KEY GAME INFORMATION
SAN FRANCISCO: SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - From every slot in a talented, experienced rotation to the back end of the bullpen and in between, to the starting fielders and the role players on the bench, it's hard to find a member of the San Francisco Giants pleased with his 2013 season.
A year after winning the World Series, the Giants finished 10 games under .500, third in the NL West and they missed the playoffs.
''We don't even have to have the conversation, a lot of the guys know it,'' right-hander Matt Cain said. ''We didn't pitch the way that we wanted to.''
As the Giants begin a new year, they will try to keep up with the big-spending Los Angeles Dodgers and regain the grip they had on the NL West when the club won World Series championships in 2010 and `12 - even if everybody expects the Dodgers to be the team to beat.
''You do try to reflect back and try to learn from what happened last year and how you can get better,'' manager Bruce Bochy said. ''You move forward, that's what we had to do. There are some things we'll talk about in the spring, mistakes that we made last year. Also, hopefully guys come in with an attitude, that they weren't happy with what happened the year before and want to get back on track.''
Buster Posey certainly doesn't want to spend too much time thinking about last season.
''That's probably how everybody feels. There's a bad taste in a lot of guys' mouths,'' Posey said. ''We want to come out and focus on winning ballgames.''
LA DODGERS: LOS ANGELES (AP) - The Dodgers have spent big bucks on their roster, ramping up World Series expectations right along with the payroll. Now they want to produce results.
They'll get the chance starting Saturday in Australia, where they open the season against NL West rival Arizona.
With a payroll in the range of $225 million-plus, the Dodgers have laid the groundwork to get to their first World Series title since 1988, when they won the title. They came up short last year, losing to St. Louis in six games in the NL championship series.
''The expectations going in this time are realistic. We're a talented club and we're capable,'' said manager Don Mattingly, who signed a three-year extension in January.
The Dodgers want to avoid the poor start they had last season, when key players were injured and the team had to rally to get back into the division race. They eventually won the title by 11 games over the Diamondbacks.
''We need to be more consistent,'' Mattingly said. ''I see it as winning every series and you'll be in pretty good shape. The next thing you know, you're 20 games over .500.''
First baseman Adrian Gonzalez is looking to follow up his strong season last year, while shortstop Hanley Ramirez, who was injured in the NL championship series, will be playing to set himself up for impending free agency.

*Giants-Dodgers Preview* ========================

By JEFF MEZYDLO STATS Senior Writer

San Francisco (85-71) at Los Angeles (89-68), 10:10 p.m. EDT

While the Los Angeles Dodgers seem to bring out the best in Madison Bumgarner, his San Francisco Giants have done the same for Zack Greinke in 2014.

As Bumgarner attempts to win his fourth consecutive road start against the Dodgers and propel his club toward the postseason, Greinke looks to improve to 5-0 against the Giants this season.

After totaling four runs while being swept in three games at San Diego over the weekend, San Francisco (85-71) bounced back by improving to 6-2 at Dodger Stadium this season with a 5-2, 13-inning victory Monday. Tied with Pittsburgh for the wild-card lead, the Giants are 3 1/2 games behind the playoff-bound Dodgers (89-68) with two left in the season series.

"This was a very important game obviously for us and it would've been a tough one not to win," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said.

San Francisco can join Los Angeles in the postseason Tuesday with a win and a Milwaukee loss at Cincinnati.

"That's a good club over there. They haven't went away all year," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. "We don't ever expect them to quit."

The Giants should feel even more confident behind Bumgarner (18-9, 2.91 ERA), who is 7-2 with a 1.90 ERA as a starter at Chavez Ravine, including 2-0 this year.

"It's not hard to get up for the Dodgers series, especially the circumstances we're in," said Bumgarner, who is 11-4 with a 2.39 ERA as a starter against the Giants' archrival and has the second-most wins of any active pitcher against them.

Since the start of the 2012 season, Bumgarner is 7-2 with a 1.61 ERA against the Dodgers. He allowed three hits and struck out nine over seven innings of a 9-0 home victory Sept. 12.

The left-hander is 5-0 while San Francisco has won his last six starts overall, and is 6-1 with a 1.80 ERA in his last nine outings. He followed this month's gem versus Los Angeles by giving up two runs in six innings while not factoring in the decision of a 4-2 victory at Arizona on Wednesday.

"He's always tough against everybody," Mattingly told MLB's official website.

"He's the kind of guy, you just try to stay with him, keep the game close and get his pitch count up, because he can be a little erratic."

Greinke (15-8, 2.76), meanwhile, has a 1.38 ERA while winning each of his four starts against the Giants in 2014. He allowed no runs and four hits in a second straight start at AT&T Park while lasting six innings of a 17-0 rout Sept. 13 to improve to 4-0 with a 1.93 ERA in six career outings versus San Francisco.

The right-hander, who is 2-0 with a 2.37 ERA in three starts versus San Francisco at Dodger Stadium, needs to be sharper after he followed his latest successful outing against the Giants by giving up four runs in five innings while not factoring in the decision of an 8-4 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Thursday.

Though Hunter Pence and Pablo Sandoval are each 2 for 11 versus Greinke this season, Buster Posey is 4 for 9 against him in 2014.

Yasiel Puig is 4 for 11 with a home run versus Bumgarner this year.

Puig hit .419 during Los Angeles' recent 6-4 road trip, but after going 0 for 4 on Monday is 4 for 40 with nine strikeouts in his last 11 at home.
