant closer in the game, Craig Kimbrel, who led the NL in saves for the fourth year in a row with 47.
''I like our pitching,'' manager Fredi Gonzalez said. ''Our rotation is going to be as good as you want.''
Even if the pitching comes through, the Braves have slipped way behind Washington in the NL East and could have trouble holding off the up-and-coming Miami Marlins as well.
Yep, times have changed in Atlanta.
Or maybe not.
''The goal is the same for me,'' Gonzalez insisted. ''Our goal is to make the playoffs.''
WHAT'S IN A NAME?: The center fielder formerly known as B.J. Upton is hoping a name change - actually, using his given name - will help him bounce back from two horrific seasons. The early results were not promising for Melvin Upton Jr., who missed all of spring training with a foot injury. Eric Young Jr. will hold down the starting job until Upton returns. Even then, Upton may have to share playing time unless he shows significant improvement. As it stands now, he's one of the greatest free-agent busts in baseball history. Since signing a $75-million, five-year contract with the Braves, his two-season totals are .198 with 21 homers, 51 RBIs and a staggering 324 strikeouts.
WHERE'S THE OFFENSE?: Even with Upton, Heyward and Gattis, the Braves scored the second-fewest runs in the majors. The offense was virtually non-existent coming down the stretch, the major reason Atlanta went 7-18 over the final month and wound up 17 games behind Washington after being tied for first at the All-Star break. The homer-or-bust philosophy clearly didn't work, so the Braves are hoping to scrap for runs this season. They'll have to with a lineup likely to include journeymen such as Young and Jonny Gomes, as well as rookie second baseman Jace Peterson. The only major offensive addition was right fielder Nick Markakis, and he's coming off neck surgery.
FREDI'S FUTURE: After firing Wren with a week to go in the disappointing 2014 season, the Braves decided to bring back Gonzalez for another year. He certainly deserved a shot to make up for a late-season collapse that was largely the result of a feeble offense. Let's not forget: During Gonzalez's first three years as manager, Atlanta won an NL East title, made two playoff appearances and missed out on another postseason berth on the final day. But his long-term future looks shaky, even with a franchise that cherishes stability. The Braves are definitely in rebuilding mode, and the manager often takes the fall when the losses begin to pile up.

*Brewers-Braves Preview* ========================

By JORDAN GARRETSON STATS Writer

Milwaukee (15-25) at Atlanta (18-20), 7:10 p.m. EDT

Just when Matt Garza seemed to be rolling, he turned in one of the worst starts of his career.

He'll try to bounce back Thursday night against a team he's never beaten when the Milwaukee Brewers visit the Atlanta Braves.

Garza (2-5, 5.72 ERA) is hoping to recover from a disastrous showing in Saturday's 14-1 loss to the New York Mets. He yielded a career-worst 10 runs and 10 hits in a season-low 3 1-3 innings.

A failure to buckle down with runners in scoring position plagued the right-hander, who gave up four hits in eight at-bats in those situations. Opponents had been 8 for 45 on the season against Garza with runners in scoring position.

He had recorded four straight quality starts after giving up one run and three hits over seven innings in his previous outing.

"It's a head-scratcher but you just keep going," he said. "It's a weird game. The ball bounces one way and another way on another night. You just flush it and go."

Garza continues to walk batters at a troubling frequency, issuing three bases on balls for the third straight game. He's averaging 4.3 per nine innings after not finishing above 2.9 since 2009 (3.5).

He hasn't had great luck against Atlanta, either, going 0-3 with a 4.76 ERA in five matchups. The only teams Garza has faced more and hasn't beaten are the Los Angeles Angels (eight) and Washington (six).

The Brewers (15-26) failed to sweep Detroit on Wednesday, falling 5-2. The game was tied before Jonathan Broxton gave up three runs in the eighth inning - the same total Milwaukee allowed in taking the series' first two games.

It was a quiet offensive night with only six hits, though Ryan Braun remained productive, hitting his 10th home run and second in as many days. He has nine homers in his last 21 games while collecting 24 of his 28 RBIs, tying Paul Molitor for third on the club's all-time list (790).

The Braves (19-20) defeated Tampa Bay 2-1 on Wednesday. They had lost 12 of 13 when getting held to three runs or fewer.

"We didn't do much, but we did just enough. Hopefully, we keep doing just enough for the rest of the season," shortstop Andrelton Simmons told MLB's official website.

Atlanta has homered only twice in its last 11 games and now must rely on Julio Teheran (3-1, 4.33), who has had a difficult time keeping the ball in the park.

The right-hander has given up nine home runs over his last six starts while posting a 5.40 ERA. He hadn't allowed a homer in his first two games and won both, yielding two earned runs. Teheran was better Friday, though, limiting Miami to two runs - the only earned one came on a Giancarlo Stanton homer - over 5 2-3 innings.

He has surrendered one home run over 21 1-3 innings in three starts versus Milwaukee, going 1-2 with a 1.69 ERA. He received no run support in either loss. Braun is 1 for 7 against him.

Both clubs' top hitters have struggled against the opponent. Freddie Freeman, hitting .303, is at .185 in 25 career meetings with Milwaukee. Gerardo Parra (.306) is 5 for 32 over his last nine versus Atlanta, and he's 2 for 11 versus Teheran.

Nick Markakis is 9 for 24 in six games against the Brewers, though he's just 6 for 38 against Garza.

Atlanta won five of the last six meetings in 2014.
