| | | TEXAS: ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - The Texas Rangers are already hurting significantly even before the start of a new season.
In a span of three days the week before opening day, the Rangers scratched ace Yu Darvish from that scheduled start because of neck stiffness, and found out they would be without second baseman Jurickson Profar and catcher Geovany Soto for 10 to 12 weeks each because of injuries.
Sure, the Rangers know there are going to be injuries during the season.
''We just didn't expect it to be all at this point,'' general manager Jon Daniels said.
The Rangers, after missing the playoffs last year for the first time in four seasons, already knew they would be missing lefty starters Matt Harrison and Derek Holland to start the season.
At least Harrison, who had a mild setback early in camp after his back issues last season, should return within the first month. Holland could miss at least half the season because of left knee surgery after being tripped by his dog on stairs in his home in January.
The only three position players remaining from the Rangers' last World Series in 2011 also missed games this spring with lesser nagging issues. But shortstop Elvis Andrus, third baseman Adrian Beltre and designated hitter Mitch Moreland should all be in the lineup Monday against Philadelphia.
After missing the playoffs for the first time in four years and scoring their fewest runs (730) in a full season since 1992, the Rangers' two most significant offseason moves were to improve their offense.
They got durable slugger Prince Fielder from Detroit by trading Ian Kinsler, a move that cleared the way Profar to be an everyday player. Free agent outfielder Shin-Soo Choo was signed to a seven-year deal - the same time left on Fielder's contract - to take over the leadoff spot.
Only Mike Trout (564) and two-time AL MVP Miguel Cabrera (562) reached base more the past two season than Choo (556) and Fielder (542), who has the longest active streak in the majors playing in 505 consecutive regular-season games - and 809 of 810 the past five years.
''I just want Prince to be Prince,'' said manager Ron Washington, starting his eighth season in Texas. ''I just want him to do what he does, and let everyone else does what they do, and everything will work out.''
| | SEATTLE: SEATTLE (AP) - Robinson Cano was just the start. The Seattle Mariners didn't stop with one major splash in trying to catch up with the best in the AL West.
Even so, there remain many questions about whether Seattle's additions as a whole can improve a team coming off a 71-win season.
The moves made by Seattle general manager Jack Zduriencik were in hopes of improving the Mariners and solidifying his own future after a shaky offseason that started with Eric Wedge's decision not to return as manager.
Lloyd McClendon is getting his second shot as a major league manager nine years after he was last leading a club in Pittsburgh. Along with Cano, Seattle signed outfielder Corey Hart, closer Fernando Rodney and traded for designated hitter Logan Morrison.
Despite those moves, there remain concerns about the depth of Seattle's rotation beyond ace Felix Hernandez and whether players the Mariners have been waiting for to finally pop can establish themselves as reliable, everyday starters.
Yet the Mariners believe they will be competitive in one of baseball's toughest divisions.
''We're ready to win. That's what it's all about,'' Hernandez said. ''We're ready to win ballgames in Seattle. We're ready to be in the playoffs, we're ready to do that.''

| | ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ PA SPORTSTICKER AL PREVIEW (TEXAS-SEATTLE) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
*Rangers-Mariners Preview* ==========================
By ALAN FERGUSON STATS Writer
Texas (51-79) at Seattle (71-59), 10:10 p.m. EDT
The return of Robinson Cano appeared to give the Seattle Mariners a better chance to stay hot and add to their wild-card lead.
Instead, they again lost to the lowly Texas Rangers.
Seattle will try to bounce back and remain in playoff position when these AL West rivals continue a three-game series Tuesday night.
Cano left in the third inning of Sunday's 8-6 win against Boston, Seattle's 14th in 18 games, with dizziness from an illness. The second baseman, the AL's fourth-leading hitter at .326, was back in the lineup Monday but couldn't lead the Mariners (71-59) to a ninth win in 10 home contests.
Cano had one of Seattle's four singles in a 2-0 loss, its eighth in 13 games this season against Texas (51-79), and committed an error in the seventh inning that led to the second run.
The Mariners, now one-half game in front of Detroit for the second wild card, have losing records against only two other AL teams, Baltimore (2-5) and Minnesota (2-5).
"They got pitching and we (were) able to take advantage of some things that we created, and we just got to continue to do that," Rangers manager Ron Washington said.
Seattle's James Paxton (3-1, 2.20 ERA) will try to bounce back from his first defeat in 10 major league starts. He gave up four runs in a career-low four innings in Wednesday's 4-3 loss to Philadelphia, but three were unearned because of a throwing error the left-hander committed in his final inning.
"Obviously that can't happen, you've got to be able to make the throw to first," said Paxton, who will be facing Texas for the first time. "Something that I'll definitely work on between starts."
The Rangers, owners of MLB's worst record, will seek their first three-game win streak since June 11-14 and a season high-tying third in a row on the road.
Nick Martinez (3-9, 5.13) is looking to earn his third victory in four starts and win consecutive outings for the first time in his career. The rookie right-hander gave up two runs in six innings and struck out a career-high seven Wednesday in a 5-4 victory in Miami.
Martinez was 1-8 with a 7.01 ERA in his previous 12 starts.
He gave up two runs in six innings in his only start against Seattle on June 15, a 5-1 defeat. Kyle Seager went 3 for 3 against him and is batting .390 with nine homers in his last 34 games against Texas.
Rangers outfielder Leonys Martin, batting .432 in his last 12 games, is hitting .355 in his last 10 against Seattle.
