KEY GAME INFORMATION
HOUSTON: HOUSTON (AP) - Coming off three straight 100-loss seasons, the Houston Astros are confident they'll be better this year.
How much? They aren't putting a number on that. But after setting a franchise record with a whopping 111 defeats, they have a simple target.
''It's our goal to be the most improved team in major league baseball (and) I believe ... we have the group together and we can actually accomplish that,'' second-year manager Bo Porter said.
There are several reasons why the Astros are certain they can improve. They brought in several established players this offseason to pair with the many young players who got their first significant playing time last season. They also could get some reinforcements soon from top prospects who are inching closer to being major league ready.
General manager Jeff Luhnow's rebuilding plan has already boosted Houston's minor league system from the worst in baseball to one of the best. He expects that work to start paying dividends this season in the majors.
''We have a young team. We're still going to make some mistakes,'' he said. ''Our young players have improved but still need some development. We brought in some veterans to help stabilize the team this year. We're going to see a big improvement as a result of those two dynamics.''
TEXAS: ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - The Texas Rangers are already hurting significantly even before the start of a new season.
In a span of three days the week before opening day, the Rangers scratched ace Yu Darvish from that scheduled start because of neck stiffness, and found out they would be without second baseman Jurickson Profar and catcher Geovany Soto for 10 to 12 weeks each because of injuries.
Sure, the Rangers know there are going to be injuries during the season.
''We just didn't expect it to be all at this point,'' general manager Jon Daniels said.
The Rangers, after missing the playoffs last year for the first time in four seasons, already knew they would be missing lefty starters Matt Harrison and Derek Holland to start the season.
At least Harrison, who had a mild setback early in camp after his back issues last season, should return within the first month. Holland could miss at least half the season because of left knee surgery after being tripped by his dog on stairs in his home in January.
The only three position players remaining from the Rangers' last World Series in 2011 also missed games this spring with lesser nagging issues. But shortstop Elvis Andrus, third baseman Adrian Beltre and designated hitter Mitch Moreland should all be in the lineup Monday against Philadelphia.
After missing the playoffs for the first time in four years and scoring their fewest runs (730) in a full season since 1992, the Rangers' two most significant offseason moves were to improve their offense.
They got durable slugger Prince Fielder from Detroit by trading Ian Kinsler, a move that cleared the way Profar to be an everyday player. Free agent outfielder Shin-Soo Choo was signed to a seven-year deal - the same time left on Fielder's contract - to take over the leadoff spot.
Only Mike Trout (564) and two-time AL MVP Miguel Cabrera (562) reached base more the past two season than Choo (556) and Fielder (542), who has the longest active streak in the majors playing in 505 consecutive regular-season games - and 809 of 810 the past five years.
''I just want Prince to be Prince,'' said manager Ron Washington, starting his eighth season in Texas. ''I just want him to do what he does, and let everyone else does what they do, and everything will work out.''

*Astros-Rangers Preview* ========================

By TAYLOR BECHTOLD STATS Writer

Houston (69-87) at Texas (62-93), 8:05 p.m. EDT

Although they're heading toward their worst season in nearly 30 years, the Texas Rangers are enjoying their best stretch under interim manager Tim Bogar.

Jose Altuve, meanwhile, is having an exciting finish while trying to provide the Houston Astros with a franchise first.

The AL-worst Rangers look to win their 10th in 11 games Tuesday night, while Altuve continues chasing a batting title as this three-game set resumes in Arlington.

Texas (63-93) is set to post its most losses since going 62-99 in 1985, but the club will avoid its first 100-loss season since 1973 after Monday's series-opening 4-3 win.

"It puts a big smile on my face, just to know there's no three digits in our loss column," said Bogar, who is 10-6 since Ron Washington resigned. "But other than that, we know as an organization we're not a team that's a 100-loss team."

The Rangers have averaged 6.5 runs while hitting .322 with 19 doubles in their last eight games. Guilder Rodriguez had his first two hits Monday following 13 years in the minors, while fellow rookie Rougned Odor delivered a three-run triple.

Altuve had an RBI double, keeping his MLB-leading average at .345. He's 23 for 51 (.451) over his last 12 games and leads Detroit's Victor Martinez (.334) by a comfortable margin in his quest to become the first batting champ in Houston's 52-year history.

The All-Star already owns the Astros' single-season hits record and his 220 are the most by a second baseman since Charlie Gehringer's 227 in 1936. He's batting .373 versus Texas in 2014 and is 4 for 7 with three doubles when facing Nick Martinez.

Martinez (4-11, 4.85 ERA) hasn't given up more than two earned runs in his past four outings, going 1-1 with a 2.74 ERA. The rookie right-hander, however, is still 0-6 with a 7.28 mark in his eight home starts.

He'll try to build on his first win since Aug. 20 after allowing two runs over 5 2-3 innings in Thursday's 7-2 victory at Oakland.

"Every win is big for a starter, especially when they have been a little scarce this year," Martinez told MLB's official website.

Martinez surrendered two runs over five innings in a 6-2 win at Minute Maid Park on Aug. 10, but did not get a decision Aug. 31 when he allowed one run over 5 1-3 in the Astros' 3-2 home victory.

Matt Dominguez is 4 for 6 with two RBIs off Martinez, but Chris Carter has gone 0 for 6 with two strikeouts. Robbie Grossman is 8 for 20 in his last five games after finishing with two hits Monday.

The Astros (69-88) will try to avoid their sixth loss in eight games as they give the ball to Brett Oberholtzer (5-12, 4.39).

After going 1-3 with a 7.00 ERA over his previous five starts, the left-hander put in a strong effort Wednesday. He allowed two runs over a season-high 7 2-3 innings, but didn't get any help from the offense in a 2-0 home loss to Cleveland.

Oberholtzer received only one run of support while going 0-1 with a 1.93 ERA in his first two starts versus Texas this season before the Rangers tagged him for a career-high seven runs over 4 1-3 innings in a 13-6 home loss Aug. 29.

Adrian Beltre is 6 for 10 with two doubles and two RBIs versus Oberholtzer the past two seasons.
