| | | SAN FRANCISCO: SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - From every slot in a talented, experienced rotation to the back end of the bullpen and in between, to the starting fielders and the role players on the bench, it's hard to find a member of the San Francisco Giants pleased with his 2013 season.
A year after winning the World Series, the Giants finished 10 games under .500, third in the NL West and they missed the playoffs.
''We don't even have to have the conversation, a lot of the guys know it,'' right-hander Matt Cain said. ''We didn't pitch the way that we wanted to.''
As the Giants begin a new year, they will try to keep up with the big-spending Los Angeles Dodgers and regain the grip they had on the NL West when the club won World Series championships in 2010 and `12 - even if everybody expects the Dodgers to be the team to beat.
''You do try to reflect back and try to learn from what happened last year and how you can get better,'' manager Bruce Bochy said. ''You move forward, that's what we had to do. There are some things we'll talk about in the spring, mistakes that we made last year. Also, hopefully guys come in with an attitude, that they weren't happy with what happened the year before and want to get back on track.''
Buster Posey certainly doesn't want to spend too much time thinking about last season.
''That's probably how everybody feels. There's a bad taste in a lot of guys' mouths,'' Posey said. ''We want to come out and focus on winning ballgames.''
| | COLORADO: DENVER (AP) - Justin Morneau wears Larry Walker's old number and is stepping in for Todd Helton.
Just so it's clear, though: He doesn't expect to be the next Walker and certainly isn't trying to make Colorado Rockies fans forget all about Helton, the everyday first baseman in the Mile High City since 1997.
Morneau can only be himself, a slick fielder who's a four-time All-Star and former AL MVP.
That's not too bad, either.
Still, the Rockies wouldn't mind if Morneau channeled a little bit of those two Colorado icons to help them get back to the postseason. But that's a lot of cleats to fill, especially when it comes to Helton, the franchise's leader in virtually every offensive category.
Morneau's goals are more modest: Slide seamlessly into to this potent lineup, one that includes good friend and reigning NL batting champion Michael Cuddyer, along with Carlos Gonzalez and Troy Tulowitzki.
The 32-year-old Morneau knows the comparisons to Helton are inevitable. No. 17 spent 17 seasons in purple pinstripes, endearing himself to the community. The team will honor Helton on Aug. 17 when they retire his number (although Helton's first send-off will be hard to top, when the club gave him a horse in his last home game).
''From the outside looking in, it looks like I'm coming in to replace him,'' said Morneau, who wears No. 33 because of Walker, his boyhood idol. ''But that's not my thought process. My thought process is to just come in and be me and do what I can do.''
Cuddyer thinks Morneau will fit in just fine.
''If you think about the guy you're replacing, you're already not doing yourself a good service,'' said Cuddyer, who was teammates with Morneau in Minnesota. ''He respects (Helton), but he also understands he has to go out there and be himself.''

*Giants-Rockies Preview* ========================
By MATT BECKER STATS Editor
San Francisco (75-62) at Colorado (54-83), 8:40 p.m. EDT
San Francisco's Hunter Pence and Buster Posey are two of baseball's hottest hitters.
Neither had any success, however, last week against Colorado's Jordan Lyles.
The two look to solve Lyles this time around and help the Giants bounce back from a discouraging loss Tuesday night against the Rockies at Coors Field.
San Francisco (75-63) had a golden opportunity to make up extra ground in the NL West race on Monday. It defeated the Rockies 4-2 in a game resumed after being suspended on May 22 because of rain and then built a 7-2 lead after five innings in the day's regularly scheduled contest. Colorado (55-83) rallied to take a 9-7 lead into the ninth before the Giants scored twice to tie it.
Charlie Blackmon then drove in the winning run with a two-out single in the ninth to hand the Giants a 10-9 loss and snap their six-game winning streak.
"Hard-fought game, tough game," manager Bruce Bochy said.
Despite the loss, Pence and Posey remained locked in.
Pence, who delivered a tiebreaking double in the eighth inning of the suspended game, hit a three-run homer later in the scheduled contest. He is batting .393 with 14 RBIs during a 14-game hitting streak, and .451 with five homers and 12 RBIs while hitting safely in 14 in a row against the Rockies. The NL leader with 166 hits is also batting a major league-best .528 (19 for 36) with runners in scoring position since the All-Star break.
Posey has also been a threat with men in scoring position, hitting .419 (13 for 31) in such situations since the break. He had three hits and drove in a run Monday, and is batting .469 with five homers and 14 RBIs in his last 11 games.
Like Pence, he's also putting up gaudy numbers against Colorado, hitting .429 with four home runs and 11 RBIs in his last nine in the series.
While Pence and Posey have been routinely frustrating pitchers over the past few weeks, the duo went a combined 0 for 5 against Lyles (6-2, 4.08 ERA) on Thursday.
Although Lyles managed to shut down the two, the right-hander allowed three runs and four hits in six innings and was saddled with a 4-1 loss.
His biggest moment came at the plate, as his two-out double in the third inning snapped Yusmeiro Petit's major league record of 46 consecutive batters retired. Petit (4-3, 3.44 ERA), who'll be opposing Lyles again, set the record one batter earlier.
Petit, whose streak covered eight games with six coming in relief, made the start in place of the struggling Tim Lincecum. After yielding a run and four hits in six innings to get the win, Bochy has decided to stick with him.
The righty struck out nine and walked none, raising his totals to 48 strikeouts to just four walks over 37 1-3 innings in his last 16 outings.
Colorado broke out of its offensive funk Monday, pounding out 15 hits after averaging 1.5 runs while batting .144 in dropping five of its previous six.
Michael McKenry had three hits and scored twice after going 1 for his previous 17, while Josh Rutledge had three hits, two RBIs and three runs after going 1 for his prior 18.
"The hits were coming from a lot of guys you may not expect it from," said Blackmon, who was 0 for 5 before his walkoff hit. "It's really positive to see that kind of contribution from not the usual suspects."
The status of San Francisco's Michael Morse is uncertain after he experienced soreness on his left side in batting practice Monday.
