| |  | BALTIMORE: BALTIMORE (AP) - For the first time in 17 years, the Baltimore Orioles open a new baseball season as defending AL East champions.
The Orioles can only hope for better results than in 1998, when they followed a wire-to-wire run to the division crown with a 79-83 flop - launching a franchise-record run of 14 straight losing seasons.
Although Baltimore lost slugger Nelson Cruz, Gold Glove right fielder Nick Markakis and setup man Andrew Miller from a club that last year went 96-66 and advanced to the AL Championship Series, manager Buck Showalter has no intention of disappointing a fan base that has embraced a team coming off its second playoff appearance in three seasons.
''They come to Camden to watch us win,'' Showalter said. ''There's no more passionate, sincere group of fans than we have. Nothing would kick me in the chest more than for us to regress. I want to keep going forward.''
Baltimore made only one significant offseason acquisition, picking up outfielder Travis Snider in a trade with Pittsburgh. The big question is, do the Orioles still have enough good players to stay atop the AL East?
''It definitely stinks to lose Markakis, what he brought to the clubhouse, and Cruz, what he brought to the field. But we've got to move on,'' said Steve Pearce, who's coming off the best year of his career. ''You look around the locker room and there's a lot of talent here. All our pitching's returned, so we still have a really good team.''
The Orioles are counting on third baseman Manny Machado and catcher Matt Wieters to bounce back from injury-shortened seasons and for first baseman Chris Davis to regain the form he showed in 2013 before slumping miserably last year.
None of the three were available in the postseason, when the Orioles swept Detroit in the division playoff before being bounced in four games by the Kansas City Royals.
Davis' absence will extend into opening day, on April 6 in Tampa Bay, when he concludes his 25-game suspension for using a banned amphetamine. Wieters is expected to start the season in the disabled list as he continues his recovery from elbow ligament surgery, but at least Machado appears on target to make up for lost time.
The offense will be a work in progress, but the Orioles hope they won't need heavy hitting to back a starting rotation that remains entirely intact. Chris Tillman, Wei-Yin Chen, Bud Norris and Miguel Gonzalez combined to go 54-29 last year, and the foursome could get some help from right-hander Ubaldo Jimenez, who's looked good in spring training after stumbling in his Orioles debut last year.
The bullpen will be anchored by Zach Britton, who had 37 saves in 41 tries during his first season as a closer.
Some things to know about the 2015 Orioles:
TOP OF THE LINEUP: Alejandro De Aza is expected to take over for Markakis as the leadoff hitter. De Aza is faster than Markakis and had a .341 on-base percentage after being obtained from the White Sox before the trade deadline.
''I will just let the game dictate what to do,'' he said.
What De Aza needs to do is get on base ahead of Machado, Davis and cleanup hitter Adam Jones.
DAVIS SEEKS A FRESH START: Slowed by a muscle strain near his rib cage, frustrated by defensive shifts and embarrassed by his suspension, Davis is raring to go in 2015.
''I'm in such a different situation this year than I was last year, having been off for a month and a half more than these guys,'' Davis said.
He says his teammates have forgiven him for using Adderall, which led to his untimely suspension.
''The guys are just ready to move on and focus on what we need to accomplish this year,'' Davis said.
SNIDER STEPS IN: With Markakis gone, Snider will attempt to fill the void in right field.
He hit .264 with 13 homers, 15 doubles and 38 RBIs in 140 games with Pittsburgh last season.
''I'm not here to replace Nick Markakis, but to be another man on this roster and to come out here every single day with the goal of getting better,'' Snider said.
MACHADO CONFIDENT: After playing only 82 games last year, Machado is ready to go after knee surgery.
''I feel great,'' the 2013 All-Star said. ''I'm doing everything. I'm stealing bases and hitting the ball well, playing good defense, doing everything I've got to do to get ready for the year.'' | | BOSTON: BOSTON (AP) - A revamped lineup and change in attitude has the Boston Red Sox looking to repeat a feat they performed just two seasons ago when they went from worst to World Series champions.
Like the hip-hop song they blasted in their locker room after the 2013 division and World Series titles were clinched in Fenway Park, the Red Sox started at the bottom.
They've carried the theme over this season.
''There's a good vibe going around,'' said first baseman Mike Napoli, who rallies spirits in the clubhouse by growing beards with teammates. ''It feels a little like 2013 in here. We're just having fun.''
During this past offseason, GM Ben Cherington looked to grow a weak offense that finished 11th in the AL in scoring.
Cherington spent $88 million to sign Hanley Ramirez, who began in the organization's minor league system before stints with Miami and Los Angeles, and signed third baseman Pablo Sandoval to a five-year, $95 million deal.
It was a quick fix for a lineup that lacked pop besides another strong season by Big Papi.
''This has a chance to be a lineup that doesn't give the opposition too many breathers or take a hitter off - so to speak,'' manager John Farrell said. ''There's the ability to do some damage up and down the lineup.''
The 39-year old Ortiz posted a .263 average with 35 homers and 104 RBIs last season, his eighth time in 12 reaching 30/100 with the club.
The revised order still leaves the question of how Red Sox starting pitching will hold up.
Cherington moved quickly after left-hander Jon Lester opted not to return, signing instead with the Cubs.
The GM acquired right-hander Rick Porcello from Detroit for slugger Yoenis Cespedes, traded for lefty Wade Miley and signed free agent Justin Masterson, who was coming off an injury-plagued season. The trio is expected to join Clay Buchholz and Joe Kelly.
Some have questioned whether they have a top-of-the-rotation type. Buchholz thinks they'll feed off the doubters and strive.
''I think we're going to fly under the radar for the most part, which I think is a good thing,'' he said. ''At some point they're going to say, `They've got their stuff in order and they've got a pretty good staff.'''
They aren't hiding from how bad last season ended after going 71-91 and finishing 25 games out in the AL East.
''Our record says what we were, and that wasn't good,'' Farrell said.

A FUN TRIO
Just a few days into spring training, Ortiz dubbed himself, Ramirez and Sandoval as ''The Three Amigos.'' The three are expected to bring both pop and some interesting times in the clubhouse.
''This will be a lively group and, I think, a fun one to be part of,'' Farrell said. ''I think the biggest thing is, they love to play the game. You can see the joy come out of them when they do well, and there's no question they'll draw from one another - the confidence they'll draw from one another.''

NO STICKER SHOCK HERE
The Red Sox pledged more than $180 million to bring in Ramirez and Sandoval.
''The proven power hitter obviously has a hefty price tag attached to it,'' Farrell said.
Ramirez hit 13 homers with 71 RBIs. Sandoval had 16 with 73 and won a World Series with San Francisco.

KEEP QUIET AND PLAY
Shane Victorino, who had his 2014 season cut short by back surgery, isn't about to try to analyze what went wrong last season. He feels like it's time to move on and make up for it.
''You try to be the best team you can be,'' he said. ''Don't want to sit here and talk about this and talk about that. You've got to go out there and do it. There's no other way of looking at it.''

KEEP AN EYE ON THIS
Ortiz didn't want to listen to any new rules about speeding up the game by having batters keep one foot in the box in between pitches. He even joked that he'll run out of money if he's fined.
''This game has been going on for over 100 years,'' he said. ''It's the nature of the game. I don't care who you are, you're not going to change. The pitch comes through, you come out of the box, you come back in.'' |

Baltimore (5-4) at Boston (6-3), 4:05 p.m. EDT
Clay Buchholz and Chris Tillman were excellent in their first outings of the season, but must bounce back from abysmal showings in their second starts.
They match up Saturday as the Boston Red Sox host the Baltimore Orioles.
These teams were a combined 0 for 9 with runners in scoring position Friday prior to Xander Bogaerts' game-winning single in the ninth, driving home Mike Napoli in a 3-2 victory. Bogaerts is 14 for 31 (.452) with seven RBIs in his last seven for Boston (7-3), which avoided its first consecutive losses.
Baltimore (5-5) was held to less than four runs for only the second time.
Buchholz (1-1, 7.84 ERA) was rocked for a career-high 10 runs and nine hits, including two homers over 3 1-3 innings of a 14-4 road loss to the New York Yankees on Sunday. Buchholz, who threw seven scoreless innings in his first start against Philadelphia, was tagged for seven of those runs in the first inning.
"I'm not going to let one start affect the way I feel about the year that we're going to have or how I feel," he told MLB's official website. "They've got a good lineup."
Though the right-hander credited his opponents, the Yankees are hitting .196 outside of that game.
Buchholz had won four consecutive starts versus Baltimore before losing his only matchup last year, giving up six runs and seven hits in 2 1-3 innings of a 7-6 home defeat April 21. It was his first loss to the Orioles in seven starts.
Buchholz, who is making his home debut, was 3-7 with a 6.64 ERA at Fenway Park in 2014.
Tillman (1-1, 7.71) limited Tampa Bay to one run on a solo shot over 6 2-3 innings in a 6-2 win in Baltimore's opener, but was shelled in a 10-7 loss to Toronto on Sunday. The right-hander gave up seven runs and seven hits, including two home runs, in 2 2-3 innings. He has historically struggled earlier in games with opponents hitting .283 his first time through the lineup compared to .230 in all other trips.
"Chris, like a lot of good pitchers, sometimes struggles a bit to find their stuff early, and then they get in sync," manager Buck Showalter said. "We've seen it a lot with him."
Walks have been a problem with Tillman issuing six free passes in 9 1-3 innings. Boston is drawing a walk every 9.2 plate appearances, ranking among the majors' leaders.
Tillman owns a 7-3 record and 2.69 ERA in 16 career starts against the Red Sox. David Ortiz, whose batting average fell to .171 after an 0-for-3 performance Friday, is 3 for 27 with six strikeouts versus Tillman.
It remains to be seen if Buchholz and the Red Sox have retaliation on their mind after Friday's events, though it doesn't seem likely. Baltimore starter Ubaldo Jimenez was ejected after hitting Pablo Sandoval in the right shoulder. No warning had been issued to either team, though Sandoval took out second baseman Jonathan Schoop earlier on a hard slide.
Showalter and Jimenez both said they were surprised by the ejection, as was Boston manager John Farrell.
"Every time somebody slides hard, that's what you're supposed to do," Showalter said. "Nobody gets mad."
Adam Jones is 13 for 25 during a seven-game hitting streak while Travis Snider is 1 for 17 against Buchholz with nine strikeouts.
