KEY GAME INFORMATION
TEXAS: When Yu Darvish pitched only one inning this spring before season-ending elbow surgery, the Texas Rangers were already off to an ominous start.
The Rangers lost their ace even before what they are still hoping will be a comeback season.
''There is no way to spin that, other than it's a tough deal for us. He's one of the best pitchers in the game,'' general manager Jon Daniels said this spring. ''That being said, it's one guy. It's not 17. Good teams and good organizations have had similar news at similar times before and found a way. That's got to be our mentality.''
Texas had 22 different players spend time on the disabled list last season, including Darvish missing the final seven weeks with elbow inflammation before needing Tommy John ligament-replacement surgery this spring.
The aching result for the Rangers was the American League's worst record (67-95) and their most losses since 1985, ending an impressive four-year run of 90-win seasons with their only two World Series appearances (2010-11).
Darvish was 10-7 and an All-Star again before getting sidelined last season.
As for the top of the rotation without him, the January trade to get local pitcher Yovani Gallardo proved even more important. Gallardo, who can be a free agent after this season, started the last five season openers for Milwaukee.
Derek Holland, who didn't pitch until September last season after knee surgery, had a strong finish. Shoulder soreness slowed the left-hander this spring, but that likely set him up to start the home opener April 10 against Houston, in the fifth game of the season.
Also among the injured in 2014 were slugger Prince Fielder and Shin-Soo Choo, the big offensive additions before last season.
Fielder had missed only one game the previous five seasons with Detroit and Milwaukee before being limited to only 42 games and three home runs in his Rangers debut because a herniated disk in his neck that required surgery. Choo played 123 games, but his on-base percentage dipped from .423 in 2013 for Cincinnati to .340 before operations late last season for a bone spur in his left elbow and torn cartilage in his left ankle.
''There's no telling what this ballclub can do,'' new manager Jeff Banister said. ''They've yet to have an opportunity to play together. Let's hope they get a really strong shot of playing together for 162-plus (games).''
Here are a few things to know about the Rangers, who open the season April 6 at Oakland:
CLOSING TIME: Neftali Feliz is back in his World Series role for the Rangers as their closer after an ill-fated and injury-plagued attempt to be a starter. The right-hander was 3-1 with a 3.16 ERA in eight games (seven starts) in 2012 before Tommy John surgery. Feliz was 2-1 with 13 saves in 14 chances with a 1.99 ERA in 30 relief appearances after rejoining the Rangers last July, just before Joakim Soria was traded.
BELTRE'S IMPACT: Third baseman Adrian Beltre is going into his 17th major league season, his fifth with the Rangers and signed through next season. ''He's the heart and soul of this club,'' Banister said. ''A shining light in the storm, that's what he was last year. ... Do yourself a favor and watch that last at-bat he put together in 2014.'' Determined not to be the final out of the season, Beltre went from an 0-2 count to getting a single on the third straight slider thrown after that.
LEFT OF CENTER: With pretty much every other defensive position set, Jake Smolinski and Ryan Ruo entered spring as candidates in left field. Both showed promising glimpses in short stints in their major league debuts the second half of last season. Ryan Ludwick, who made his major league debut with Texas in 2002 and played for five other teams the past decade, was a non-roster invitee who could play left. Michael Choice, who got 35 of his 55 outfield starts in left last year, was the early man out when optioned to the minors in mid-March. Choo moves from left to right after Alex Rios departed in free agency.
MISSING WORK: The 26 different DL stints for the Rangers last season amounted to 2,281 days lost. That was 833 more than Arizona, who had the second most, and more than double any other American League team.
ARIZONA: PHOENIX (AP) - Arizona's desert overhaul began last summer with the hire of Tony La Russa as chief baseball officer.
More hires followed: Dave Stewart as general manager, Joe Carter and De Jon Watson to front-office positions, Chip Hale as the new manager.
Now that the brain trust is in place, it's time to see what the new-look Diamondbacks can do on the field.
''I don't have a crystal ball. I just know we'll be competitive,'' La Russa said. ''I've said before, I'll be broken-hearted if we don't have a winning record this year.''
Arizona has fallen hard since winning the 2011 NL West crown, putting together a pair of .500 seasons before dropping to 64-98 a year ago, the worst record in baseball and second-worst in franchise history.
Some of it was injuries; the Diamondbacks lost three pitchers to Tommy John surgery and seemed to have every one of their top players get hurt at some point.
But La Russa and the rest of the front office also saw need for changes, which began during the trade deadline and continued during the offseason.
Gone are catcher Miguel Montero, third baseman Martin Prado, shortstop Didi Gregorius, along with pitchers Wade Miley and Brandon McCarthy.
Even with the losses, Arizona's lineup should be potent.
A.J. Pollock, Mark Trumbo and Paul Goldschmidt are all healthy after missing games last season and David Peralta returns in right field after a solid rookie season. Arizona also picked up Cuban slugger Yasmany Tomas, who has potentially game-changing power.
But, as has been the case in the desert, pitching will be the big question
Arizona traded Miley to Boston and its opening day starter will be Josh Collmenter, an over-the-top-throwing right-hander who has bounced between the bullpen and the rotation during his four big-league seasons.
Patrick Corbin and Bronson Arroyo were part of the rotation last season, but both underwent Tommy John surgery and aren't expected to return until at least midseason.
The Diamondbacks picked up right-hander Rubby De La Rosa in the Miley trade and right-hander Jeremy Hellickson in another deal with Tampa Bay. Arizona also signed 21-year-old Cuban right-hander Yoan Lopez, who is competing for a spot in the rotation, and has right-handers Chase Anderson and Trevor Cahill back from last season.
For all the potential the Diamondbacks have with their bats, it won't matter much if the pitchers don't come through.
A few more things to look for from the 2015 Arizona Diamondbacks:
GOLDY SHINES: Goldschmidt was having another stellar season in 2014 when he was derailed by a broken hand at the start of August. Before his injury, the All-Star first baseman had become one of the best power hitters in the game and was runner-up in the NL MVP race in 2013, when he hit .302 with 26 homers and 125 RBIs. He felt good throughout spring training and expected to be back giving the Diamondbacks some consistent pop in the lineup.
REPLACING MONTERO: Arizona took a gamble during the offseason by trading Montero to the Chicago Cubs. A two-time All-Star, Montero was a steadying influence in the clubhouse and behind the plate, not to mention a power bat in the lineup. Now that he's gone, the Diamondbacks will turn to 31-year-old Tuffy Gosewisch, who has 179 career at-bats and didn't break into the majors until 2013 after eight years in the minors.
ADDING TOMAS: The Diamondbacks made a bit of an international splash by signing Tomas to a six-year, $68 million contract. The dilemma now is to figure out where to play him and how quickly he can adjust to playing in the big leagues. Arizona would like to play the 24-year-old at third base, but could move him to the outfield if he can't make the transition to a position he's never played. Tomas has plenty of raw ability and is young, so the Diamondbacks have high hopes for him - wherever he ends up playing.
HUDSON'S RETURN: Daniel Hudson was a consistent performer on Arizona's staff before having Tommy John surgery each of the past two seasons. He returned last September, pitching in the bullpen. The right-hander is expected to start the season in the bullpen, but could find a place back in the rotation if he remains healthy.

*Rangers-Diamondbacks Preview* ==============================

By JACK CASSIDY STATS Writer

Texas (5-8) at Arizona (7-6), 9:40 p.m. EDT

For a team many figured to be a bottomfeeder in the NL West, the Arizona Diamondbacks have jumped out to solid start while playing only divisional opponents.

Returning home following a successful road trip, the Diamondbacks will venture outside of the division for a two-game series with the Texas Rangers, who enter Tuesday night's meeting fresh off a tough defeat.

Arizona did not earn its seventh win in 2014 until the 25th game, but it took three of four from San Francisco over the weekend to improve to 7-6.

Paul Goldschmidt hit his fifth home run in Sunday's 5-1 win and has three homers and nine RBIs during a seven-game hitting streak.

"I've been able to have some success," Goldschmidt said. "You never know when that's going to change. It could be a terrible series next time. I just try to get a good pitch to hit, hit it hard and keep it simple."

Arizona ranks near the top of MLB with 4.62 runs per game, a category it finished 25th in last season (3.80).

Chase Anderson (0-0, 4.09 ERA) will get the start for the Diamondbacks after allowing two runs and eight hits in six innings Wednesday at San Diego. That outing began a stretch where Arizona's starters have posted a 2.06 ERA in five games.

Texas (5-8) turns to Nick Martinez (2-0, 0.00), who will be looking to pitch deep into the game considering his team's fatigued bullpen. The Rangers used five pitchers Sunday after Ross Detwiler lasted 2 1-3 innings, and those relievers couldn't hold a five-run lead heading into the seventh.

Tanner Scheppers allowed three runs in the eighth and closer Neftali Feliz blew the save in an 11-10 defeat at Seattle. Feliz may be unavailable after he threw 47 pitches, his most in 197 career relief appearances.

"I felt great," Feliz told MLB's official website. "I was concentrating on doing my job. The outcome wasn't what I wanted but I'm still going to hold my head up high."

Martinez has certainly proved himself capable of extended starts, going seven innings in each of his first two. He has allowed one unearned run and opponents are hitting .191 off the right-hander, which ranks lowest among Texas' starters.

After posting a 4.90 ERA in 24 starts last season, Martinez credits his success to the improvement of his fastball.

"Just attack with the fastball, in and out, up and down, change speeds when I have to," Martinez said. "It's something I worked on a lot this offseason. I had a small mechanical issue that I was able to fix, and I'm zoned in, able to hit my spots consistently."

Texas is 19-10 in the all-time series but was swept in a doubleheader in its last visit to Arizona on May 27, 2013.

Prince Fielder, who tops the Rangers with a .385 average and is tied for the team lead with six RBIs, is a career .300 hitter with 10 homers in 43 games against Arizona.
