| | | SEATTLE: SEATTLE (AP) - Robinson Cano was just the start. The Seattle Mariners didn't stop with one major splash in trying to catch up with the best in the AL West.
Even so, there remain many questions about whether Seattle's additions as a whole can improve a team coming off a 71-win season.
The moves made by Seattle general manager Jack Zduriencik were in hopes of improving the Mariners and solidifying his own future after a shaky offseason that started with Eric Wedge's decision not to return as manager.
Lloyd McClendon is getting his second shot as a major league manager nine years after he was last leading a club in Pittsburgh. Along with Cano, Seattle signed outfielder Corey Hart, closer Fernando Rodney and traded for designated hitter Logan Morrison.
Despite those moves, there remain concerns about the depth of Seattle's rotation beyond ace Felix Hernandez and whether players the Mariners have been waiting for to finally pop can establish themselves as reliable, everyday starters.
Yet the Mariners believe they will be competitive in one of baseball's toughest divisions.
''We're ready to win. That's what it's all about,'' Hernandez said. ''We're ready to win ballgames in Seattle. We're ready to be in the playoffs, we're ready to do that.''
| | LA ANGELS: ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Albert Pujols and Josh Hamilton didn't exactly fit in right away with the Los Angeles Angels after they accepted owner Arte Moreno's lavish free-agent contracts.
Now that both sluggers feel much more comfortable and confident in Orange County, they know it's time the Angels started getting more wins for their money.
The Angels' four-year absence from the playoffs is embarrassing for an organization with a sky-high payroll and equally lofty expectations, but they seem capable of ending the drought if the club's various pieces finally add up properly.
Pujols and Hamilton are full of spring optimism after those disappointing 2013 efforts, while superstar Mike Trout is back for the third full major league campaign in his already remarkable career.

*Mariners-Angels Preview* =========================
By JORDAN GARRETSON STATS Writer
Seattle (81-69) at Los Angeles (94-57), 10:05 p.m. EDT
The Los Angeles Angels learned of yet another hit to their pitching staff via injury - and then the hits kept coming for the Seattle Mariners.
Nonetheless, they could still wind up clinching the AL West title on Wednesday night as they look to bounce back from their worst loss in more than four months behind C.J. Wilson.
The Angels found out Tuesday that Matt Shoemaker will miss at least one start due to a mild oblique strain suffered in an 8-1 win in Monday's series opener. There's no guarantee Shoemaker - whose 16 wins are a franchise rookie record - will be able to pitch in the postseason, with manager Mike Scioscia saying his return will be dictated strictly by his healing and not by the club's situation.
Los Angeles already lost ace Garrett Richards last month due to a torn patellar tendon and Tyler Skaggs earlier to Tommy John surgery.
"You have to move forward, you have to keep pitching and you have to keep getting outs," Scioscia told MLB's official website. "We're confident we will, just might be a little bit unconventional."
After Cory Rasmus provided four shutout innings to start, Scioscia's bullpen was walloped in a 13-2 loss Tuesday as six relievers allowed 13 hits, including five doubles. Seattle blew the game open with a six-run sixth inning as Los Angeles' defeat matched a 14-3 setback against Texas on May 4 as its worst of the season.
However, Oakland's loss to Texas means the Angels (94-57) can clinch their first division title since 2009 with their 18th win in 22 games and another Athletics defeat.
They'll call on Wilson (12-9, 4.61 ERA), who is looking for a third straight victory for the first time this season. The left-hander got 23 runs of support in his past two wins, though, and needed 108 pitches to get through five innings Friday while allowing three runs in an 11-3 victory against the Astros.
Wilson also will be looking to end a three-start losing streak against Seattle during which he's posted a 4.98 ERA.
Kendrys Morales - who had been 1 for 24 over his previous seven games before going 2 for 3 Tuesday - is 10 for 23 off Wilson and homered against him with Minnesota on June 24.
Seattle (81-69) had lost five of six while totaling 10 runs before pulling within a game of Kansas City for the second wild-card spot.
"When you're not scoring runs, it lingers," said Mike Zunino, who was 2 for 3 after going 4 for 41 in his previous 14 contests. "Hopefully, this will loosen us up."
James Paxton (6-2, 1.83) gets the ball for the Mariners after an impressive performance in Friday's 4-2 win over Oakland, striking out eight and allowing one earned run in six innings.
"I keep saying, he's the glue to this rotation. He's not a fluke," manager Lloyd McClendon said. "This young man is good."
The left-hander yielded only three runs over 12 innings while knocking off the Angels in his first two career starts in this series back in April.
Albert Pujols, who rejoined the lineup after exiting early Monday due to a cramp, collected his 98th RBI on Tuesday and has driven in 15 over his last 12 games.
Josh Hamilton was 1 for 3 after missing 11 games with a right shoulder injury.
