KEY GAME INFORMATION
HOUSTON: HOUSTON (AP) - The Houston Astros moved out of the major league basement last season.
Now the question is whether Jose Altuve and his teammates are ready to contend this year or if they still need a couple of seasons to complete their rebuild and get back to the postseason.
Owner Jim Crane is confident the time is now.
''This is our year,'' he said, adding that their goal is to make the playoffs.
The Astros made a 19-game improvement in 2014 to win 70 games and snap a streak of three straight 100-loss seasons. They beefed up a bullpen that struggled last year and added more pop to a lineup that was fourth in the majors with 163 homers in 2014 in an attempt to take another step in 2015.
''These guys are all professional baseball players and they all want to win,'' general manager Jeff Luhnow said. ''We're not going to set any limitations on them. It's up to them at this point. We've done our work for the offseason.''
The Astros blew 25 saves last season, a statistic that troubled Crane more than any other number associated with his team. His first order of business this offseason was to bring in players to get that number down this year.
To that end, Houston added relievers Luke Gregerson and Pat Neshek. Gregerson appeared in 72 games for the Athletics last season and posted a 2.12 ERA and Neshek saw action in 71 games for St. Louis in 2014 with a 1.87 ERA.
A lineup that already had power aplenty with Chris Carter, whose 37 homers tied for second in the majors last season, and George Springer, who hit 20 in just 78 games, now has more sluggers with the addition of Evan Gattis and Colby Rasmus. Gattis has hit 43 homers combined in his first two major league seasons and Rasmus has hit at least 22 home runs in two of the last three years.
That power is what excites first-year manager A.J. Hinch most about his team.
''We have a chance to be a dangerous lineup,'' Hinch said with a smile.
Some things to know about the 2015 Astros:
EXPECTATIONS FOR ALTUVE: Altuve became the first Astros player to win a batting title by hitting .341 last season. He set a team record with 225 hits, was third in the majors with 47 doubles, had 59 RBIs and tied for second in the league with 56 stolen bases.
So what does Luhnow expect the 24-year-old second baseman to do for an encore?
''He's going to be a .300 career hitter, which are few and far between,'' Luhnow said. ''So there's going to be years like with most of these great hitters where they hit .340 and years that they hit .305. In my mind Altuve is an elite major league hitter and we're going to see it year in and year out.''
SPRINGER'S SECOND YEAR: Springer, the 11th overall pick in the 2011 draft, hit .231 with 20 homers and 51 RBIs in 78 games as a rookie. He injured his left quadriceps on July 20 and he didn't play again. The Astros are eager to see what the right fielder can do in a full season.
''He's got a ton of potential,'' Hinch said. ''He's a dynamic player. He can do a lot of different things in a lot of different ways. Everybody sort of sits up in their seats when he comes up to bat. I think there's a chance for him to have impact in all (areas) of the game, which is hard to come by.''
CAN ROTATION BE CONSISTENT?: Dallas Keuchel (12-9, 2.93 ERA) and Collin McHugh (11-9, 2.73) had breakout seasons in 2014, but can they perform at that level in a second year to lead the rotation? Keuchel posted ERAs of over 5.00 in both of his first two seasons before being chosen this year's opening day starter with his work last year, and McHugh had ERAs of 7.59 and 10.04 in his first two years before his success in 2014.
ANOTHER NEW SKIPPER: Counting interim managers, Hinch is the seventh manager the Astros have had since 2009. He was hired just after last season following the firing of Bo Porter, who was let go near the end of his second season.
This is the second time the 40-year-old Hinch has led a team after he managed Arizona from May 2009 until July 2010, when he was fired after 31-48 start. He was the vice president of professional scouting for San Diego from 2010 until August.
SEATTLE: SEATTLE (AP) - Robinson Cano is one of the few on the Seattle Mariners roster who can speak with certainty about the playoffs. In his previous stop, Cano played in the postseason seven times and hoisted one World Series trophy.
When Cano looks at the roster the Mariners have put together for the 2015 season, he sees familiar traits.
''On paper we look like world champions,'' Cano said. ''But hopefully, God help us, we stay healthy and it's not how we look on paper, we have to go out and prove it every day.''
This time it's different for Seattle. Before the season begins the Mariners are viewed as favorites in the AL West.
It's been a rarity for most of Seattle's history for the Mariners to be the favorites and when they have been, they typically fell short. That's what makes this season equal parts exciting and concerning. They could be the team that reignites the fire in Seattle fans, or one that provides another disappointment.
''There's more of a buzz around the team from an outside perspective. Internally, we expected a lot out of ourselves last year and we did that for the most part, obviously coming one game short,'' third baseman Kyle Seager said. ''But this year it's a different feeling in the locker room. There's more of a confidence. There's more of a general trust in the guy next to you and confidence in the guy next to you.''
Cano's signing a year ago brought validity to what Seattle was trying to create. That was supplemented by the development of Seager into an All-Star and Gold Glove winner, and the best pitching staff in baseball led by AL Cy Young runner-up Felix Hernandez.
But it wasn't enough. The Mariners ended one-game short. Getting to 87 wins was a surprising achievement but left Seattle wanting more.
The Mariners have created a roster that has Cano optimistic about what Seattle can accomplish. Nelson Cruz, the major league leader in homers last season, adds punch and protection in the middle of the lineup. The Mariners upgraded their outfield with the additions of Justin Ruggiano and Seth Smith and the late signing of Rickie Weeks.
And while Hernandez remains the ace, Seattle's pitching staff could be even better because of youngsters James Paxton and Taijuan Walker.
''With the additions we made this offseason and guys getting that experience last year, being in a little bit of a race, I think this team's prepped and ready to make a run at the postseason,'' Paxton said.
Here are things to watch as Seattle looks to reach the postseason for the first time since 2001:
CRUZ CONTROL: The addition of Cruz is a massive upgrade for Seattle's offense. While with Baltimore, Cruz was the only hitter in baseball to reach 40 homers last season, and while that came in the friendly hitting confines of Camden Yards he's always been a strong hitter at Safeco Field. One of Cruz's biggest impacts is the trickle down on Seattle's lineup. He'll hit behind Cano and in front of Seager and no longer leaves the cleanup spot in Seattle's order a gaping hole.
GOOD TO BE THE KING: Hernandez is already driven by the desire to make the postseason. He may have gotten just a little more motivation by finishing second in the Cy Young voting to Cleveland's Corey Kluber. He set a major league record last season when he pitched 16 straight games of seven or more innings while allowing two earned runs or less. It was a brilliant stretch from May to early August, but wasn't good enough to get Seattle to the postseason or win the Cy Young.
PLATOON OR NO PLATOON: How manager Lloyd McClendon handles his situations in right and left field will be worth watching early in the season. Ultimately, it's a good thing for Seattle to have as many options as it does at those positions with Smith and Ruggiano in right field and Dustin Ackley and Weeks in left field. With the strengths of each player, it's likely Smith and Ackley will right-handed pitching and Weeks and Ruggiano against lefties. McClendon has said he doesn't view either situation as a platoon.
BEST BULLPEN: Fernando Rodney was the anchor of the best bullpen in baseball last year. He led baseball in saves with 48, but he was just part of what made Seattle successful late in games. Most of that bullpen crew is back, and for as good as Seattle's starters are expected to be, its relievers need to be equal to last season if the Mariners are going to match their expectations.

*Astros-Mariners Preview* =========================

By NICOLINO DIBENEDETTO STATS Writer

Houston (7-6) at Seattle (5-8), 10:10 p.m. EDT

The Houston Astros' Collin McHugh hasn't lost since July, and he's looking to beat the Seattle Mariners for a third time during his winning streak.

McHugh will try to continue that dominance and become the first Astros pitcher in 13 years to win 10 straight decisions Tuesday night in Seattle.

McHugh (2-0, 1.54 ERA) is 9-0 with a 1.74 ERA in 12 starts since being charged with a loss to Miami on July 27. The right-hander won his seventh straight start Wednesday, collecting 11 strikeouts while yielding one run in 5 2-3 innings of a 6-1 victory over Oakland.

"I had a pretty good breaking ball, which helped getting in two-strike counts," McHugh said. "You throw it down there and see if they chase."

A victory Tuesday would give McHugh the longest winning streak by an Astros pitcher since Wade Miller won 12 decisions in a row from July 7-Sept. 21, 2002.

McHugh's streak already includes yielding four runs in 14 innings while winning two meetings with the Mariners (5-8). He was terrific at Seattle on Sept. 9, allowing one hit over seven scoreless innings before giving up a solo homer to Logan Morrison and leaving after the eighth in a 2-1 win.

That's the only run he's allowed in 14 2-3 innings over two games - both wins - at Safeco Field.

This time, however, McHugh will try to quiet Nelson Cruz, Robinson Cano and Kyle Seager.

Cruz leads the majors with eight homers and 16 RBIs, and he's collected all of those while batting .474 during a nine-game hitting streak. Cano has a seven-game streak, during which he's hitting .448 while Seager is 7 for 11 with two doubles and four RBIs in three games.

"Cruz has been doing it from the get-go so thankfully me and Robbie are starting to get going," Seager said. "The impact of Cruz is huge. You can't pitch around Robbie and you have to be real careful with him."

Those three, however, are a combined 4 for 31 against McHugh, who has held Seager hitless in 13 at-bats with six strikeouts.

The middle of Seattle's order went 6 for 12 with four doubles and three RBIs on Monday, but was upstaged by Houston's Luis Valbuena's two homers and three RBIs as the Astros (7-6) won 7-5 in the series opener.

Valbuena is hitting .308 with five homers and seven RBIs in the last seven games.

The Mariners, who have dropped four of the last six at home, are giving the ball to Taijuan Walker (0-2, 17.18). The 22-year-old right-hander is considered one of the top young arms in baseball, but he's been hammered through two starts, surrendering 14 runs with six walks in 7 1-3 innings.

He struggled early Wednesday, giving up three runs in the first inning before allowing two more and being yanked after the fourth of a 5-2 road defeat to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

"His velocity was fine. He's just got to control the strike zone a little better," manager Lloyd McClendon said. "We've got to get better efforts from our starters. We've got to get deeper into ballgames. We've got a real good bullpen, but they won't be worth a darn if we keep running them out there."

Walker may feel rather comfortable facing the Astros since all three of his career wins have come against them. He has a 2.91 ERA with 23 strikeouts over 21 2-3 innings in those four contests.

Walker, though, has struggled with Jose Altuve, who is 5 for 10 with two doubles off him.

Altuve was 0 for 4 Monday, ending a nine-game hitting streak during which he had a .385 average.
