KEY GAME INFORMATION
SAN DIEGO: SAN DIEGO (AP) - It's almost as if last season didn't end for the San Diego Padres.
The Padres go into 2014 trailing the Los Angeles Dodgers and with one of their starting pitchers already having arm trouble.
There had been a general air of optimism surrounding the Padres, who are coming off seasons of 91, 86 and 86 losses. Their rotation has been bolstered, as well as their player payroll.
Then came word late in spring training that newcomer Josh Johnson, penciled in as the No. 3 starter, is expected to be out four to five weeks after straining his right forearm.
That still leaves a projected rotation of Andrew Cashner, Tyson Ross, Ian Kennedy and Eric Stults, with a number of pitchers to choose from to replace Johnson.
''I think we have the talent on the mound, through our 12 guys that are going to make our team, to pitch well,'' manager Bud Black said. ''There's a health component here like all teams. We've got keep our best players on the field.''
The Padres signed Johnson to an $8 million, one-year contact less than two months after he had bone spurs removed from his pitching elbow. He was 2-8 with a 6.20 ERA in 16 appearances last season with Toronto.
When Johnson returns, the Padres hope he and Ian Kennedy can return to their old form.
Kennedy was acquired from division rival Arizona at the trading deadline. He went 4-2 with a 4.24 ERA with San Diego after going 3-8 with a 5.23 ERA in 21 starts with the Diamondbacks. Johnson was an All-Star with the Marlins in 2009 and 2010, and led the NL with a 2.30 ERA in 2010.
The Padres will be tested right away. They open at home Sunday night against the defending NL West champion Dodgers and their $225 million payroll, led by ace Clayton Kershaw, himself a $215 million man. The Dodgers already sit atop the division after sweeping the Diamondbacks in a two-game series in Sydney.
ARIZONA: PHOENIX (AP) - The season had not even started when the Arizona Diamondbacks took a loss.
A day before boarding the plane for their season opener in Australia, the Diamondbacks learned scheduled opening-day starter Patrick Corbin had a partially torn ligament in his pitching elbow and might need season-ending surgery.
Arizona went 21-8 in the young left-hander's starts last season, more than a quarter of the victories for a team that went 81-81 for the second year in a row. The Los Angeles Dodgers celebrated their NL West title by splashing around in Arizona's Chase Field swimming pool.
Arizona retooled during the offseason by adding power (Mark Trumbo), a veteran starter (Bronson Arroyo) and a young closer (Addison Reed). Even with the loss of Corbin, the Diamondbacks feel they have the components to contend for at least a wild-card berth.
''They really want it,'' catcher Miguel Montero said. ''They're hungry for something, and that's a good feeling. I think last year we were a little bit more laid back. This year the guys are hungry, and that's a good thing.''
Trumbo noticed a positive attitude right from the start of spring training.
''That's the personality of the guys here and that plays really well for the course of a long season,'' he said. ''You've got to have guys that play the game right way, but play it with a little bit of a chip on their shoulder and bring it every day.''

*Padres-Diamondbacks Preview* =============================

By ALAN FERGUSON STATS Writer

San Diego (68-78) at Arizona (59-88), 4:10 p.m. EDT

While they've labored for much of the past month, the Arizona Diamondbacks have a winning record against San Diego during that span and have recorded their only two win streaks at the Padres' expense.

After ending their longest skid in four years, the Diamondbacks will try to produce another set of back-to-back victories versus their NL West rivals Sunday.

Arizona (60-88) had dropped 19 of 25 and seven in a row before a 10-4 victory Saturday. Mark Trumbo had three hits and drove in three runs as the Diamondbacks improved to 5-4 against San Diego (68-79) since Aug. 21 and 11-7 overall.

They scored a combined six runs in the first two innings Saturday after totaling 13 during their lengthy skid.

"We came out pretty aggressive. We put a lot of guys in motion," manager Kirk Gibson said. "It worked out for us very well."

Arizona will next try to secure its third win streak since Aug. 9, and Trevor Cahill (3-11, 5.23 ERA) will seek to end a personal three-game skid. The right-hander has a 9.69 ERA in his past three starts, including a 3-1 loss in San Diego on Sept. 1, but showed some improvement over his previous two outings in a 7-2 defeat to the Los Angeles Dodgers last Sunday.

Cahill pitched five scoreless innings before getting charged with three runs while failing to get out of the sixth. He yielded just two hits in his 5 2-3 innings, but issued four walks and has given out a combined 17 in 19 1-3 innings in his last four games.

"(I need to) just be more aggressive, throw strikes," Cahill told MLB's official website. "That's kind of been what I've been working on for a long time. ... If I get ahead, don't try to put him away with the nastiest pitch, just make a good pitch and not necessarily go for the strikeout."

Cahill lasted only four-plus innings in his lone start against San Diego this season while yielding three runs, five hits and a season-high six walks in his 93 pitches.

Odrisamer Despaigne (3-6, 3.55) failed to make it out of the fifth inning in his most recent outing Monday at the Dodgers and was charged with a career-high seven runs in a 9-4 defeat, his third in a row.

The rookie right-hander has a 5.27 ERA in his last five starts after registering a 2.72 ERA in his first nine major league games.

He's gone 1-1 with a 2.41 ERA in three matchups with Arizona and yielded one run over seven innings against the Diamondbacks on Sept. 2 but did not get a decision in a 2-1 win. He allowed four runs in five innings in his only start in Arizona, a 5-1 loss Aug. 22.

Despaigne is 0-5 with a 6.67 ERA in six road starts since a 6-0 win in San Francisco in his MLB debut June 23.
