| | | PHILADELPHIA: PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Ryan Howard and his teammates have heard critics say the window has closed for the Philadelphia Phillies.
They just don't believe it.
After a dominant run that included five straight NL East titles, two pennants and the 2008 World Series championship, the Phillies have missed the postseason two consecutive years. They have an aging core of players who've been declining.
Howard, Chase Utley, Jimmy Rollins and Carlos Ruiz are the remaining regulars from the group that led Philadelphia to its best era of baseball from 2007-11 under former manager Charlie Manuel.
They're determined to make another run.
''We've had a bad couple years and had injuries and all that stuff, but I don't think it's over,'' Howard said. ''People are entitled to their opinions and that's fine, but it's up to us to go out there and show them otherwise and go out and play our game and do what we do.''
General manager Ruben Amaro Jr. refused to start the rebuilding process after the Phillies' first losing season since 2002. Instead, he re-signed Utley and Ruiz and added veteran outfielder Marlon Byrd and right-hander A.J. Burnett in free agency.
If the older players live up to their hefty contracts and younger guys like 2013 All-Star Domonic Brown, Cody Asche and Ben Revere continue to develop, the Phillies should be in contention.
''I think we're positive. We're expecting to win and plan on doing everything we can to ensure that,'' ace lefty Cliff Lee said.
| | SAN DIEGO: SAN DIEGO (AP) - It's almost as if last season didn't end for the San Diego Padres.
The Padres go into 2014 trailing the Los Angeles Dodgers and with one of their starting pitchers already having arm trouble.
There had been a general air of optimism surrounding the Padres, who are coming off seasons of 91, 86 and 86 losses. Their rotation has been bolstered, as well as their player payroll.
Then came word late in spring training that newcomer Josh Johnson, penciled in as the No. 3 starter, is expected to be out four to five weeks after straining his right forearm.
That still leaves a projected rotation of Andrew Cashner, Tyson Ross, Ian Kennedy and Eric Stults, with a number of pitchers to choose from to replace Johnson.
''I think we have the talent on the mound, through our 12 guys that are going to make our team, to pitch well,'' manager Bud Black said. ''There's a health component here like all teams. We've got keep our best players on the field.''
The Padres signed Johnson to an $8 million, one-year contact less than two months after he had bone spurs removed from his pitching elbow. He was 2-8 with a 6.20 ERA in 16 appearances last season with Toronto.
When Johnson returns, the Padres hope he and Ian Kennedy can return to their old form.
Kennedy was acquired from division rival Arizona at the trading deadline. He went 4-2 with a 4.24 ERA with San Diego after going 3-8 with a 5.23 ERA in 21 starts with the Diamondbacks. Johnson was an All-Star with the Marlins in 2009 and 2010, and led the NL with a 2.30 ERA in 2010.
The Padres will be tested right away. They open at home Sunday night against the defending NL West champion Dodgers and their $225 million payroll, led by ace Clayton Kershaw, himself a $215 million man. The Dodgers already sit atop the division after sweeping the Diamondbacks in a two-game series in Sydney.

*Phillies-Padres Preview* =========================
By JORDAN GARRETSON STATS Writer
Philadelphia (69-81) at San Diego (69-80), 10:10 p.m. EDT
Andrew Cashner just provided the San Diego Padres with the type of gem their struggling pitching staff sorely needed.
Ian Kennedy now looks to shake off back-to-back losses with a similar performance when he takes the mound Tuesday night against the visiting Philadelphia Phillies.
San Diego (69-80) dropped nine of 11 while its starters posted a 5.52 ERA before Cashner tossed a two-hitter for his third career shutout in a 1-0 win over Philadelphia in Monday's series opener.
Cashner needed only 92 pitches and struck out seven, while Rene Rivera scored the lone run on Cody Asche's second-inning error.
Kennedy (10-13, 3.77 ERA) has dropped two straight starts for the fourth time this season, giving up 10 hits apiece in losses to Arizona and the Dodgers. It marked the first time the right-hander has ever allowed double-digit hits in consecutive starts.
Manager Bud Black wasn't necessarily disappointed with Kennedy's performance when he surrendered three runs over six-plus innings in a 4-0 loss to Los Angeles on Wednesday.
"I thought overall he pitched well enough to win on given nights," Black told MLB's official website. "Kept us in the game, threw pitches in the seventh inning in a pitchers' duel."
He has shown resolve with a 3.18 ERA in three starts immediately following his previous two-game skids this season - all Padres victories.
In a 5-2 loss at Philadelphia on June 10, Kennedy allowed five runs in seven innings. He had been 2-1 with a 2.45 ERA in five previous career meetings with the Phillies.
Philadelphia (69-81) is struggling at the plate and failed to advance a runner past first base Monday. The Phillies have averaged 2.6 runs while dropping six of 10. Ben Revere - who is hitting a club-best .307 - is just 7 for 39 in that stretch.
Jerome Williams was strong opposite Cashner, giving up the unearned run and three hits over 7 2-3 innings.
"Jerome was pretty good himself," manager Ryan Sandberg said. "He pitched very well. We just couldn't get anything going off of Cashner."
Revere is 3 for 7 against Kennedy, Chase Utley is 5 for 14 and Ryan Howard 2 for 15.
A.J. Burnett (8-16, 4.34) gets the ball for Philadelphia after going 2-7 with a 5.68 ERA in his last nine starts. He gave up four runs over six innings in a 4-1 loss to Pittsburgh on Thursday.
He got the win in a 5-2 victory over San Diego on June 10, yielding just two runs and a season low-tying three hits in 7 1-3 innings. However, he's still just 3-6 with a 4.05 ERA in 10 career starts against the Padres.
Jedd Gyorko is hitting .343 over his last nine games for San Diego.
Phillies closer Jonathan Papelbon started serving a seven-game suspension issued by the commissioner's office Monday for making a lewd gesture and bumping an umpire.
Papelbon was ejected following his blown save in Sunday's 5-4 loss to Miami after he appeared to grab his crotch in the direction of the fans while leaving the mound. He then made contact with umpire Joe West in an ensuing shouting match.
