| | | SEATTLE: SEATTLE (AP) - Robinson Cano was just the start. The Seattle Mariners didn't stop with one major splash in trying to catch up with the best in the AL West.
Even so, there remain many questions about whether Seattle's additions as a whole can improve a team coming off a 71-win season.
The moves made by Seattle general manager Jack Zduriencik were in hopes of improving the Mariners and solidifying his own future after a shaky offseason that started with Eric Wedge's decision not to return as manager.
Lloyd McClendon is getting his second shot as a major league manager nine years after he was last leading a club in Pittsburgh. Along with Cano, Seattle signed outfielder Corey Hart, closer Fernando Rodney and traded for designated hitter Logan Morrison.
Despite those moves, there remain concerns about the depth of Seattle's rotation beyond ace Felix Hernandez and whether players the Mariners have been waiting for to finally pop can establish themselves as reliable, everyday starters.
Yet the Mariners believe they will be competitive in one of baseball's toughest divisions.
''We're ready to win. That's what it's all about,'' Hernandez said. ''We're ready to win ballgames in Seattle. We're ready to be in the playoffs, we're ready to do that.''
| | LA ANGELS: ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Albert Pujols and Josh Hamilton didn't exactly fit in right away with the Los Angeles Angels after they accepted owner Arte Moreno's lavish free-agent contracts.
Now that both sluggers feel much more comfortable and confident in Orange County, they know it's time the Angels started getting more wins for their money.
The Angels' four-year absence from the playoffs is embarrassing for an organization with a sky-high payroll and equally lofty expectations, but they seem capable of ending the drought if the club's various pieces finally add up properly.
Pujols and Hamilton are full of spring optimism after those disappointing 2013 efforts, while superstar Mike Trout is back for the third full major league campaign in his already remarkable career.

*Mariners-Angels Preview* =========================
By JEFF MEZYDLO STATS Senior Writer
Seattle (81-70) at Los Angeles (95-57), 10:05 p.m. EDT
With the AL West title secured, the Los Angeles Angels can focus on finishing with home-field advantage throughout the postseason.
After the Angels wrapped up their first division crown in five years, AL wins leader Jered Weaver will try for his fourth straight home victory Thursday night against Felix Hernandez and the Seattle Mariners.
Shortly after its 5-0 victory over Seattle on Wednesday, Los Angeles (95-57) clinched the division when Texas scored six times in the ninth to beat Oakland 6-1.
"We're here to win, we want to go all the way," C.J. Wilson said after he went seven innings and yielded the Mariners' only hit of the night to Justin Smoak.
After finishing third in the West each of the past two seasons despite a high-priced, talented roster, the Angels finally met expectations by winning their first division crown since 2009.
"I feel like we've been special for three years," Wilson said. "We just haven't put it all together until now."
Owner of the majors' best record, Los Angeles was four games behind the first-place Athletics on Aug. 10 but has gone 27-8 since. Now, it leads Baltimore by three games for the best record in baseball.
"They've won so many games in such a short amount of time, and it's really a credit to every guy," said manager Mike Scioscia, who won his sixth AL West title in 11 seasons. "We're going to enjoy the champagne and then go try to win (Thursday)."
C.J. Cron's three-run homer highlighted a five-run seventh for the Angels, who celebrated with those fans who stuck around the ballpark to watch Oakland lose on the venue's video screen.
"We're lucky to get to celebrate with our fans," Wilson said.
While it's uncertain how many regulars will take the field for the Angels on Thursday, Weaver (17-8, 3.50 ERA) appears set to try and continue his success at home, where he's 5-1 with a 2.05 ERA in his last nine outings and has a 1.35 ERA over the last three.
He gave up a run and struck out a season-high 12 in seven innings of a 5-2 victory over Houston on Saturday to improve to 3-1 with a 2.08 ERA in his last four overall.
"Year after year, we've seen Weave come out and be the lead dog," Scioscia said. "I don't know if I've seen Weave throw like this for about five years."
Weaver is 1-1 with a 3.93 ERA in three starts against the Mariners during a season that began with him opposing Hernandez (14-5, 2.14) and allowing three earned runs in 6 1-3 innings of a 10-3 loss March 31.
Hernandez gave up two earned runs and struck out 11 in six innings to earn the win in that contest. He's allowed one earned, six hits and fanned 18 over 15 2-3 innings while going 1-0 in his other two against the Angels.
Since giving up five runs on four homers in seven innings of an 8-3 loss to Washington on Aug. 29, the right-hander is 1-0 with a 1.29 ERA in his last three outings. He gave up two runs and struck out eight over seven innings of a 3-2, 10-inning defeat to Oakland on Saturday.
"I just have to go out there and do what I can do to win a game," Hernandez told MLB's official website.
Though Mike Trout is 3 for 12 with seven strikeouts in the last four games, he's batting .383 (18 for 47) with three doubles, two triples and two homers against Hernandez.
Robinson Cano, meanwhile, is hitting .395 (15 for 38) lifetime versus Weaver.
