KEY GAME INFORMATION
NY YANKEES: NEW YORK (AP) - Derek Jeter is saying goodbye. Masahiro Tanaka is saying hello.
Jacoby Ellsbury, Brian McCann and Carlos Beltran are new to the Bronx; David Robertson is new to the closer's role. And Alex Rodriguez is nowhere to be seen.
Mariano Rivera and Andy Pettitte have retired, and Robinson Cano has moved to Seattle.
After missing the playoffs for only the second time in 19 years, the New York Yankees will look a whole lot different. And for the first time since 1998, they don't have baseball's highest payroll.
''I think it is probably the biggest transition I've been through,'' manager Joe Girardi says.
For only the second time in team history and the first time since 1947, every position on opening day other than the mound will be manned by a different Yankees player on opening day than in New York's previous opener.
New York's forgettable 2013 season began with an 8-2 loss to Boston, with Kevin Youkilis at first, Cano at second, Eduardo Nunez at shortstop, Jayson Nix at third, Francisco Cervelli behind the plate, Vernon Wells in left, Brett Gardner in center and Ichiro Suzuki in right.
The only holdover for Tuesday's opener at Houston figures to be Gardner, who has shifted to left. The rest of the starting lineup figures to have McCann behind the plate, Mark Teixeira at first, Brian Roberts at second, Jeter at shortstop, Kelly Johnson at third, Ellsbury in center and Beltran in right.
CC Sabathia will be the constant on the mound. He's coming off the poorest of his 13 major league seasons at 14-13 with a 4.78 ERA.
''Nobody wants to go through that again,'' he says. ''It sticks with me a lot. Just being disappointed in not being able to help this team win. I feel like if I could have been a little better we might have made the playoffs. I blamed myself for a long time in the offseason and now I'm over it and ready to go this year.
TAMPA BAY: ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - The Tampa Bay Rays feel they have everything it takes to win the World Series and aren't afraid to say it.
The budget-minded franchise that's played into October four out of the past six seasons boosted payroll instead of cutting back this winter in hopes of making another strong run for the playoffs.
''The goal is to be the team that plays the last game of the year and win,'' third baseman Evan Longoria said.
''I felt like we were really close to breaking through last year,'' the three-time AL All-Star added. ''And with the team that we have this year, I'm really excited to go out and try to prove to ourselves that we are good enough to do that.''
The Rays won 92 games a year ago, including a Game 163 tie-breaker to claim a wild-card spot, and have compiled the second-best record in baseball over the past six seasons.
That's not enough for manager Joe Maddon and a hungry collection of players who reported to spring training feeling as if there's unfinished business to tend to after losing to eventual World Series champion Boston in the AL division round.
''I love that our guys feel and think that way. I think it's great,'' Maddon said.
''You'll hear that rhetoric in a lot of clubhouses, whether it's baseball, football or basketball, but you've got to back it up. You have to really believe it. Not just say it,'' he said. ''Some groups say it because they're supposed to say it. Some groups say it because they believe it. Our guys believe it.''
That confidence was bolstered by the Rays' ability to keep most of the key components from last year's roster together, including lefty David Price, who anchors one of baseball's deepest pitching rotations.
Price and just about everybody else expected the 2012 AL Cy Young Award winner to be traded, however the Rays wound up giving him a $14 million one-year deal, in addition to re-signing first baseman James Loney and landing free agent closer Grant Balfour in moves that represent a big chunk of a club-record payroll of around $80 million.
Andrew Friedman, the team's vice president of baseball operations, also traded for catcher Ryan Hanigan and infielder Logan Forsythe to give Maddon additional flexibility filling out a batting order around Longoria and 2013 AL rookie of the year Wil Myers.
''Talent can't win every game for you, but it's a good start,'' said Loney, who signed a three-year, $21 million deal - largest since Tampa Bay has given to a free agent since Stuart Sternberg became principal owner.
''If we can stay healthy, if we can do the things we're capable of doing,'' second baseman Ben Zobrist add, ''we certainly have as good or better chance than any other team in the league to win it all.''

*Yankees-Rays Preview* ======================

By PAUL DIGIACOMO STATS Senior Editor

New York (76-72) at Tampa Bay (72-78), 7:10 p.m. EDT

If the New York Yankees miss the playoffs in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 1992 and '93, they won't have to look further than a lack of offense for the reason why it happened.

After another lackluster performance at the plate, the fading Yankees try to avoid a fifth loss in six games when they continue a three-game series with the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday night.

New York (76-73) is last in the AL with 577 runs and has scored six times while losing four of five to fall six games behind Kansas City for the second wild-card spot with 13 games remaining.

The Yankees were shut out for the fourth time in 11 games and failed to reach double digits in hits for the ninth straight time in Monday's series-opening 1-0 loss.

"We're just not hitting for whatever reason," said manager Joe Girardi, whose team was eliminated from AL East title contention. "... Eventually it has to turn, but it needs to turn very quickly."

Michael Pineda (3-4, 2.20 ERA) gets the start for the Yankees, and he's recently felt the brunt of the lineup's struggles. New York hasn't scored a single run with him on the mound in his past three starts and was no-hit by Tampa Bay's Alex Cobb for 7 1-3 innings in his last outing Thursday.

The right-hander allowed four runs and a career-high 10 hits - two homers by Yunel Escobar - in 7 1-3 innings before the Yankees finally broke through and won 5-4 on Chris Young's three-run walkoff homer.

Escobar is 6 for 12 in his career against Pineda, who had not faced Tampa Bay since going 1-0 with a 2.19 ERA in two starts with Seattle in 2011. Evan Longoria is 0 for 8 with three strikeouts in their matchups.

Jake Odorizzi (10-12, 4.08) takes the mound for Tampa Bay (73-78) for the first time since getting roughed up at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday. The right-hander entered with a 14 1-3 inning scoreless streak before allowing six runs in 4 1-3 of an 8-5 loss.

"I'm solely to blame for tonight," said Odorizzi, who was staked to a 4-0 lead after one-half inning. "The loss is on me and the whole team can point the finger in this direction and I'll accept it."

Odorizzi is 1-1 with a 7.71 ERA in three starts against the Yankees this season, all in New York. Catcher Brian McCann is 5 for 7 with two homers and a double when facing him, while Derek Jeter is 0 for 6.

Jeter is in an 0-for-24 slump and was not in the starting lineup Monday. He's batting .164 (21 for 128) with three extra-base hits in his last 32 games, dropping his average to .250. Jeter entered his final season with a .312 career average.

"I really haven't thought about it," he said. "I'm just trying to help us win. For me, I just want to go out and I want to play well. I want to get a hit every single time up."

Ben Zobrist delivered a walkoff RBI single Monday for the Rays, who became the first team since the 1973-75 Red Sox to beat the Yankees 10 or more times in three straight seasons.

Tampa Bay, which will honor Jeter before this game, is looking to win three in a row for the first time since Aug. 13-15.
