KEY GAME INFORMATION
ARIZONA: PHOENIX (AP) - The season had not even started when the Arizona Diamondbacks took a loss.
A day before boarding the plane for their season opener in Australia, the Diamondbacks learned scheduled opening-day starter Patrick Corbin had a partially torn ligament in his pitching elbow and might need season-ending surgery.
Arizona went 21-8 in the young left-hander's starts last season, more than a quarter of the victories for a team that went 81-81 for the second year in a row. The Los Angeles Dodgers celebrated their NL West title by splashing around in Arizona's Chase Field swimming pool.
Arizona retooled during the offseason by adding power (Mark Trumbo), a veteran starter (Bronson Arroyo) and a young closer (Addison Reed). Even with the loss of Corbin, the Diamondbacks feel they have the components to contend for at least a wild-card berth.
''They really want it,'' catcher Miguel Montero said. ''They're hungry for something, and that's a good feeling. I think last year we were a little bit more laid back. This year the guys are hungry, and that's a good thing.''
Trumbo noticed a positive attitude right from the start of spring training.
''That's the personality of the guys here and that plays really well for the course of a long season,'' he said. ''You've got to have guys that play the game right way, but play it with a little bit of a chip on their shoulder and bring it every day.''
MINNESOTA: MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - The number is staggering. In the past three years, the Minnesota Twins have lost 291 games. Ninety-nine in 2011. Ninety-six each of the last two seasons.
A team that was once viewed as a model for succeeding and competing with modest financial resources has been an afterthought for too long now. They have finished last in the AL Central twice and were fourth last season.
So the Twins shed their frugal ways in the offseason, shelling out $73 million to bring in Ricky Nolasco and Phil Hughes to bolster a lagging rotation. They also brought back manager Ron Gardenhire on a two-year deal and moved Joe Mauer from catcher to first base in an effort to protect their franchise player from injury.
''They made a statement: `We don't want to see this again. We don't want to go through this again this summer,''' Gardenhire said.
The Twins said goodbye to longtime first baseman Justin Morneau late last season when general manager Terry Ryan traded him to the Pirates in a stretch-run deal. There weren't many other changes to an offense that has struggled to score runs, but the upgrades to the rotation have given the holdovers some peace of mind that they won't have to score seven runs a game to have a chance to win.
''It's night and day to be honest with you. Terry went out and spent some money on some good arms in Nolasco and Hughes,'' second baseman Brian Dozier said. ''Hughes had a bad year last year but is an All-Star pitcher and I think moving to this park will help him a lot. I think just getting out of New York to be honest with you. ... So we needed to address our pitching staff and Terry did that, and I'm happy about it.''

*Diamondbacks-Twins Preview* ============================

By KEVIN CHROUST STATS Writer

Arizona (62-94) at Minnesota (66-89), 8:10 p.m. EDT

Andrew Chafin has probably pitched well enough to win each of his two big league starts, but Arizona Diamondbacks hitters haven't given him much to work with.

They'll try to change that Tuesday night in Minnesota against a struggling Twins pitching staff.

Arizona (63-94) used a five-run fifth to propel it to Monday's 6-2 win and end a six-game losing streak and 10-game road skid.

A.J. Pollock went 3 for 5 and is batting .349 over his last 22 games, while Mark Trumbo hit his third home run in two games. The first baseman has 15 RBIs in his last nine games.

"You get some results it helps you be more confident and he's swinging the bat pretty dangerously right now," manager Kirk Gibson said.

The Diamondbacks will now try for consecutive road wins for just the second time since June 28.

Chafin (0-0, 1.64 ERA) has issued as many walks as he has allowed hits - six - in two major league starts. He's still searching for his first win, though he's held opponents to a .171 average and been given two runs of support.

The left-hander returned to the Diamondbacks for Wednesday's 4-2 loss to San Francisco as he surrendered two runs and three hits while walking four in six innings.

"I guess you could say maybe I was trying too hard to be too fine and precise with things," Chafin told MLB's official website. "I just went back to going out there and throwing it and trusting things, and that helps a bit."

His first start came in an AL ballpark as he held Cleveland to three hits in five innings of a 1-0 win on Aug. 13.

He'll now try to add to Minnesota's woes after the Twins (66-90) reached 90 losses for a fourth straight season Monday with a third consecutive defeat.

"It's been a terrible year," Monday starter Ricky Nolasco said. "Just trying to finish healthy."

Since Aug. 22, Twins starters have a 5.67 ERA and .308 opponents' batting average, and Kyle Gibson has contributed to the problems.

Gibson (12-11, 4.64) earned a win in his last start as he allowed four runs in six innings of Wednesday's 8-4 victory over Detroit. Since the start of August, he's 3-3 with a 6.22 ERA in nine starts. He's also 0-4 with a 7.59 ERA in four interleague starts.

The right-hander hasn't faced Arizona, but Trumbo is 1 for 2 with a home run off him.

Aaron Hicks returned to the Twins' lineup Monday after sitting two games with back stiffness, but Eduardo Escobar remains out with a right shoulder injury.

Manager Ron Gardenhire is using the series against another non-contender to make some lineup changes. Joe Mauer and Brian Dozier weren't in Monday's lineup.

"Those guys have been playing every day, so we're going to try to use these games to mix up the lineups," Gardenhire told MLB's official website. "(Josmil) Pinto will be in there catching tomorrow. So we're just going to mix in guys before we play four big ones against Detroit at the end. We'll throw our bullets at them as best we possibly can."

Arizona's Aaron Hill dislocated his right pinky finger Monday and is day to day.
