| |  | COLORADO: DENVER (AP) - Justin Morneau wears Larry Walker's old number and is stepping in for Todd Helton.
Just so it's clear, though: He doesn't expect to be the next Walker and certainly isn't trying to make Colorado Rockies fans forget all about Helton, the everyday first baseman in the Mile High City since 1997.
Morneau can only be himself, a slick fielder who's a four-time All-Star and former AL MVP.
That's not too bad, either.
Still, the Rockies wouldn't mind if Morneau channeled a little bit of those two Colorado icons to help them get back to the postseason. But that's a lot of cleats to fill, especially when it comes to Helton, the franchise's leader in virtually every offensive category.
Morneau's goals are more modest: Slide seamlessly into to this potent lineup, one that includes good friend and reigning NL batting champion Michael Cuddyer, along with Carlos Gonzalez and Troy Tulowitzki.
The 32-year-old Morneau knows the comparisons to Helton are inevitable. No. 17 spent 17 seasons in purple pinstripes, endearing himself to the community. The team will honor Helton on Aug. 17 when they retire his number (although Helton's first send-off will be hard to top, when the club gave him a horse in his last home game).
''From the outside looking in, it looks like I'm coming in to replace him,'' said Morneau, who wears No. 33 because of Walker, his boyhood idol. ''But that's not my thought process. My thought process is to just come in and be me and do what I can do.''
Cuddyer thinks Morneau will fit in just fine.
''If you think about the guy you're replacing, you're already not doing yourself a good service,'' said Cuddyer, who was teammates with Morneau in Minnesota. ''He respects (Helton), but he also understands he has to go out there and be himself.''
| | SAN DIEGO: SAN DIEGO (AP) - It's almost as if last season didn't end for the San Diego Padres.
The Padres go into 2014 trailing the Los Angeles Dodgers and with one of their starting pitchers already having arm trouble.
There had been a general air of optimism surrounding the Padres, who are coming off seasons of 91, 86 and 86 losses. Their rotation has been bolstered, as well as their player payroll.
Then came word late in spring training that newcomer Josh Johnson, penciled in as the No. 3 starter, is expected to be out four to five weeks after straining his right forearm.
That still leaves a projected rotation of Andrew Cashner, Tyson Ross, Ian Kennedy and Eric Stults, with a number of pitchers to choose from to replace Johnson.
''I think we have the talent on the mound, through our 12 guys that are going to make our team, to pitch well,'' manager Bud Black said. ''There's a health component here like all teams. We've got keep our best players on the field.''
The Padres signed Johnson to an $8 million, one-year contact less than two months after he had bone spurs removed from his pitching elbow. He was 2-8 with a 6.20 ERA in 16 appearances last season with Toronto.
When Johnson returns, the Padres hope he and Ian Kennedy can return to their old form.
Kennedy was acquired from division rival Arizona at the trading deadline. He went 4-2 with a 4.24 ERA with San Diego after going 3-8 with a 5.23 ERA in 21 starts with the Diamondbacks. Johnson was an All-Star with the Marlins in 2009 and 2010, and led the NL with a 2.30 ERA in 2010.
The Padres will be tested right away. They open at home Sunday night against the defending NL West champion Dodgers and their $225 million payroll, led by ace Clayton Kershaw, himself a $215 million man. The Dodgers already sit atop the division after sweeping the Diamondbacks in a two-game series in Sydney.

Despite their lowly record, the Colorado Rockies haven't quit. The same could be said of the San Diego Padres.
The visiting Rockies go for their longest winning streak in 17 months Monday night when they try to end the Padres' four-game run.
A week ago, Colorado (65-91) seemed headed for a third straight last-place finish in the NL West after totaling 11 runs with a .216 batting average during a seven-game slide.
The Rockies have nearly turned that around, as Sunday's 8-3 win over Arizona extended their winning streak to six. They're hitting a whopping .375 with 61 runs over that stretch, which includes a four-game series sweep of the Diamondbacks to move three ahead of them in the race to avoid the division cellar.
Colorado hasn't put together a longer winning streak since taking eight straight from April 12-20, 2013.
"It was good to see us not quit. We're still playing the game hard, still playing good baseball," said Michael Cuddyer, who hit a solo homer Sunday. "That's big. That's big for a lot of these guys to see we're not quitting. Going forward, years to come, it's good to see guys trying to play the game."
Justin Morneau got the day off Sunday, but he should be back to continue his bid for the NL batting title. He's tied for the lead with Pittsburgh's Josh Harrison at .318, which would be the lowest for a batting champion since Tony Gwynn hit .313 in 1988.
Morneau is hitting .415 with nine RBIs and 11 runs in his last 11 games, and he's 10 for 21 in seven games at pitcher-friendly Petco Park this year.
Cuddyer, last year's NL batting champion, is 13 for 29 with six doubles, three homers and 10 RBIs in his last seven games. However, he's 4 for 22 in his past seven at San Diego (74-81).
The Padres have won six of seven games and have gotten a 1.63 ERA from the rotation during their four straight wins.
Ian Kennedy made his contribution Sunday, allowing two runs in 6 2-3 innings of an 8-2 win to complete a three-game sweep of the playoff-contending Giants.
"I thought we played really sound baseball," manager Bud Black said. "We pitched really well ... We had a leg up there. The key was the starting pitching."
That may change with Eric Stults (7-17, 4.59 ERA) on the mound since he's tied with Philadelphia's A.J. Burnett for the most losses in the majors and has the most by a Padre since Bobby J. Jones' 19 in 2001.
The left-hander tossed four crisp innings Wednesday before giving up four runs and being pulled with one out in the fifth of a 5-2 loss to Philadelphia.
He's 0-2 with a 4.88 ERA over his last five starts against the Rockies, though four of those came in Denver.
Stults gave up three runs over 6 1-3 innings in a 3-0 loss at Colorado on Sept. 5, when he was opposed by Tyler Matzek (6-10, 4.19). Matzek tossed a three-hitter after allowing 10 runs in 12 innings while losing his previous two starts against San Diego.
The left-hander, though, is 4-1 with a 1.56 ERA in his last five starts overall after allowing two runs with six strikeouts in 5 1-3 innings of Tuesday's 10-4 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers.
