KEY GAME INFORMATION
PITTSBURGH: PITTSBURGH (AP) - The roars have faded. The giddiness of ending 21 years of futility and coming with a game of the National League championship series, too.
The Pittsburgh Pirates are in some ways just another NL contender these days. That dark cloud of two decades of losing is gone after a remarkable 94-68 surge and the playoff berth that came along with it in 2013.
Now the franchise needs to figure out what to do with the rest of its life. For three seasons a club that was a laughingstock when manager Clint Hurdle took over in December 2010 has slowly made inroads to relevance.
Suddenly, the ''World Series or bust'' attitude owner Bob Nutting has espoused for years doesn't seem so laughable anymore.
Press reigning NL Manager of the Year Clint Hurdle on what his team can possibly do for an encore despite a relatively quiet offseason and he responds with his usual eternal optimism.
''Excellence is verb, not a noun,'' Hurdle said. ''You're going to continue to push forward. Our goal is to win a sixth world championship. The fact is, we haven't won an LCS or a division series. We need to maintain our focus on the things we need to do.''
ATLANTA: ATLANTA (AP) - For the Atlanta Braves, spring training turned into a matter of survival.
No wonder they're so eager to get the season going.
The defending NL East champions lost a big chunk of their starting rotation down in Florida: projected opening day starter Kris Medlen and fellow right-hander Brandon Beachy both underwent Tommy John surgery for the second time and are out for the season. Another starter, Mike Minor, will also begin the year on the disabled list as he recovers from a sore shoulder.
But the Braves are nothing if not resourceful. They quickly signed Ervin Santana to a $14.1 million, one-year contract and have every intention of getting back to the playoffs for the fourth time in the last five years.
''We still have a great team,'' closer Craig Kimbrel said. ''It's tough losing two top pitchers. But getting Santana was really big. I want to be closing out division titles and championships and World Series. I think we've still got the group to do it.''
The Braves will have a different look behind the plate after longtime catcher Brian McCann signed with the New York Yankees. But another title in a lackluster division is certainly a possibility, especially if second baseman Dan Uggla and center fielder B.J. Upton bounce back from dismal seasons in which both hit under .200. They showed signs of turning things around in spring training.
''Time will tell,'' general manager Frank Wren said, ''but we really like what we've seen so far.''

*Pirates-Braves Preview* ========================

By BRETT HUSTON STATS Senior Editor

Pittsburgh (84-71) at Atlanta (76-79), 7:10 p.m. EDT

For two decades, it was hard to imagine the Pittsburgh Pirates making a single playoff appearance.

By the time they walk off the field Tuesday night, they could be on their way to a second straight postseason.

Backed by the hottest pitching staff in baseball, the Pirates' magic number is down to two as they look to make it 15 wins in their last 18 games when Gerrit Cole takes the Turner Field hill against the hitting-starved Atlanta Braves.

The memories of 20 woeful years of losing were at least partially replaced in Pittsburgh thanks to last season's 94-68 club, which won the wild-card game at home before falling to St. Louis in the division series.

The Pirates (85-71) aren't going to match that win total, but they might wind up getting awfully close given their September tear. Just three games over .500 and two out of a wild-card spot after being swept in St. Louis to begin the month, Pittsburgh went five games ahead of Milwaukee with Monday's 1-0 win over the Braves (76-80) and can clinch a postseason berth with a victory Tuesday and a Brewers loss at Cincinnati.

The only offense the Pirates needed Monday was Andrew McCutchen's sixth-inning homer, just as all it took in Sunday's win over Milwaukee was a seventh-inning RBI single from Russell Martin.

Pittsburgh starters haven't allowed a run in 23 straight innings, the team's longest stretch since a 25-inning run from June 30-July 2, 1997. As a whole, the Pirates' pitching staff has a major league-best 2.07 ERA in September - a number that shrinks to 0.88 over the past eight games.

"I'm proud of them," pitching coach Ray Searage told MLB's official website. "They go out there, they know what's at stake and, coupled with Russell Martin back there, they make up a formidable foe. They're really doing a great job."

Cole (10-5, 3.85 ERA) will try to keep it going, and he couldn't ask for a more forgiving opponent. Monday's shutout was the Braves' seventh in 21 games since Aug. 30 - six of which have occurred at home - and came just hours after the club fired general manager Frank Wren following its Sunday elimination from playoff contention.

"Just the same story, different day," first baseman Freddie Freeman said. "We've got six games left. Hopefully we can score some runs so we don't go really insane in the offseason."

Cole has won his last three starts, and his latest was easily the best in that stretch. The right-hander made it through seven innings for just the second time in 13 starts Thursday, holding Boston to two runs and striking out seven in a 3-2 win.

After helping lead the Pirates to the postseason as a rookie in 2013, Cole is now 7-1 with a 2.98 ERA in nine career September starts.

"Pitching games like this is fun," Cole said. "Every game I've pitched (in September) has been do-or-die. You want the ball in that situation. You want to do well."

His lone career start against the Braves came Aug. 20 in Pittsburgh, where he allowed two runs in seven innings before the Pirates' offense awoke late in a 3-2 win.

He'll again be opposed by the pitcher who kept Pittsburgh off balance for much of that day. Alex Wood (11-10, 2.78) gave up just three hits in his first seven innings, but a leadoff walk and double in the eighth came around to score after he was lifted.

Overall, though, that was one in what's been a string of impressive outings down the stretch. The left-hander is 4-2 in 10 starts since July 30, and his 1.84 ERA in that span is fourth in the NL - a tick better than Clayton Kershaw's.
