| | | LA DODGERS: LOS ANGELES (AP) - The Dodgers have spent big bucks on their roster, ramping up World Series expectations right along with the payroll. Now they want to produce results. They'll get the chance starting Saturday in Australia, where they open the season against NL West rival Arizona. With a payroll in the range of $225 million-plus, the Dodgers have laid the groundwork to get to their first World Series title since 1988, when they won the title. They came up short last year, losing to St. Louis in six games in the NL championship series. ''The expectations going in this time are realistic. We're a talented club and we're capable,'' said manager Don Mattingly, who signed a three-year extension in January. The Dodgers want to avoid the poor start they had last season, when key players were injured and the team had to rally to get back into the division race. They eventually won the title by 11 games over the Diamondbacks. ''We need to be more consistent,'' Mattingly said. ''I see it as winning every series and you'll be in pretty good shape. The next thing you know, you're 20 games over .500.'' First baseman Adrian Gonzalez is looking to follow up his strong season last year, while shortstop Hanley Ramirez, who was injured in the NL championship series, will be playing to set himself up for impending free agency.
| | COLORADO: DENVER (AP) - Justin Morneau wears Larry Walker's old number and is stepping in for Todd Helton.
Just so it's clear, though: He doesn't expect to be the next Walker and certainly isn't trying to make Colorado Rockies fans forget all about Helton, the everyday first baseman in the Mile High City since 1997.
Morneau can only be himself, a slick fielder who's a four-time All-Star and former AL MVP.
That's not too bad, either.
Still, the Rockies wouldn't mind if Morneau channeled a little bit of those two Colorado icons to help them get back to the postseason. But that's a lot of cleats to fill, especially when it comes to Helton, the franchise's leader in virtually every offensive category.
Morneau's goals are more modest: Slide seamlessly into to this potent lineup, one that includes good friend and reigning NL batting champion Michael Cuddyer, along with Carlos Gonzalez and Troy Tulowitzki.
The 32-year-old Morneau knows the comparisons to Helton are inevitable. No. 17 spent 17 seasons in purple pinstripes, endearing himself to the community. The team will honor Helton on Aug. 17 when they retire his number (although Helton's first send-off will be hard to top, when the club gave him a horse in his last home game).
''From the outside looking in, it looks like I'm coming in to replace him,'' said Morneau, who wears No. 33 because of Walker, his boyhood idol. ''But that's not my thought process. My thought process is to just come in and be me and do what I can do.''
Cuddyer thinks Morneau will fit in just fine.
''If you think about the guy you're replacing, you're already not doing yourself a good service,'' said Cuddyer, who was teammates with Morneau in Minnesota. ''He respects (Helton), but he also understands he has to go out there and be himself.''

*Dodgers-Rockies Preview* =========================
By JEFF MEZYDLO STATS Senior Writer
Los Angeles (86-64) at Colorado (59-91), 8:40 p.m. EDT
If Dan Haren is to continue his recent run of dominance for the Los Angeles Dodgers, he must fare better at Coors Field than he has in recent years.
A day before his 34th birthday, Haren can win a season-high third consecutive start by avoiding a third straight defeat at Coors and helping hand the Colorado Rockies their eighth loss in a row Tuesday night.
Haren (13-10, 3.99 ERA) allowed four hits in seven innings of a 4-0 win over San Diego on Wednesday. He's yielded only two earned runs over 26 innings while going 3-0 in four starts since giving up six runs - three earned - in three innings of a 7-2 loss to Milwaukee on Aug. 17.
"I just try to get outs," the right-hander said. "I've minimized my mistakes and located better. I've stayed the course."
No longer focused on his velocity, Haren hopes to continue his success and help Los Angeles (86-64) capture its second straight NL West title.
"I've got two or three starts left and if they're good ones I'll be in a good place," he said. "I treat every game from here on out like it's a playoff game. I put a lot of pressure on myself."
Haren is 2-0 with a 1.40 ERA in his last three road starts but has a 10.23 ERA while losing three of his last four at Coors. He was tagged for eight runs and 10 hits in 5 1-3 innings of an 8-7 loss there July 5.
Colorado (59-91), however, has been outscored 32-11 during a losing streak that reached seven games following Monday's 11-3 defeat.
Matt Kemp homered for the second straight game and Adrian Gonzalez had three RBIs for Los Angeles, which has won three straight and eight of 10.
Kemp, who has seven RBIs in three contests, is batting .380 with three homers and 13 RBIs in 13 games this year against the Rockies, who have lost eight of nine in the series.
Kemp had an animated chat with Yasiel Puig in the dugout during the middle of Monday's game, though he wasn't willing to divulge details afterward.
Los Angeles manager Don Mattingly wasn't forthcoming, either, after cameras caught Kemp trailing behind Puig and saying something. Mattingly stepped into the middle of the squabble and whisked the young slugger away.
"Just talking in the dugout," Mattingly explained. "Family stuff. Family business."
Wilin Rosario homered among his three hits for Colorado, which will look to avoid matching its season-high eight-game skid from May 28-June 6.
Colorado rookie Tyler Matzek (5-10, 4.23) posted a 7.89 ERA during a four-start losing streak before going 3-1 with a 1.23 ERA over his next four. In a 2-0 loss to the Mets on Wednesday, the left-hander allowed both runs and walked four over 6 1-3 innings.
"Losing (really stinks)," Matzek told MLB's official website. "Having pride in yourself, wanting to go out there and beat the other guy, the guy in the other dugout should be the most important thing."
Matzek has lost once in his last three starts at Coors while posting a 1.19 ERA. He tossed a three-hitter during a 3-0 victory over San Diego on Sept. 5 in his most recent appearance there.
He gave up three runs and 10 hits in five innings of a 6-1 loss at Dodger Stadium on June 16 in his second career start.
Teammate Corey Dickerson is 4 for 5 with a homer and three doubles against Haren and is batting .409 with 10 RBIs in his last 10 at home.
Colorado's Justin Morneau went 1 for 3 on Monday after missing two games with sore left ribs. His .315 average is two percentage points behind NL leader Josh Harrison of Pittsburgh. Morneau is 1 for 3 with a double against Haren this season.
