KEY GAME INFORMATION
TEXAS: ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - The Texas Rangers are already hurting significantly even before the start of a new season.
In a span of three days the week before opening day, the Rangers scratched ace Yu Darvish from that scheduled start because of neck stiffness, and found out they would be without second baseman Jurickson Profar and catcher Geovany Soto for 10 to 12 weeks each because of injuries.
Sure, the Rangers know there are going to be injuries during the season.
''We just didn't expect it to be all at this point,'' general manager Jon Daniels said.
The Rangers, after missing the playoffs last year for the first time in four seasons, already knew they would be missing lefty starters Matt Harrison and Derek Holland to start the season.
At least Harrison, who had a mild setback early in camp after his back issues last season, should return within the first month. Holland could miss at least half the season because of left knee surgery after being tripped by his dog on stairs in his home in January.
The only three position players remaining from the Rangers' last World Series in 2011 also missed games this spring with lesser nagging issues. But shortstop Elvis Andrus, third baseman Adrian Beltre and designated hitter Mitch Moreland should all be in the lineup Monday against Philadelphia.
After missing the playoffs for the first time in four years and scoring their fewest runs (730) in a full season since 1992, the Rangers' two most significant offseason moves were to improve their offense.
They got durable slugger Prince Fielder from Detroit by trading Ian Kinsler, a move that cleared the way Profar to be an everyday player. Free agent outfielder Shin-Soo Choo was signed to a seven-year deal - the same time left on Fielder's contract - to take over the leadoff spot.
Only Mike Trout (564) and two-time AL MVP Miguel Cabrera (562) reached base more the past two season than Choo (556) and Fielder (542), who has the longest active streak in the majors playing in 505 consecutive regular-season games - and 809 of 810 the past five years.
''I just want Prince to be Prince,'' said manager Ron Washington, starting his eighth season in Texas. ''I just want him to do what he does, and let everyone else does what they do, and everything will work out.''
LA ANGELS: ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Albert Pujols and Josh Hamilton didn't exactly fit in right away with the Los Angeles Angels after they accepted owner Arte Moreno's lavish free-agent contracts.
Now that both sluggers feel much more comfortable and confident in Orange County, they know it's time the Angels started getting more wins for their money.
The Angels' four-year absence from the playoffs is embarrassing for an organization with a sky-high payroll and equally lofty expectations, but they seem capable of ending the drought if the club's various pieces finally add up properly.
Pujols and Hamilton are full of spring optimism after those disappointing 2013 efforts, while superstar Mike Trout is back for the third full major league campaign in his already remarkable career.

*Rangers-Angels Preview* ========================

By TAYLOR BECHTOLD STATS Writer

Texas (61-92) at Los Angeles (95-59), 9:05 p.m. EDT

The Texas Rangers have embraced the spoiler role during their season-best winning streak, though the Los Angeles Angels should be feeling confident about putting an end to the run.

The West-champion Angels will try to avoid a third straight loss while building their lead for the AL's top seed on Saturday night when Jered Weaver seeks his 10th consecutive home victory over the Rangers.

Texas (61-92) may own the worst record in baseball, but it's making an impact in the postseason races in both leagues.

After sweeping playoff hopefuls Atlanta and Oakland, the Rangers cruised to a 12-3 win in Anaheim on Friday. Ryan Rua had a career-high four hits and Jake Smolinski homered as Texas claimed only its second victory in the last 14 meetings.

"They're excited about being out here," interim manager Tim Bogar said. "They're having fun."

Since totaling 24 runs and hitting .234 while dropping 11 of 12 overall, the Rangers have turned things around with 46 runs and a .320 average during their longest winning streak since last September.

Texas, however, might have a difficult time extending the run in a matchup with Weaver (17-8, 3.50 ERA).

The right-hander, who has gone 5-1 with a 2.86 ERA in his last seven starts, allowed one run and four hits with a season-high 12 strikeouts over seven innings in last Saturday's 5-2 home win over Houston.

Now Weaver will start on extra rest after he was scratched Thursday following the club's division-clinching win a night earlier. The Angels (95-59) still own a 2 1/2-game lead over Baltimore for home-field advantage throughout the postseason.

"The way he threw the ball last time, you could see his stuff has been coming, and I think he'll maintain it," manager Mike Scioscia told MLB's official website. "But I don't think it's ever a bad thing getting (extra rest)."

Weaver has been dominant at home versus Texas, going 9-0 with a 2.19 ERA in 15 career starts. He's also allowed just three runs over 15 innings in two meetings this season - both Los Angeles victories.

Adrian Beltre is hitting .211 in 76 at-bats versus Weaver, but he's batting .365 in the season series after going 2 for 4 Friday.

Colby Lewis (10-13, 5.12) has given up three earned runs over 14 innings in his last two starts after going 1-3 with a 5.46 ERA in his previous four. He surrendered one run over seven innings in Sunday's 10-3 home win over Atlanta.

Lewis is 5-7 with a 5.14 ERA in 16 career starts versus Los Angeles, though he's 3-2 with a 2.65 mark in his six in Anaheim.

The right-hander allowed a combined 18 runs and 23 hits over 8 1-3 innings in home meetings in July and August before limiting the Angels to two earned runs and five hits over seven in a 9-3 loss in Arlington on Sept. 9.

Kole Calhoun homered off Lewis in the most recent matchup and is 6 for 10 with four RBIs against him this season. Howie Kendrick (5 for 10), Albert Pujols (4 for 10) and Mike Trout (4 for 13) also have gone deep in the matchup.

Trout has a career-high 34 home runs and a MLB-best 107 RBIs, but he's hitting .215 with two homers and 12 RBIs versus Texas after going 0 for 3 with two strikeouts Friday.

Los Angeles last dropped three in a row during a four-game skid from Aug. 5-8.
