KEY GAME INFORMATION
COLORADO: DENVER (AP) - Justin Morneau wears Larry Walker's old number and is stepping in for Todd Helton.
Just so it's clear, though: He doesn't expect to be the next Walker and certainly isn't trying to make Colorado Rockies fans forget all about Helton, the everyday first baseman in the Mile High City since 1997.
Morneau can only be himself, a slick fielder who's a four-time All-Star and former AL MVP.
That's not too bad, either.
Still, the Rockies wouldn't mind if Morneau channeled a little bit of those two Colorado icons to help them get back to the postseason. But that's a lot of cleats to fill, especially when it comes to Helton, the franchise's leader in virtually every offensive category.
Morneau's goals are more modest: Slide seamlessly into to this potent lineup, one that includes good friend and reigning NL batting champion Michael Cuddyer, along with Carlos Gonzalez and Troy Tulowitzki.
The 32-year-old Morneau knows the comparisons to Helton are inevitable. No. 17 spent 17 seasons in purple pinstripes, endearing himself to the community. The team will honor Helton on Aug. 17 when they retire his number (although Helton's first send-off will be hard to top, when the club gave him a horse in his last home game).
''From the outside looking in, it looks like I'm coming in to replace him,'' said Morneau, who wears No. 33 because of Walker, his boyhood idol. ''But that's not my thought process. My thought process is to just come in and be me and do what I can do.''
Cuddyer thinks Morneau will fit in just fine.
''If you think about the guy you're replacing, you're already not doing yourself a good service,'' said Cuddyer, who was teammates with Morneau in Minnesota. ''He respects (Helton), but he also understands he has to go out there and be himself.''
SAN FRANCISCO: SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - From every slot in a talented, experienced rotation to the back end of the bullpen and in between, to the starting fielders and the role players on the bench, it's hard to find a member of the San Francisco Giants pleased with his 2013 season.
A year after winning the World Series, the Giants finished 10 games under .500, third in the NL West and they missed the playoffs.
''We don't even have to have the conversation, a lot of the guys know it,'' right-hander Matt Cain said. ''We didn't pitch the way that we wanted to.''
As the Giants begin a new year, they will try to keep up with the big-spending Los Angeles Dodgers and regain the grip they had on the NL West when the club won World Series championships in 2010 and `12 - even if everybody expects the Dodgers to be the team to beat.
''You do try to reflect back and try to learn from what happened last year and how you can get better,'' manager Bruce Bochy said. ''You move forward, that's what we had to do. There are some things we'll talk about in the spring, mistakes that we made last year. Also, hopefully guys come in with an attitude, that they weren't happy with what happened the year before and want to get back on track.''
Buster Posey certainly doesn't want to spend too much time thinking about last season.
''That's probably how everybody feels. There's a bad taste in a lot of guys' mouths,'' Posey said. ''We want to come out and focus on winning ballgames.''

*Rockies-Giants Preview* ========================

By JORDAN GARRETSON STATS Writer

Colorado (53-77) at San Francisco (68-62), 10:15 p.m. EDT

Runs came at a premium in the series opener between the San Francisco Giants and Colorado Rockies. But considering Madison Bumgarner and Jorge De La Rosa's track records in this NL West rivalry, there may be a lot more offense in Tuesday night's matchup of left-handers.

The Giants (68-62) have followed three straight wins with three consecutive defeats, dropping Monday night's matchup 3-2. They had a 9-6 advantage in hits but also tied a season high with four errors, two by shortstop Brandon Crawford.

Colorado (53-77) also had six hits in seven innings against Bumgarner (14-9, 3.17 ERA) on June 15 in San Francisco before rallying for an 8-7 win. He is 2-3 with a 4.91 ERA in his last seven starts versus Colorado, and Josh Rutledge is 8 for 17 against him.

Bumgarner owns a 5.86 ERA over his last six home starts, though he pitched better in his most recent one. He held Philadelphia to one run and four hits while striking out nine and walking none over seven innings of a 5-3 loss in 10 on Aug. 15.

He has struck out 36 over 31 innings in his last four starts overall, including 12 - one shy of a career high - in Thursday's 5-3 win over the Cubs. He ended that seven-inning outing with a strikeout to strand two runners in scoring position.

"He's as mentally tough as you get," manager Bruce Bochy said. "He's got a knack for making pitches when he has to."

De La Rosa (13-8, 4.21) has struggled away from Coors Field, going 1-3 with a 6.09 ERA in his last six starts, but he's coming off consecutive home wins over Cincinnati and Kansas City behind a 3.00 ERA.

The Giants have given De La Rosa problems, as he's 2-4 with a 6.14 ERA in his last 10 matchups. He left after three innings in San Francisco on June 13 due to tightness in his lower back.

The Rockies have won seven of 10 after a 6-21 stretch. Monday's victory marked the first time in team history they've won four straight at San Francisco after sweeping three games in June, which was also the last time Colorado won consecutive road games.

"It's been a house of horrors for us for a long time," manager Walt Weiss said. "It's great to see us winning some games here, some tight games, some games that in the past we used to lose, those one-run games like tonight."

Tuesday's matchup could see a relief appearance from Tim Lincecum, who has been bumped from the rotation to San Francisco's bullpen.

Lincecum is 1-3 with 9.49 ERA in his last six starts. He has a 1.00 ERA in eight career relief appearances, including the playoffs.

"He's fine," Bochy said. "He's going to work on some things. It's no problem with him."

Hunter Pence was 2 for 3 on Monday and has gone 18 for 37 with four homers and three doubles in his last 10 games against Colorado. He's 6 for 21 with two home runs and two doubles when facing De La Rosa.
