KEY GAME INFORMATION
SAN FRANCISCO: SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - From every slot in a talented, experienced rotation to the back end of the bullpen and in between, to the starting fielders and the role players on the bench, it's hard to find a member of the San Francisco Giants pleased with his 2013 season.
A year after winning the World Series, the Giants finished 10 games under .500, third in the NL West and they missed the playoffs.
''We don't even have to have the conversation, a lot of the guys know it,'' right-hander Matt Cain said. ''We didn't pitch the way that we wanted to.''
As the Giants begin a new year, they will try to keep up with the big-spending Los Angeles Dodgers and regain the grip they had on the NL West when the club won World Series championships in 2010 and `12 - even if everybody expects the Dodgers to be the team to beat.
''You do try to reflect back and try to learn from what happened last year and how you can get better,'' manager Bruce Bochy said. ''You move forward, that's what we had to do. There are some things we'll talk about in the spring, mistakes that we made last year. Also, hopefully guys come in with an attitude, that they weren't happy with what happened the year before and want to get back on track.''
Buster Posey certainly doesn't want to spend too much time thinking about last season.
''That's probably how everybody feels. There's a bad taste in a lot of guys' mouths,'' Posey said. ''We want to come out and focus on winning ballgames.''
ARIZONA: PHOENIX (AP) - The season had not even started when the Arizona Diamondbacks took a loss.
A day before boarding the plane for their season opener in Australia, the Diamondbacks learned scheduled opening-day starter Patrick Corbin had a partially torn ligament in his pitching elbow and might need season-ending surgery.
Arizona went 21-8 in the young left-hander's starts last season, more than a quarter of the victories for a team that went 81-81 for the second year in a row. The Los Angeles Dodgers celebrated their NL West title by splashing around in Arizona's Chase Field swimming pool.
Arizona retooled during the offseason by adding power (Mark Trumbo), a veteran starter (Bronson Arroyo) and a young closer (Addison Reed). Even with the loss of Corbin, the Diamondbacks feel they have the components to contend for at least a wild-card berth.
''They really want it,'' catcher Miguel Montero said. ''They're hungry for something, and that's a good feeling. I think last year we were a little bit more laid back. This year the guys are hungry, and that's a good thing.''
Trumbo noticed a positive attitude right from the start of spring training.
''That's the personality of the guys here and that plays really well for the course of a long season,'' he said. ''You've got to have guys that play the game right way, but play it with a little bit of a chip on their shoulder and bring it every day.''

*Giants-Diamondbacks Preview* =============================

By JEFF MEZYDLO STATS Senior Writer

San Francisco (82-68) at Arizona (62-88), 9:40 p.m. EDT

Jake Peavy continues to give the San Francisco Giants the effort they need from a veteran during a playoff chase.

Looking to help the visiting Giants avoid a fourth straight defeat, Peavy tries to win four straight starts for the first time in five years Tuesday night against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Peavy (5-4, 2.29 ERA) posted a 4.82 ERA and received six runs of support while on the mound in losing his first three starts after San Francisco (82-68) acquired him from Boston on July 26. However, in his last six outings, the right-hander is 5-1 with a 1.12 ERA and has received an average of 6.92 runs of support.

"It's been fun to watch him, to see the intensity and the talent that Jake has, and he's been on every start," manager Bruce Bochy told MLB's official website. "A couple starts our defense probably hurt him, but he's really commanding the ball well, all of his pitches."

Peavy allowed his only earned run over 19 1-3 innings of his last three outings in a sixth inning he never finished during Thursday's 6-2 victory over Arizona (62-88).

Peavy, who last won four in a row over his final four starts of 2009, sees some of the same qualities in the Giants that he experienced while winning his first World Series ring with Boston in 2013.

"We're showing up with a fresh attitude every day, and certainly a lot of the same spirit is in this (clubhouse)," Peavy said after dropping his ERA to 3.12 while winning his fourth consecutive start against the Diamondbacks.

He hopes to help wild card-leading San Francisco end a three-game skid during which its starters have yielded 14 runs in 13 2-3 innings.

The Giants also have scored four runs during that slide and could be in for another tough challenge against Josh Collmenter (10-7, 3.67), who allowed three hits over six innings in their 5-0 victory Thursday.

"He was good," Giants outfielder Gregor Blanco said about Collmenter, who has yielded two earned runs and 14 hits over 27 2-3 innings while going 2-0 in his last four starts.

"Good changeup. He was locating the fastball. He was tough to hit. He was keeping us out of balance."

The right-hander has overcome six walks to allow one run in 11 innings while going 1-0 in two starts against the Giants this season.

Buster Posey, though, is 3 for 6 this season, and 9 for 14 with two home runs and a double lifetime versus Collmenter.

Posey is batting .408 with 12 RBIs in his last 13 games at Chase Field.

San Francisco had won 16 of 21 at Arizona before Mark Trumbo's grand slam highlighted the Diamondbacks' season high-tying third straight victory, 6-2 on Monday.

Trumbo is batting .239 during a disappointing season in which he missed almost three months with a broken foot, but is 6 for 12 with nine RBIs in the last three games.

"He's kind of hitting his stride lately, swinging the bat much better, more comfortable," Arizona manager Kirk Gibson said.

Trumbo, however, is 1 for 8 with three strikeouts versus Peavy.
