| | | LA DODGERS: LOS ANGELES (AP) - The Dodgers have spent big bucks on their roster, ramping up World Series expectations right along with the payroll. Now they want to produce results. They'll get the chance starting Saturday in Australia, where they open the season against NL West rival Arizona. With a payroll in the range of $225 million-plus, the Dodgers have laid the groundwork to get to their first World Series title since 1988, when they won the title. They came up short last year, losing to St. Louis in six games in the NL championship series. ''The expectations going in this time are realistic. We're a talented club and we're capable,'' said manager Don Mattingly, who signed a three-year extension in January. The Dodgers want to avoid the poor start they had last season, when key players were injured and the team had to rally to get back into the division race. They eventually won the title by 11 games over the Diamondbacks. ''We need to be more consistent,'' Mattingly said. ''I see it as winning every series and you'll be in pretty good shape. The next thing you know, you're 20 games over .500.'' First baseman Adrian Gonzalez is looking to follow up his strong season last year, while shortstop Hanley Ramirez, who was injured in the NL championship series, will be playing to set himself up for impending free agency.
| | CHICAGO CUBS: CHICAGO (AP) - Wrigley Field is decked out for the party of a century.
As for the Chicago Cubs?
It looks like there won't be much to celebrate this season other than their ballpark's 100th anniversary. As Wrigley hits a milestone, the Cubs remain in a rebuilding mode, hoping to avoid their fifth straight losing season.
They have a new manager in Rick Renteria. Their outlook looks about the same, though.
It's all about the future, the prized prospects in the system, no matter how painful that might be to the players in uniform at the major league level. More lumps appear to be in store for the Cubs as they enter their third year with Theo Epstein as president of baseball operations.
''The objective is to win as many games as possible, be the last man standing and bring a championship to the city of Chicago,'' pitcher Edwin Jackson said. ''The motivation is still the same. The message is still the same. We want to go out and win. We don't want to go out and be a pushover.''

*Dodgers-Cubs Preview* ======================
By ALAN FERGUSON STATS Writer
Los Angeles (88-66) at Chicago (68-86), 2:20 p.m. EDT
The Los Angeles Dodgers missed a prime opportunity to maintain their substantial advantage in the NL West when they blew a sizable lead to the Chicago Cubs.
They'll try to bounce back before a pivotal series with veteran Jamey Wright making a spot start in Sunday's finale at Wrigley Field.
Los Angeles (88-67) looked like it was taking full advantage of a four-game set with the lowly Cubs (69-86) when it took a five-run lead into the seventh inning Saturday. The Dodgers gave up four runs in the seventh and Brian Wilson surrendered a two-run homer to Chris Coghlan in the eighth in an 8-7 loss.
Coghlan finished 4 for 4 with two homers, a double and three RBIs. Adrian Gonzalez appeared that he might be the hero for Los Angeles after homering twice and driving in five runs.
Instead of chasing a second straight four-game sweep at Wrigley, the Dodgers will try to avoid a disappointing split before returning home for a three-game series against the team chasing them in the NL West, San Francisco.
Los Angeles is saving Dan Haren for Monday's opener against the Giants, and the 39-year-old Wright will make his second start since the end of the 2007 season.
Wright (5-4, 4.30 ERA) had one start in September 2013 with Tampa Bay and he's 7-4 with a 3.29 ERA in 15 career starts against the Cubs. The most recent was on May 11, 2006, in San Francisco.
Wright's longest outing in 59 appearances this season is three innings - back on May 31 - and Los Angeles might need him to last a little longer with its fatigued bullpen. The Dodgers' starters haven't gone more than five innings in any of the last six games, totaling 23 1-3 while posting a 9.26 ERA.
Their bullpen has put up a 6.18 ERA while needing to throw 27 2-3 innings in that span.
"I wish I could throw 120 pitches like I used to. Clearly, that's not going to happen," Wright told MLB's official website. "I'll go as hard as I can as long as I can. How well I do will dictate how long I stay out there. (Manager Don Mattingly) knows I'll do whatever he wants me to do."
The Cubs will send out Jacob Turner (5-10, 6.20) for his fifth start since being acquired from Miami on Aug. 8. The right-hander is 1-3 with a 7.97 ERA in the previous four and matched a career high by allowing seven runs in 4 1-3 innings in a 7-3 loss in Pittsburgh last Sunday.
Turner is 0-1 with an 8.16 ERA in three career starts against the Dodgers and has given up 11 runs in 9 1-3 innings in two matchups this season, both in May. He did yield one run in 6 1-3 innings and matched a career high with seven strikeouts in his only start with the Cubs at Wrigley, a 4-2 win over Milwaukee on Sept. 1.
Dee Gordon, riding a 13-game hit streak and a string of eight consecutive multihit performances, is 4 for 6 against Turner this season. Juan Uribe, hitting .387 in 17 games since returning from the disabled list, is 4 for 5 lifetime versus him.
Coghlan is hitting .542 (13 for 24) with three homers, three doubles and five RBIs in six games against the Dodgers this season. He's singled in one of his two at-bats against Wright.
