| |  | CHI WHITE SOX: CHICAGO (AP) - From rock bottom last season to contention this year? The Chicago White Sox see no reason why it can't happen.
They're ready to put last season's 99-loss wreck behind them and make a jump at least back to respectability, if not a run at the AL Central title.
They see a team with solid pitching, a new slugger in Jose Abreu and renewed vigor. Now, all they have to do is back it up.
''You have to pitch, you have to hit, you have to score,'' said manager Robin Ventura, entering his third season. ''You have to play defense. You have to do all of them in our division. Detroit has won it the last few years. They have a combination of everything. Unless you do that, you're not going to be close. We proved that last year.''
They had the pitching part down last season. The rest? Well, that's where things got dicey.
| | TAMPA BAY: ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - The Tampa Bay Rays feel they have everything it takes to win the World Series and aren't afraid to say it.
The budget-minded franchise that's played into October four out of the past six seasons boosted payroll instead of cutting back this winter in hopes of making another strong run for the playoffs.
''The goal is to be the team that plays the last game of the year and win,'' third baseman Evan Longoria said.
''I felt like we were really close to breaking through last year,'' the three-time AL All-Star added. ''And with the team that we have this year, I'm really excited to go out and try to prove to ourselves that we are good enough to do that.''
The Rays won 92 games a year ago, including a Game 163 tie-breaker to claim a wild-card spot, and have compiled the second-best record in baseball over the past six seasons.
That's not enough for manager Joe Maddon and a hungry collection of players who reported to spring training feeling as if there's unfinished business to tend to after losing to eventual World Series champion Boston in the AL division round.
''I love that our guys feel and think that way. I think it's great,'' Maddon said.
''You'll hear that rhetoric in a lot of clubhouses, whether it's baseball, football or basketball, but you've got to back it up. You have to really believe it. Not just say it,'' he said. ''Some groups say it because they're supposed to say it. Some groups say it because they believe it. Our guys believe it.''
That confidence was bolstered by the Rays' ability to keep most of the key components from last year's roster together, including lefty David Price, who anchors one of baseball's deepest pitching rotations.
Price and just about everybody else expected the 2012 AL Cy Young Award winner to be traded, however the Rays wound up giving him a $14 million one-year deal, in addition to re-signing first baseman James Loney and landing free agent closer Grant Balfour in moves that represent a big chunk of a club-record payroll of around $80 million.
Andrew Friedman, the team's vice president of baseball operations, also traded for catcher Ryan Hanigan and infielder Logan Forsythe to give Maddon additional flexibility filling out a batting order around Longoria and 2013 AL rookie of the year Wil Myers.
''Talent can't win every game for you, but it's a good start,'' said Loney, who signed a three-year, $21 million deal - largest since Tampa Bay has given to a free agent since Stuart Sternberg became principal owner.
''If we can stay healthy, if we can do the things we're capable of doing,'' second baseman Ben Zobrist add, ''we certainly have as good or better chance than any other team in the league to win it all.''

Officially eliminated from playoff contention, the Tampa Bay Rays must get used to playing for pride.
The Rays will look to avoid a fourth consecutive loss to the visiting Chicago White Sox on Saturday night.
Tampa Bay (74-80) blew a 3-0 lead by allowing all of Chicago's runs in the fifth inning in a 4-3 loss Friday that officially eliminated the club from the postseason race. After reaching the playoffs four of the previous six seasons and winning the wild-card game last year, the Rays had been preparing themselves for this disappointing moment.
"It's definitely no fun when you come to the park and you know you're not going to be playing in October," losing pitcher Jeremy Hellickson said.
Though the Rays overcame a 1-14 stretch that spanned May and June by getting back to .500 on Aug. 15, they've gone 13-19 since, including 7-12 at Tropicana Field.
Tampa Bay had won seven of 11 overall prior to dropping its last two contests.
"It's just the way this things rolls sometimes," manager Joe Maddon told MLB's official website. "You try to be the best every year. Obviously, it's hard to do.
"I would want to believe we'll reflect on (what happened in 2014) and really never let it happen again, and never let it happen in the next 10 years or so."
Logan Forsythe homered and had three RBIs for the Rays, who are 1-4 against the White Sox (70-83) this season.
Chris Archer (9-8, 3.54 ERA) has struggled in two career appearances - one start - against Chicago, allowing eight runs and 12 hits in eight innings without receiving a decision. He gave up half of those runs and nine hits in six innings of a 9-6 loss April 25.
The right-hander, however, has yielded four runs and 10 hits over 13 1-3 innings to go 1-0 in two starts after posting an 11.70 ERA while losing his two previous outings. Archer gave up a solo homer, two other hits and struck out nine over seven innings of a 6-5, 10-inning win at Toronto on Sunday.
All-Stars Alexei Ramirez and Jose Abreu are a combined 4 for 7 versus Archer, and batting .436 with 15 RBIs against the Rays this season.
Ramirez had three hits Friday while Abreu recorded his 104th RBI, and 12th versus Tampa Bay this year.
After going 1-0 with a 3.54 ERA in his previous three starts, Chicago's Hector Noesi (8-10, 4.77) gave up five runs and two more homers over 6 2-3 innings in a 6-4 loss to Minnesota on Sunday. The right-hander doesn't seem too concerned that he's allowed 10 home runs in his past six starts and 16 over the last 12. Noesi's 27 homers surrendered are the most in the AL.
"I'm feeling fine," he said. "Just off a little bit with my mechanics."
Noesi is 0-2 with a 6.97 ERA in three stats against the Rays, but has not faced them in that capacity since 2012 with Seattle. He pitched 1 1-3 scoreless innings during a 4-0 loss to Tampa Bay on April 26.
David DeJesus is 4 for his last 20, but 4 for 5 versus Noesi.
