| | | COLORADO: DENVER (AP) - Justin Morneau wears Larry Walker's old number and is stepping in for Todd Helton.
Just so it's clear, though: He doesn't expect to be the next Walker and certainly isn't trying to make Colorado Rockies fans forget all about Helton, the everyday first baseman in the Mile High City since 1997.
Morneau can only be himself, a slick fielder who's a four-time All-Star and former AL MVP.
That's not too bad, either.
Still, the Rockies wouldn't mind if Morneau channeled a little bit of those two Colorado icons to help them get back to the postseason. But that's a lot of cleats to fill, especially when it comes to Helton, the franchise's leader in virtually every offensive category.
Morneau's goals are more modest: Slide seamlessly into to this potent lineup, one that includes good friend and reigning NL batting champion Michael Cuddyer, along with Carlos Gonzalez and Troy Tulowitzki.
The 32-year-old Morneau knows the comparisons to Helton are inevitable. No. 17 spent 17 seasons in purple pinstripes, endearing himself to the community. The team will honor Helton on Aug. 17 when they retire his number (although Helton's first send-off will be hard to top, when the club gave him a horse in his last home game).
''From the outside looking in, it looks like I'm coming in to replace him,'' said Morneau, who wears No. 33 because of Walker, his boyhood idol. ''But that's not my thought process. My thought process is to just come in and be me and do what I can do.''
Cuddyer thinks Morneau will fit in just fine.
''If you think about the guy you're replacing, you're already not doing yourself a good service,'' said Cuddyer, who was teammates with Morneau in Minnesota. ''He respects (Helton), but he also understands he has to go out there and be himself.''
| | ST LOUIS: ST. LOUIS (AP) - Last October, the St. Louis Cardinals were sufficiently flush with arms that they carried rookie Shelby Miller and deposed closer Edward Mujica in ceremonial roles and made it to Game 6 of the World Series against Boston.
After leading major league rookies with 15 wins, Miller was limited to one postseason inning due to concerns about a heavy workload. Mujica was used only in mop-up duty after mid-September.
The National League champions are perhaps even deeper, across the board, entering opening day March 31 at Cincinnati. The team that tied for the major league high with 97 wins has a surplus of viable candidates.
''I think we have the potential to be great,'' said ace Adam Wainwright, who won 19 games and finished second in NL Cy Young balloting. ''We just have to go out there, not listen to the hype, and perform.''
The 32-year-old Wainwright qualifies as the grizzled leader of a rotation that could include three members coming off big rookie debuts. Michael Wacha was a postseason sensation and the NLCS MVP, Miller went wire-to-wire as the fifth starter and Carlos Martinez, who's had an impressive spring, moved into the setup role when fellow rookie Trevor Rosenthal took over as closer.
Wacha and Martinez are 22, Miller and Rosenthal just 23.
There's also 15-game winner Lance Lynn, who struck out 10 in four innings of his last spring training start, and lefty Jaime Garcia could fit into the mix sometime in April coming off shoulder surgery. And don't forget Joe Kelly, another rookie who won 10 games and was the rotation's strongest starter much of the second half.
And one of the National League's best lineups, too.
Much is expected from a loyal fan base that extends several states, and that's OK.
''Our expectations,'' Lynn said, ''are higher than theirs.''

*Rockies-Cardinals Preview* ===========================
By MATT BECKER STATS Editor
Colorado (59-88) at St. Louis (81-67), 2:15 p.m. EDT
As expected, a home series against the lowly Colorado Rockies has helped the St. Louis Cardinals get back on track in their pursuit of the NL Central crown.
Just as predictable, Matt Holliday has feasted on the pitching of his former team.
Holliday looks to help the Cardinals sweep the three-game set with an eighth straight home win in Sunday's finale.
St. Louis (82-67) entered this series on the heels of a three-game losing streak before winning 5-1 in Friday's opener. The Cardinals held on for a 5-4 victory the next night to move 3 1/2 games ahead of second-place Pittsburgh and five up on scuffling Milwaukee.
Holliday hit a homer that traveled an estimated 467 feet Friday, then went deep again Saturday.
"He's one of the best hitters in the game," winning pitcher Shelby Miller said.
Colorado (59-89) probably agrees with that sentiment.
Holliday is 10 for 20 with five extra-base hits in five games against the Rockies this season, and batting .453 with eight homers, seven doubles and 27 RBIs in 19 contests against them since the start of the 2012 season.
Holliday, who spent the first five years of his career with Colorado, went 2 for 3 with a double last July against starter Jordan Lyles (6-2, 4.20 ERA) in his lone start against St. Louis.
The Cardinals have won 11 of 15 overall, and 12 in a row at home in the final month of the season dating to last Sept. 14. They're seeking their first single-season eight-game winning streak at Busch Stadium since July 2010.
Michael Wacha was slated to take the mound for St. Louis on Sunday, but the right-hander is being pushed back for some extended rest. Rookie Marco Gonzales (2-2, 5.01) backed up Wacha in his two abbreviated starts since coming off the disabled list, and will get the ball from the get-go Sunday for his fifth big league start.
Gonzales allowed a run over 2 1-3 innings in Milwaukee on Sept. 4 and pitched a scoreless inning Tuesday at Cincinnati.
A first-round draft pick in 2013, the left-hander made his major league debut at Colorado on June 25, surrendering five runs and seven hits in five innings of a 9-6 win, though he did not factor in the decision. His ERA rose to 9.64 with another shaky outing six days later, but he's recorded a 1.69 ERA in his last two starts.
"He's doing a great job," manager Mike Matheny told MLB's official website. "That time we gave him an opportunity against Colorado, I thought he did a great job, too. Put him back in that position and see how he does."
The Rockies were on the verge of another meager offensive showing Saturday before scoring three runs in the ninth. They had plated three runs in losing the first four contests of a six-game trip, and are averaging 1.5 runs while batting .177 in losing 10 of 11 on the road.
Lyles owns a 2.90 ERA in his last seven road outings but a lack of run support has left him with a 1-1 record.
The right-hander, who has one win in his last 11 starts, allowed a run and three hits in six innings in Monday's 3-2 loss to the New York Mets, but did not receive a decision. Although it was the first time he permitted less than two runs since April 30, Lyles wasn't particularly happy with the performance.
"Just physically I don't think I was there where I usually am, but we can't complain with a quality start," he said.
