KEY GAME INFORMATION
MILWAUKEE: MILWAUKEE (AP) - Two pitches into his spring training return, the Brewers' most important player tried to prove his point.
Home run, Ryan Braun.
Now let's see how he fares when the games count.
Bolstered by the return of Braun from a 65-game doping suspension and the signing of free-agent starter Matt Garza, Milwaukee enters the 2014 season hoping it has the pieces to contend again in the competitive NL Central.
Braun has vowed to return to his 2011 MVP form.
''I think the expectation is to have an opportunity to compete to get back to the playoffs. That's our goal, I think it's realistic,'' Braun said during spring training in Phoenix.
Staying healthy would help, too. Besides Braun's suspension, injuries sapped much of the Brewers' power last year with projected 3-4-5 hitters Braun, Aramis Ramirez and Corey Hart each missing various lengths of time. Hart never played because of a knee injury.
Hart is gone, but Braun and Ramirez are back and bolstered by new team cornerstones who emerged last season in Carlos Gomez, Jean Segura and Jonathan Lucroy.
SAN DIEGO: SAN DIEGO (AP) - It's almost as if last season didn't end for the San Diego Padres.
The Padres go into 2014 trailing the Los Angeles Dodgers and with one of their starting pitchers already having arm trouble.
There had been a general air of optimism surrounding the Padres, who are coming off seasons of 91, 86 and 86 losses. Their rotation has been bolstered, as well as their player payroll.
Then came word late in spring training that newcomer Josh Johnson, penciled in as the No. 3 starter, is expected to be out four to five weeks after straining his right forearm.
That still leaves a projected rotation of Andrew Cashner, Tyson Ross, Ian Kennedy and Eric Stults, with a number of pitchers to choose from to replace Johnson.
''I think we have the talent on the mound, through our 12 guys that are going to make our team, to pitch well,'' manager Bud Black said. ''There's a health component here like all teams. We've got keep our best players on the field.''
The Padres signed Johnson to an $8 million, one-year contact less than two months after he had bone spurs removed from his pitching elbow. He was 2-8 with a 6.20 ERA in 16 appearances last season with Toronto.
When Johnson returns, the Padres hope he and Ian Kennedy can return to their old form.
Kennedy was acquired from division rival Arizona at the trading deadline. He went 4-2 with a 4.24 ERA with San Diego after going 3-8 with a 5.23 ERA in 21 starts with the Diamondbacks. Johnson was an All-Star with the Marlins in 2009 and 2010, and led the NL with a 2.30 ERA in 2010.
The Padres will be tested right away. They open at home Sunday night against the defending NL West champion Dodgers and their $225 million payroll, led by ace Clayton Kershaw, himself a $215 million man. The Dodgers already sit atop the division after sweeping the Diamondbacks in a two-game series in Sydney.

*Brewers-Padres Preview* ========================

By JORDAN GARRETSON STATS Writer

Milwaukee (73-59) at San Diego (61-70), 9:10 p.m. EDT

The Milwaukee Brewers were outpitched by the San Diego Padres in the second game of this series, but they should like their chances in Wednesday night's finale considering Yovani Gallardo's road success and Odrisamer Despaigne's recent slide.

Milwaukee (73-59) missed out on a chance to win six straight away from home for the first time since starting 6-0 on the road, suffering a 4-1 defeat Tuesday. Jimmy Nelson gave up two earned runs over five innings but was outdone by Tyson Ross, who limited Milwaukee to one run and four hits in 6 1-3.

The Brewers still maintained a 1 1/2-game cushion over St. Louis in the NL Central following the Cardinals' 5-2 defeat in Pittsburgh.

Gallardo is 5-0 with a 1.65 ERA in his last seven road starts, winning each of the last three. He's also been good at Petco Park, going 3-1 with a 3.16 ERA in four outings.

Gallardo (8-7, 3.38) allowed six runs - three earned - and eight hits over five innings of an 8-3 loss to the Pirates on Friday, falling to 0-3 with a 5.67 ERA in his last five starts at home.

Milwaukee committed two errors behind the right-hander, though he didn't excuse his lack of effectiveness.

"No matter what the situation is, I still have to be out there making pitches," he told MLB's official website. "...I just have to keep the ball down in the zone no matter what happens behind me and keep doing that throughout the game."

Gallardo limited the Padres to one run over seven innings in the Brewers' 2-1, 12-inning home loss April 22.

San Diego (61-70) will counter with Despaigne, who was 2-1 with a 1.31 ERA in his first five career starts but has since gone 1-4 with a 5.81 ERA in six outings. The right-hander lost 5-1 at Arizona on Friday, giving up four runs in five innings.

"The way I pitched, if I feel like that 10 times I would win eight out of 10," Despaigne said.

Like Gallardo, Despaigne (3-5, 3.44) hopes Petco Park will continue to be kind to him, as he owns a 2.45 ERA in five games there.

Rookie hurlers have also fared relatively well against Milwaukee, going 7-5 with a 3.67 ERA in 14 starts.

Will Venable is 7 for 18 with a home run and two doubles when facing Gallardo, but he's 1 for 11 over his last seven games.

Ryan Braun returned to Milwaukee's lineup Tuesday after exiting in the seventh inning Monday when he took a knee to his left quadriceps in a first-base collision. He went 0 for 4 with two strikeouts to snap a six-game hitting streak.
