KEY GAME INFORMATION
NY METS: NEW YORK (AP) - Five straight losing seasons. That's what the New York Mets have produced since moving into Citi Field.
David Wright, for one, is tired of it.
''We need to start going out there showing results,'' the star third baseman said. ''The last couple years we've kind of been hampered by some contracts and payroll issues. It seems like that's behind us. At the same time, we've got those prospects knocking at the door. I think we're in a better place now than we have been the past few years and quite frankly, I think we have a better team.''
Translation: No more waiting for next year. No more selling the future. No more excuses.
It's time to take a step forward - and that means winning.
General manager Sandy Alderson seems to think so, too. After he signed free agents Curtis Granderson, Bartolo Colon and Chris Young this offseason, a report emerged that Alderson told staffers he thinks the Mets can win 90 games (with a payroll under $90 million).
Even hard-core fans found that overly optimistic, especially with ace Matt Harvey expected to miss the entire season following Tommy John surgery. New York posted its second consecutive 74-88 record last year - and that was with Harvey on the mound most of the way.
But there is reason for hope, particularly in Triple-A. Touted young pitchers Noah Syndergaard and Rafael Montero could soon join a promising rotation that includes Colon, Zack Wheeler, Dillon Gee and Jonathon Niese.
''He's got all the traits of the good ones,'' manager Terry Collins said about Syndergaard. ''He's on track to be special.''
The offense could be better with the addition of Granderson, who got a $60 million, four-year deal after an injury-plagued season for the Yankees across town. His left-handed power bat should provide some much-needed protection for Wright.
The multitalented Young, on a one-year contract following a down season in Oakland, appears highly motivated to regain his All-Star form.
''It's been interesting to watch the whole team,'' Granderson said early in spring training. ''There's power here. Chris Young has been amazing.''
The lineup remains flawed and prone to strikeouts, though the roster has improved. Perhaps not enough to push Washington and Atlanta in the NL East just yet, but the Mets expect to take significant strides this season as they anticipate Harvey's return in 2015.
''When I re-signed here, I knew it wasn't an overnight fix. I think I like that part of the challenge of it,'' Wright said. ''I want to be part of the reason why we get this thing turned around and headed in the right direction and ultimately start winning again. I think we have that ability.''
MIAMI: MIAMI (AP) - The owner of the World Series champion Boston Red Sox is apparently unimpressed by the Miami Marlins' attempts to improve their feeble offense.
''They should apologize for their regular season lineup,'' John Henry tweeted during spring training.
In 2013 the Marlins were truly sorry. They finished last in the majors in batting average, slugging percentage, on-base percentage, runs and home runs, and scored even less than their woeful 1993 expansion team. They also lost 100 games, two more than in their first season.
Henry was being catty after the Red Sox drew criticism for the minor league lineup they fielded for a spring game against Miami. But he might be right - it's unclear whether an offseason shakeup of the lineup will mean more runs for the Marlins than last year.
''We were anemic offensively,'' new general manager Dan Jennings said. ''Just bad. It's unacceptable.''

*Mets-Marlins Preview* ======================

New York (63-73) at Miami (66-68), 1:10 p.m. EDT

The Miami Marlins are coming home after being punchless at the plate in the last five games of a dismal road trip.

It's advantageous that Henderson Alvarez will be on the mound for them back in Miami but definitely not good news that Zack Wheeler and the New York Mets will be the opponents.

Wheeler has been utterly dominant against the Marlins this season and the Mets have won five straight in this series entering Monday's opener of a three-game set.

Miami (66-69) capped a 3-6 trip with Sunday's 1-0 loss to Atlanta. The Marlins totaled nine runs and batted .214 with 52 strikeouts in losing four of their last five.

"It wasn't the way we drew up the road trip, but it's over," manager Mike Redmond told MLB's official website.

Alvarez (10-6, 2.75 ERA) owns baseball's best home ERA at 1.46 as he matches up with Wheeler for the third time. He is 0-1 with a 6.55 ERA in those two contests but has pitched 15 1-3 scoreless innings in winning his other two 2014 starts against the Mets.

Turning it around at the plate for the Marlins won't be easy against Wheeler (9-9, 3.44), who is 2-0 with a 0.65 ERA in four starts against them this year. The right-hander has struck out 31 over 27 2-3 innings in those games while limiting Miami to a .154 average with no homers.

Casey McGehee is 4 for 9 against Wheeler in 2014 while Giancarlo Stanton, Adeiny Hechavarria, Marcell Ozuna and Garrett Jones have combined to go 5 for 44.

Wheeler looks to get back on the winning track after yielding three runs and four hits in seven innings in Wednesday's 3-2 loss to the Braves. He had been 6-0 with a 2.12 ERA in his previous 10 outings.

"I felt like I was in control with most of my pitches," Wheeler said. "I thought I had pretty good stuff to keep the team in it."

Alvarez also had a win streak snapped in his last outing when he surrendered five runs over 6 1-3 innings in Wednesday's 6-1 defeat to the Los Angeles Angels. He posted a 2.25 ERA in winning his previous four starts.

The right-hander has had trouble this year against David Wright, who is 7 for 13 against him. Curtis Granderson is 1 for 13 against Alvarez in 2014 and turned in baseball's worst batting average (.147) and slugging percentage (.183) in August.

The Mets (64-73) have turned to younger players as the season winds down and avoided falling into last place in the NL East with Sunday's 6-5 victory over Philadelphia. Anthony Recker hit a three-run homer in a rare start and Kirk Nieuwenhuis added two hits in his first start since Aug. 8.

"That's how you win games, period," manager Terry Collins said. "It just makes a huge difference and it takes a lot of heat off the guys who every day get worn down. Once in a while fresh blood in the lineup can lift you up."

Stanton and New York's Lucas Duda are tied for the NL lead with 12 homers since the All-Star break.
