| |  | WASHINGTON: WASHINGTON (AP) - Bryce Harper's reaction to the news that the Washington Nationals added Max Scherzer to an already-talented starting staff drew quite a lot of attention.
''I just started laughing,'' Harper famously said. ''I was like, `Where's my ring?'''
Yes, that pretty much sums up where the expectations are for the 2015 Nationals - as expressed by them and by others.
On the first day of full-squad workouts at spring training, reigning NL Manager of the Year Matt Williams posted these words of wisdom in the clubhouse: ''The road to the World Series begins today.''
''We're here to get to that ultimate goal,'' Williams said. ''We're not alone. There's 29 other teams that have the same thought. So that being said, I want to make sure that we understand that that's our goal. That is our goal: to be the last one standing at the end of it.''
The main reason many folks think the Nationals are capable of achieving that goal, even if the team has yet to win a playoff series, is the rotation.
Scherzer, the 2013 AL Cy Young Award winner with Detroit, came aboard with a $210 million contract, joining a group that led the majors in ERA last season - right-handers Stephen Strasburg, Jordan Zimmermann and Doug Fister, and lefty Gio Gonzalez.
''There's no break'' for an opposing team, new reliever Casey Janssen observed.
It's such a formidable quintet that a guy who won 15 games, had a sub-3.00 ERA and threw nearly 200 innings a year ago, Tanner Roark, is moving to the bullpen.
In 2014, the Nationals won a league-best 96 games and finished atop the underwhelming NL East by a whopping 17 games, but then bowed out in four games in a Division Series against the eventual champs, the San Francisco Giants. Washington's starting pitching wasn't the problem in the postseason; its bullpen and hitting were what led to a second quick playoff exit in three years.
And yet general manager Mike Rizzo allowed those two areas to lose important pieces, trading away the man he called ''maybe the best eighth-inning setup man in the history of the game,'' Tyler Clippard, and letting first baseman Adam LaRoche (team highs of 26 homers, 92 RBIs) leave via free agency.
The hope, presumably, is that hitters such as Harper, Ryan Zimmerman (who replaces LaRoche at first) and Wilson Ramos, who each missed significant chunks of last season, will deliver the numbers they're capable of producing, while opponents have a really hard time scoring much against all the aces Williams will send to the mound.
''It's hilarious having to go in there and face them. It's absolutely stupid,'' Harper said. ''We have the best staff in baseball. I don't care what anybody says.''
Actually, Bryce, that's exactly what pretty much everybody IS saying.
Here are other things to know about the Nationals, who open the season on April 6 at home against the New York Mets:
HEALTH MATTERS: Half of the everyday lineup - outfielders Jayson Werth and Denard Span (both recovering from offseason surgery), third baseman Anthony Rendon and new second baseman Yunel Escobar - missed extended periods of spring training, as did fourth outfielder Nate McClouth. Rendon, Span, Werth and McClouth might all miss opening day. ''You can be as good as you want on paper, but that doesn't mean anything until the end of the year,'' Scherzer said. ''We've got to stay healthy.''
MIGHTY `PEN?: Given their aspirations, October is what really matters for the Nationals, and Drew Storen blew save chances in the 2012 and 2014 playoffs. Still, the closer's job is his entering the season, and Clippard is no longer around to shut down foes in the eighth - or provide ninth-inning backup if needed. Worth watching: Will Aaron Barrett set aside the yips that hit him in the NLDS?
LAST HURRAH: A couple of homegrown franchise cornerstones, Zimmermann and shortstop Ian Desmond, can become free agents after the season, as can Span and Fister. Rizzo could try to sign one or more to long-term deals. He could trade one or more. Or he could decide to let things play out with this group, then move on next offseason. ''With this group of guys,'' Werth said, ''this might be it.'' | | MIAMI: MIAMI (AP) - Two transactions midway through spring training that drew little notice heralded significant progress for the Miami Marlins.
Top pitching prospects Jose Urena and Justin Nicolino were optioned to the minor leagues - moves reflecting the franchise's improved depth of talent. This season, for a change, the front office doesn't feel compelled to rush youngsters like Urena and Nicolino to the majors.
''In previous years they would probably already be in the big leagues,'' president of baseball operations Michael Hill said. ''We've really tried to change that, be fair to the player and allow them to have the necessary growing pains in the minor leagues so when they do get to the big leagues, they can hit the ground running.''
When Urena and Nicolino do reach the majors, they might be joining a contender. Following a busy offseason highlighted by the signing of Giancarlo Stanton to a record $325 million contract, Miami's expectations are unusually lofty.
The Marlins don't talk just about finishing above .500 for the first time since 2009. They want to end an 11-year playoff drought.
''I love the talent we've been able to assemble,'' Hill said. ''If we handle our business, I'm pretty excited about where that will lead.''
While Stanton draws the biggest headlines, it might be the Marlins' rotation that separates them from the pack. They enter the season with five solid starters, and that doesn't include ace Jose Fernandez, the 2013 NL Rookie of the Year, who is projected to return from elbow surgery at midseason.
Miami acquired Mat Latos and Dan Haren in offseason deals, and they join Henderson Alvarez, Jarred Cosart and Tom Koehler. Latos is 56-40 since 2010, and the others each won at least 10 games last year, with a combined record of 48-39. Newcomer David Phelps, who is 12-11 as a starter, provides depth and can also relieve.
''I like our rotation,'' manager Mike Redmond said. ''These guys have gone out and competed for a long time and have a lot of experience, which is nice.''
Other things to know about the baseball buzz building in South Florida:
RETURN ON INVESTMENT: Stanton appears poised for another big year after being knocked out of the 2014 NL MVP race when a beaning ended his season in September. He led the NL in slugging and homers despite missing the final 17 games.
During spring training batting practice, new teammate Phelps noted that Stanton hits balls to the opposite field farther than most players can pull them. And he doesn't just outslug everybody.
''We ran shuttles the first week of camp and I figured he was a good athlete,'' Phelps said. ''But I didn't expect him to be outrunning everybody, too.''
TRENDING UPWARD: Miami went 62-100 under Redmond two years ago, and then ended a streak of three consecutive last-place finishes in the NL East by going 77-85 in 2014. The 15-win improvement tied for the best in the National League by a 100-loss team since 1986.
Among the players still around from that young, awful 2013 team are Stanton, Fernandez, Alvarez, Koehler, left fielder Christian Yelich, center fielder Marcell Ozuna and shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria.
''The fun part is to see the excitement in guys now, and for them to talk about how far we've come in a short amount of time,'' Redmond said. ''As tough as it was at the time, I knew we would be better off for it, because we got some guys a lot of experience.''
STILL YOUNG: With the addition such veterans as Latos, Haren, third baseman Martin Prado, second baseman Dee Gordon and first baseman Michael Morse, the payroll is expected to be above $70 million. That's the highest for the Marlins since 2012, and an increase of about 50 percent from last year.
Even so, the Marlins remain young. Fernandez, Alvarez, Cosart, Stanton, Yelich, Ozuna and Hechavarria are all under 26. That creates a clubhouse environment foreign to Phelps, a right-hander acquired in a trade with the Yankees.
''It's a lot of young, talented players,'' said Phelps, 28, accustomed to being surrounded by the likes of Derek Jeter and CC Sabathia. ''It's really a breath of fresh air just to come in and have a core in place that is younger than me.''
Most of the Marlins have never played on a contending team, which raises some skepticism about their chances. But Alvarez predicted the Marlins will be playing games that matter late this season for a change.
''We're going to surprise a lot of people,'' he said. |

The highlight of Jordan Zimmermann's second straight All-Star season came when he pitched the first no-hitter in Washington in 83 years against Miami in the 2014 finale.
Off to rough start in 2015, the Nationals right-hander looks to get back on track while trying for another gem against the host Marlins on Friday night.
Thanks to a diving grab by former Washington left fielder Steven Souza Jr. on the final play of a 1-0 home victory Sept. 28, Zimmermann (1-2, 6.14 ERA) became the first major leaguer to toss a no-hitter in the nation's capital since the Senators' Bobby Burke in 1931.
"I thought there was no way this would ever happen," Zimmermann said after he struck out 10 and walked one.
After going 0-3 with a 4.81 ERA in his first six starts against the Marlins (5-11), Zimmermann is 7-0 with a 2.67 ERA in the last 11.
He opened this season by yielding a run in six innings of a 2-1 victory over the New York Mets, then gave up eight in 2 1-3 of a 9-4 loss at Boston on April 13. He was better five days later while allowing four runs - two earned - in 6 1-3 innings of a 5-3 loss to Philadelphia.
Though Zimmermann made progress, he also walked four.
"I have to clean that up and I'll do better next time," he told the Nationals' official website.
Washington (7-9) concluded a 4-3 homestand by dropping two straight to St. Louis but won eight of the final nine versus Miami in 2014, including five straight at Marlins Park - four by one run.
Ryan Zimmerman is 7 for 17 with three RBIs in the last four games and is apparently dealing with plantar fasciitis.
"Been bothering him for a while," manager Matt Williams said after Thursday's 4-1 defeat. "Pretty soon we're going to have to give him a break and sit him down."
That could come Friday considering Zimmerman's 3 for 13 with a home run versus Mat Latos (0-3, 10.24), who is trying to avoid dropping his first four starts for the second time.
The right-hander, who gave up seven runs in two-thirds of an innings in his Marlins debut April 7, lasted a season-high five and yielded two in Saturday's 5-4 defeat to the Mets.
Latos is 3-2 with a 2.66 ERA in seven starts against the Nationals.
Despite going 4-6 on its initial road trip, Miami won two of the three series and the last two games versus Philadelphia.
"We had a couple rough weeks," said veteran Martin Prado, who had three hits and four RBIs in Thursday's 9-1 rout. "We were swimming against the currents. Now, we are going with the flow, not trying to be a hero."
The Marlins hope their modest surge turns into something bigger.
"(Thursday) was a great day, and now we need to focus on (Friday)," said manager Mike Redmond, who failed to receive an endorsement from owner Jeffrey Loria at the beginning of the trip.
"Just go out and try to get better each day, and I think we've done that."
Miami's Adeiny Hechavarria is 4 for 23 against Zimmermann, but is batting .462 with nine RBIs in the last 10 games after going 1 for 22 in the first six.
